Just back from a very relaxing week.

Oct 2011, MrsGee

As the title says we're just back from a weeks holiday at Hunters Quay. We stayed in a 2 bed lodge with ensuite for the double room. The lodge itself was immaculate. We later found out it was a refurbished one & my goodness they certainly did a good job. Lovely new carpets & furniture throughout. Shower could do with more pressure but it was fine for its purpose.
We reported a broken bedside lamp & base of one wine glass & they were changed within the hour. All reception & bar staff were very helpful & friendly.
The pool was lovely. As it was a quieter week we pretty much had the pool to ourselves - although there wasn't much in the pool our two daughters, aged 5 & 2, were more than happy just splashing around for an hour or so. However older children may be bored by the lack of things to do. The use of the steam room, sauna & jacuzzi was of benefit to us as we could take a break from the pool & kids & have 10 mins of peace!
The Hunters Bar & Grill provided lovely food with a very efficient service. We ate there a few times & had coffee breaks there with very nice cakes after a swim.
The mini market had essential items for your first day there but we found the Morrisons in Dunoon was more useful & was open better hours.

We are planning on coming back next year as we were so impressed with the site & the accommodation & are considering purchasing a caravan or lodge there ourselves so we can go back whenever we like. It is the ideal base for exploration of the surrounding areas.

A costly disappointment

On arrival ,We checked in at the reception to be told that there was a fuel surcharge of £35. We explained that we were not notified about the added fuel surcharge when we booked the holiday and there were no details of the surcharge on our conformation letters. When shown the booking conformation, the young lady gave a sideways smirk and told us because we booked through Hoeseasons we had paid a lot more than we would have if we had booked direct (always nice to find out that we paid almost £100 too much and we still had to pay more). The assistant went to see her supervisor to see if the charge could be dropped. She returned and said we would not have to pay the £35, but we would still need to leave £40 deposit for the remote control and site passes.Like a fool I left my cash card details and got settled in. The caravan was very nice, well presented and as spacious as a static caravan could be realy.
That night we ate at the club house, the food was good, the service was friendly .I had a shock at the cost of the drinks though, a pint of Fosters and a small glass of cheap white wine came to £7.50. I thought that because I'm English that the price had suddenly been inflated, but no, that was the real price.
My wife and I took our children into the "activity" area only to be scalped for more cash. It looked like an old sports hall with a lot of expensive ,out of date and broken video games and one penny push game. There was a soft play area with an entry charge of almost £8 for our 3 children. They even charged for the table tennis (ping pong)at just short of £3.
We spent most of the holiday exploring the local area (Loch Fyne Oyster bar is a must, a bit pricey but worth it for the quality and service). We did look for other things to entertain the kids with in the evening, but we ended up in the ex-sports hall.
When we were checking out, we were stung with the £35 fuel charge. We had to pay as they had my cash card details. We explained that we were told it had been dropped, but the battle axe at the desk said she had not been notified. What a shock. This just put a dark cloud over our holiday and left me feeling angry and bitter about our whole experience.
This link takes you to youtube, to a clip of chewing the fat, this sums up the feeling of my experiance of Hunters Quay.

Hunters Quay Holiday Park

On the whole very happy with the facilities offered at Hunters Quay holiday park. We had a small problem with the boiler and the handy man was out to fix it in 5minutes. Caravan was nice and clean too. Only disappointment was some of the entertainment provided. Considering the large outside climbing frame was out of use due to maintenance it would have been a nice gesture to perhaps extend the hours of the bouncy castle which was only up for a very short period of time. Many of the games in the hall are broken too. The disco in the bar was a letdown. No dance floor for children to let off some steam. Can they really be expected to dance on the carpet with people walking from the bar with trays full of drinks? And £10 for 2 beers and 2 soft drinks is, in my opinion, very expensive. Both spa pools also shut.
The location is great for getting out and about.

  • Advice: I will go back one more time and would then assess.

Just returned from Hunters Quay and had a lovely short break. We stayed in a 2 bed Jura caravan which was immaculate cannot fault the caravan at all...spacious,warm and clean. The leisure centre was ok...pool clean, plenty changing rooms is not overcrowded have a strict overcrowding policy depending on lifeguards. The "entertainment" is not up to much really but we dont go for that anyway. Large games hall with kids ball pool play areas one for under 4 and over 4's unsupervised play area though and no-one bothers to pay for it either u can hire court for badminton etc. £5 and £2.50 for racquets.
An arcade with the usual fruit machines,2p penny fall air hockey...was fine we didn't spend a fortune. overall we found this park fine for us but would not recommend for teenagers as there really is not much to do. They also have a key card policy for entry in and out of park and leisure centre. Our party consisted of 2 adults 2 kids (9 & 3). Dunoon is a 2 min drive with lovely wee high street and plenty places to eat out. Only ate once at the leisure park which was not really up to much to be honest is was ok restaurant reminded me of a dinner school/social club. The leisure centre itself is very dark and dreech which is a shame really as the landscape round about it is stunning but no windows to look out. If you fancy a short break in clean comfortable accomodation then i would recommend if you like a busy entertainment nightlife and stuff for kids through the day they have nothing. Also some of the staff should maybe get jobs they like as they looked sooo miserable......
hope this helps.

