Berkeley Square Hotel Reviews

10 / 10
May 2006, Miss S Weir

It is not possible for me to sing the praises of this hotel high enough. After receiving a warm welcome from the immaculately presented front of house staff, I was pleased to find a spacious, well designed and maintained room with a beautiful view across the square. The... more

Nice hotel - but some problems
I stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks whilst on a residential course in Bristol. The room was nice and clean, though very small, and the complimentary sherry was certainly a nice touch (hic!). It's also in a superb location. So why only 3 out of 5? Well, the hotel owns(?) a nightclub which is in the basement of the building. As you will have seen from some of the other Tripadvisor member reviews, the bass coming from the music in this club is immense. I was very lucky in that my room was on the top floor, but I could still hear the club until 2am. Goodness only knows how bad it must be in one of the basement rooms. So if this sort of thing doesn't bother you, then it's a nice old fashioned sort of place to stay (if a bit pokey). The staff were fine, and the breakfasts were fine - I enjoyed my stay. However, on the last night of my visit to Bristol I stayed down the road at the Marriot (for work-related reasons) and I must say that was a more modern, up-to-date sort of place (though considerably more expensive). If you are a light sleeper - avoid.
Character and location make this a good choice
Staying at this hotel was generally a very pleasant experience. The location is excellent, being in close proximity to the University and central Bristol with a quiet, green space within a short walk across a very picturesque Georgian square. The hotel is tastefully stylish in the same vein as the St Martin's Lane in London. The rooms are less 'designer' but pleasantly decorated and comfortable. The noise from fans(?) at the rear of the hotel was a bit much but I think allowances have to be made for it being an old building. Cleanliness was not top-notch but acceptable. My colleague forgot her mobile phone and used the phone in her room which was very expensive - make sure you take yours with you! We ate dinner in the restaurant which was of a good standard as was breakfast the next day. Service was polite, helpful and friendly. I would recommend this hotel if you prefer something with a bit more character than the average city centre hotel.
weird place
This hotel is a bit unsual and you love it or you hate it. I hated it. I stayed there for 3 nights in june while visiting someone at university of Bristol. Here is the story. The room was very very small and there was no air conditioner (I was told later that the hotel has no room with A/C). So be careful in the summer not to stay on the top floor as it may get hot inside. Internet connection and telephone were way expensive and there was almost nothing interesting to watch on TV. I agree with the other reviewers that the room was nicely decorated but that just don't count when you don't have the comfort to enjoy it. The only reason I can recommend this hotel is its location (very close to the university of Bristol and to many pubs and restaurants).
Quirky
Modern interior - very relaxed and friendly (trendy) staff. Good value and tasy food. Very small room with single bed but was modern and contained everything you needed. Great toletries, bowl of fruit, decanter of sherry, cafitere of coffee, widescreen tv and dvd player! The breakfast was great and different - all made to order.
Good weekday stay
Monday night - so no clubbing disturbance. Situated in quiet square just off main "Triangle" area in trendy Clifton. Good for shops and restaurants. On street meter parking or £5 in hotel carpark. Clean, well appointed (small) room on 3rd floor. Fresh fruit. Sherry decanter. Hi-Fi. DVD. Great shower. Comfortable double bed. Breakfast included, overheard French visitor remarking on how good the coffee was. Staff young but attentive. Some strange decorative choices in lounge area (stuffed peacock; gazell head with pink eye make-up).
The noise from the nightclub all night long
We stayed at this hotel for one night in one of the rooms in the basement next to the thumping music of the nightclub next door. When we complained about the noise from the nightclub, the hotel staff were fully versed in excuses and offered us earplugs which we used until after 2.00am when the music finally stopped. We suspect the hotel does own the nightclub as there is a door leading from the hotel basement into the club next door. The decor of the room was modern and pleasant although the mini-bar contained a plastic carrier bag with an old ham sandwich, rotten apple and half a bottle of water! Apparently the breakfast was good, but I was too tired to get up and eat anything having been kept awake all night by the nightclub, and woken up again by the fire alarm in the morning and the constant movement of the hotel lift. The daytime staff seemed pleasant. The nightime staff are unhelpful and seem fed up about all the complaints they receive.
What a Gem of a find!
What a find! I had not expected to find such high standards in terms of location, staff and modern rooms. The little touches were what got me. Complementary fruit bowl & decanter of sherry, flat screen TV, DVD player & hi-fi system. The bed was heaven, with great big fluffy pilows. Would not consider staying anywhere else in Bristol especially considering the horrible bigger hotel groups. Good bye Thistle, hello Berkeley Square!
Good, but with some niggles..
Stayed here for one night. The hotel was above average in terms of appearance, and the staff were nice (if a little disorganised). Got a bargain single room rate via bestwesten, and when assigned my room found it was exactly as it said on the time - a single. However, it was well designed and comfortable, with TV, CD/Hi-fi, en-suite, soft bed, seating, fresh fruit, tea/coffee facilities and a small decanter of sherry! Meal service that evening in the restuaraunt was a little slow, but extremely friendly. Breakfast the next morning (included in the rate) was hot and filling. The only downsides were the pounding music from a bar just down the road. The music was so loud, I could hear the bass vibrating in my room. Granted, there was nothing the hotel could do about this - but really they should advise people staying in rooms at the front of the hotel that this is a potential issue. Check-out was also a little disorganised. All in all, a good little hotel - but if staying, ask at reception for a room at the rear if the bar down the road is open until 1 a.m.!
Brilliant!
We had an excellent time - would highly recommend this hotel for the following reasons: 1)Staff were extremely friendly and helpful - they went out of their way to provide us with the extra travel information that we required. 2)The room was large, spacious and very well deocrated with lots of little touches that I have not seen in a hotel before - complimentary fresh fruit, bottled water, fresh tea and cafetiere coffee. Also DVD player, stereo system, widescreen TV and so on, needless to say my boyfriend and I were very impressed. 3) The breakfast in the morning was freshly cooked to order and the brakfast staff were lovely 4) Location. location. Location - this hotel is ideal for town, the university and clifton! This place was lovely - we had an excellent weekend and will definitely stay there again!
