We stopped at the Miami - Sunny Isles Beach - Trump Sonesta for two nights as part of a seven night trip to the area. We had travelled to Miami to attend the NASCAR race weekend at Homestead.
As we were going to camp for three nights alongside other race fans we had decided on a little bit of luxury before hand. The five star Trump Sonesta seemed an ideal choice, with its private stretch of beach, tropical pool complex and Spa facilities.
The pool complex is the saving grace of this resort as it is really beautiful, but some of the other features although satisfactory were lacking in both style and value for money.
Our room had a view of the pool complex, which when lit up at night was enchanting. Aside from the view the room itself although spacious was very average. The bathroom brought a touch of luxury, with its impressive open plan shower. The down side of this however was that every time we used the shower the bathroom floor became very wet and slippery. Definitely an accident waiting to happen.
Our breakfast experience was lacking in style. Our room package included breakfast and upon checking in we were presented with a voucher to use each morning. When presenting this voucher at the buffet style breakfast bar, the waiter would point out that we were only entitled to certain items. Despite not reaching the monetary total entitled to by the voucher we were not allowed to order both coffee and orange juice, we were allowed a cold bagel, but not one of the warm ones. Just not the service I would expect from a luxury hotel.
By far my worst experience was in Aquanox Spa. I had a facial wax and a manicure. Following the wax I had a rash that lasted my entire trip. I have averagely sensitive skin and have used wax products without a reaction. As I was not asked if I had sensitive skin I assumed that they were using hypoallergenic products as a matter of course. This was obviously not the case. We checked out of the hotel following this treatment and it was as we drove away that I noticed four of my nails were scuffed. They couldn’t have been dry when I had left the treatment room.
This hotel could be wonderful, it simply wasn’t. I am happy to pay a little bit more for luxury, but this hotel wasn’t worth spending that little bit more.