We have just returned from Hunters Quay where we stayed in a lodge and have the following comments:
1. There were no towels so we had to buy whilst there(there was an option to hire). No advice earlier to bring your own.
2.There was no remote control for the TV - the reception said it had been lost previously. The knew it was lost before our arrival. The site was far from full so there must have been spare as you collected the remote controls at reception on arrival.
3. The shower was very poor i.e no pressure.
4. The vacuum cleaner was only used once as the smell nearly made us sick. friends who had been previously had the same issue(2007).
5. The was no corkscrew for opening wine bottles - my kitchen was better furnished when I was a student.
6. There were holes in the sofa cushions.
7. The kitchen table was so dirty on arrival that when we wiped it with a yellow dishtowel the towel turned black.
8. The lights are all long life lights which is fine but the time it took to properly light the room was a joke. Not funny having to turn the light on in the bathroom 5 mins before you 'go'.
9. The leisure complex bar and games area was stinking(dirty & smelly).
10. The pool is not as bright and beautiful as the brochure.
On a positive note we as a family enjoyed our holiday but not because of the site but because of the local surroundings and adventures outwith the site.
We have stayed with Hoseasons in the past at Darwin & Griffin Forest and have never found a reason to complain - unfortunately it is unlikely we will use them again.

Hunters Quay Holiday Village in...

Hunters Quay Holiday Village in Dunoon is clean, child friendly and lots of fun.
There is great views of the Holy Loch and Dunoon itself is nice and friendly. There are great restaurants to go to it is also very peaceful if that is what you want.
The caravans are very high standard and very well equipped, there is also log cabins if you wish and these are to a very high standard as well.
My children loved their holidays in Dunoon and have got great memories of their time there.

Although the Lodge we were in was set in the most beautiful and well kept grounds we have seen in a holiday village.
The leisure and entertainment centre left a lot to be desired. The pool was freezing and the changing areas were smelly and dirty. Coincidently my five year old went down with a virus.
The outdoor play area was strewn with empty drink cups and a lack of supervision made it quite a "rough" place to be although the management can't be blamed for that.
The entertainment was also poor as there was nothing specifically for kids and it didn't start until 9.30pm, when my two are getting ready for bed.
Over all apart from the grounds, the rest of place looked ready for a much needed makeover.

We opted to stay in the static caravans and found these to be extremely clean and spacious. We were a family of 3 adults and 2 children.
The accommodation was one double room and 2 twin rooms. The living area was very comfortable with TV and DVD player. The kitchen and eating area had a full size cooker/oven and fridge freezer. The shower was separate from the toilet which was very useful. The caravan had full central heating as well as a fire in the living area.
The site has very well maintained grounds. he leisure facilities are well looked after and were never too busy. Although the Scottish schools had gone back when we visited.
Entertainment was put on at the weekend .We went one evening and everyone seemed to be enjoying the group.
The facilities for kids were good although the arcade games could "run away with the money"
The onsite shop was basic but a 5 minute ride in the car took you to Dunoon and the late opening supermarket.
We did not eat in the "lounge" it did not look too appealing however we cannot comment on what we did not try.
We all had a lovely time and really appreciated the surrounding area. We were very lucky to be able to see it at its best in the sunshine!

What can I say. We had a great time, stayed in one of the lodges. It was clean, tidy, and very cosy. We had a very good welcome from staff also.
We had up and down weather, but made the best of it. I came with my son and best friend. We wanted to chill out and have a quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here, we got just that, it was so peaceful, that, along with the most stunning scenery I had ever seen, will definitely come back again one day.

I visited Hunters Quay Holiday Park in Dunoon for a week in July this year with three kids, although this is a lovely site it is really let down by its evening entertainment.
The entertainment did not start until between 9 & 9.30 each evening ,lasted approx 1.5 hrs and was boring.
We expected the same quality of entertainment as other caravan parks we have been to in July. Bingo(early evening) then entertainment for the younger kids (magic tricks/dance shows ect) then something for the adults & older kids.
We were very disappointed with Hunters Quay and would not recommend it to families with children.
We think it is more for older people well over pension age & people who don`t want entertainment at night!!
