Tired, small, noisy rooms - but good location
We have just returned from this hotel. The overall feel is somewhat youth hostelly! Tiny, narrow corridors, extremely small rooms and bathrooms, huge amounts of street noise, but without the windows open we it was stuffy and hot. We had even booked an "Executive room" - so heaven knows what the other rooms were like. We had also called the hotel in advance to check that they had an iron we could use. There is 1 iron available for hte whole hotel - and it didn't work very well, so we went to our party looking somewhat creased!! We... more
What a [---]-tip!
Dear oh dear - where do I start? I've had the dubious pleasure of stopping at this dump twice - there won't be a third time! My first visit was with a small group whereby we got a large triple room - however one of the beds was tiny & placed underneath a broken window - and when I say broken I mean with some of the glass missing! My second visit was with my wife. As she's no fan of mouldy bathrooms, lumpy mattresses & peeling woodchip wallpaper we didn't exactly enjoy our stay. The downstairs bar, which double as the... more
Worst ever night in a hotal
Where does one start? Check in? Not a good omen when you are asked at a hotel to pay in advance on checking in? Then to be told you are 3 floors up and no lift. Once past reception, all pretence of quality disappears as one ascends the creaking dirty narrow stairways. Do not accept any room on the top floor on a warm night. My room had a window just about large enough to poke your head out to get some air. With a low ceiling and all the heat from the hotel with nowhere else to go, it was like spending a night in a dirty sauna. No... more
Do not
I would really like to enjoy this hotel. It is in a nice area, staff are always with the smile. But -the bathroom was mouldy -heigh of the shower was at 1.75m -the matress had seen better years. -the covers had seen better years. -the corridor was smelly of kitchen oil. For the money they were asking i think it was too much.
Keep going back but not sure why
I have stayed at the Clifton four times in all now, primarily because I know it is in handy walking distance to where I need to be (the university) and plenty of shops and bars. On three of the four occasions I have stayed I have had problems with my room - the shower not working, no heating in January etc - but the staff have always been excellent and have done their utmost to resolve any problems. Also, Racks restaurant in the basement of the hotel is excellent and serves one of the best breakfasts I've had, and generally the rooms are... more
"Sad & Tired"
Unlike its friendly youthful staff the Clifton Hotel should have been retired or sent for a makeover years ago. My room had water stained walls and ceiling along with peeling paintwork and the smell of damp. The receptionist immediately gave me another room which was a slight improvement on the first although the sash window rattled all night in the wind, and the bathroom was small and very dated. Whilst the suite was clean the walls and paintwork were not. It is little wonder you are asked to pay in advance at check-in. Racks... more
Time for a refurb
Well on the Tuesday night that I stayed there was a private party in the basement restaurant, this went on till 2am ensuring that now matter how comfy the bed is - sleep deprivation is assured. At 6am, the person in the room upstairs had a shower as a lot of the water from his shower poured through the electrics of my smoke detector and onto my room floor - when you hear the sound of leaking water you wake up instantly. I enjoyed my 4 hours sleep at this hotel, I would have preferred 8, but they saw to it that I wouldn't get this.
Excellent staff
Convenient location not fat from the centre and excellent and helpful staff
Past it's sell by date or what?
OUR PARTY of 4 adults and two children stayed here for the weekend in February 2004 to celebrate a 50th party. It looked and sounded good in descriptions but sadly the rooms were very tatty and small for what must once have been a fine old Bristol series of large terraced houses. The corridors are clostrophobically narrow! The bed covers were stained as were the carpets (threadbear) in the rooms and the public area. The fittings were all very tired and walls scuff marked and the bathrooms very poor and all this for £79 per night B&B. The... more
