The main Reception to the chalets is approx 500m or so away down a winding hill. The usual lift to take you from one to the other was broken and a man in a van was provided to take you each day until 20:30. If you were out for the evening in Mottaret and your return was later than 20:30 you could save approx 800-900m walking by going straight up the piste to the chalet. This is approx 200m but the gradient ensures that you will burn off all the evening’s calories and more. The lower drop off point with the white van man was also the stop for the free bus to Meribel Centre 4km away. These ran until midnight tout les jours.
Eating out is reasonably priced considering the location of the established French resort. A steak is approx 25 euros and a local dish “assiette de raclette” is 18 euros. This is boiled potatoes covered in melted cheese and a selection of cured meats. Drinking is slightly more expensive with a beer costing around 5-7 euros.
The rooms in the chalets are compact. There were 3 of us in our room and it felt crowded at times. There were an additional 2 beds in the room and I dread to think what it would be like if there had been more of us. Larger rooms are available with separate bedrooms.
On arrival you are required to give your credit/debit card details should anything be broken in the room. If you hire skis or a board locally you pay at the end of the week after an inspection shows all to be intact. Skis or a board costs 96 euros for 1 week hire.
Staying here over Christmas was a pleasant change to being in the UK. There was a reasonable amount of snow for the time of year, but as it was sill early in the season, conditions could have been better. There was very little off piste action and icy runs meant that I slipped and ended up with my arm in pot. That said, it was a very pleasant week and I would go back.
