Sep 2007, Mr G Forrest

I was here on business for three days but I only stayed at his hotel for 1 night as it's a 2* and it's obvious why. Location is pretty much miles away from the city centre and I walked for over an hour from the city centre to the hotel - ALL UPHILL - not recommended with... more

My boyfriend and I had a lovely stay here. The staff we really friendly and made our stay really enjoyable-they helped us out a lot with advice about where to go and what to do. The location was also great. We wanted somewhere close to the shops and bars but that was... more

Really, really awful
This hotel was dreadful. I've stayed in 2 star hotels in Cuba that are nicer than this supposed 3 star. The carpets are stained and worn, the bed cover was stained, the room had a very strong smell of air freshner - to hide the musty smell the rest of the hotel had. The bathroom had a disgusting floor that was clearly water damaged and a bath tub with no shower hose - just a hot tap and a cold tap...I had to bring a cup in with me to wash. The beds were very uncomfortable and while the breakfast was edible it did not make up for the rest of the hotel. Spend a few more pounds and get a decent place.
Resembled a university hall of residence
The hotel is in a good location within a short walk of Bristol and on a bus route too. Our room was very basic. The furniture was mis-matched, decoration was shabby, and the bed was very uncomfortable. The shower room was clean but very out-dated and the suite needed replacing (towel rail falling off, shower cracked and shower curtain mouldy). The room was noisy because of the flimsy door. Breakfast was ok, but not great. All-in-all, this was over-priced and disappointing. A similar standard to university halls of residence (but cleaner!).
rather shabby!
This hotel was very rough around the edges. Stained carpets, lights that didn't work and the tiniest bathroom I have every seen in my life! It was just a door with a toilet and shower crammed behind it. The shower head was very low down, it came to about my shoulder hight. There was a little TV that must have been 15 years old but it was on a stand so close to the ground that you couldn't see it from the beds. The bedding consisted of a dodgy brown blanket and sheets that had seen better days. There was a good selection of teas and coffee, but 3 pieces of very ripe fruit that you wouldn't have been able to eat fo a couple of days at least. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was ok but this hotel is in serious need of an update and I think we paid way too much for it. The hotel is in a beautiful area of Bristol but I really would recommend staying elsewhere if you can!
Resembles a shabby B&B
Oh my God - it's simply ghastly, do not stay there, unless you enjoy NOT sleeping. The matress has springs in it which dig into you every time you move. the curtains aren't as long as the windows - how does that happen? There were hairs in the basin plug - disgusting! The shower was just a tiny trickle, not even enough to wash properly, the door would have given in with the tiniest push... Need I go on??? Basically I wish I'd stayed in a B&B for a fifth of the price with the possibility of getting some sleep.
Awfull -More like an outdated youth hostel
This is the worst '3 star hotel' that we've ever stayed in. We booked two rooms and both were grubby, dated decor, old carpet stains, paintwork chipped. The best thing we can say about the toilet and showers were they are claustrophobic . If we hadn't arrived late evening, we would not have stayed.
As good as much more expensive places
Okay so the bathroom tiles had a couple of cracks but the room was clean, tidy, spacious and nicely decorated. Staff were all friendly, breakfast good. My room was on the same floor as the breakfast room and car park (although probably still not suitable for wheelchairs - one or two low steps and probably not enough space to manouevre. Fresh good quality fruit and cafetiere plus real coffee were nice touches which so often much more expensive hotels manage to just get wrong. For my money 'the Washington' offers way more than other hotels in it's price range and definitely more than the big chains (travelodge, travel inn etc) which are just so homogeneous.
Cheap and cheerful!
Having read a couple of the reviews I was a bit apprehensive about my booking at this hotel to say the least. Having stayed however, I must say that my experience was nowhere near as bad and that I actually enjoyed the hotel. Yes the hotel could definately do with a bit of re-decoration in some areas - the wardrobe was chipped and the armchair was definately getting on! The wall on entering the room also could have done with a lick of paint where people have obviously scuffed it with their luggage. The room in general though was comfortable and the staff wonderful. The evening receptionist really went out of her way to find me travel information I had mentioned, and I really do appreciate that kind of service. Considering this is a budget hotel it offers good value for money overall and a good full english in the morning was a pleasant start to the day. The breakfast staff are just as helpful. If you can overlook a few decoration issues, this hotel is a good bet for a cheap stay considering its central location.
Good value hotel with great staff
Stayed at the Washington with my girlfriend for a couple of nights recently and would definately recommend. The hotel and its staff are very friendly and welcoming, and the room (although it could have done with a bit of new furniture!) was very clean and comfy. Fresh fruit and biscuits too which was great!! Good brekkie in morning too. Would stay again
Pass on this hotel.
I stayed here with my family in early December 2004 and was very unhappy. The hotel was shabby, the parking difficult, the decor terrible, the paint chipped, the beds uncomfortable, the room drafty, the carpet stained, and the blankets unclean. Each night, our room had one or two flies in it (and this was December). The hotel is 4 or 5 floors with no elevator, and breakfast is two floors away from any rooms, guaranteeing every guest a climb of some degree. The beds were not even true mattresses, but some lumpy upholstered daybed thing pushed together with a sheet over it. Breakfast was fairly good, although service was overwhelmed by a large crowd our first morning. The staff tried to be friendly, but lacked much knowledge about the area and were not always fully fluent in English. My husband and I stayed in 8 hotels in our travels through 6 European countries, and this hotel was easily the worst. Stay somewhere else.
Don't go there!
I'll start with the good points, all two of them, the staff are lovely, and breakfast is nice. That's it. The place is shabby, there are cracks in the walls, the beds are so lumpy as to make sleep impossible, the pillows could have done with replacing 4 years ago, the shower was either scalding or freezing, the heating got turned off in the middle of the night and the lock on the door would have given way with a very small amount of persuasion. Overall it was cold and depressing. Go somewhere else.
