The first thing you need to know is...
4 / 10
Oct 2007, Miss S Cope

The first thing you need to know is not to expect a 4 star hotel as advertised. At best this is a low 3 star which is not what we paid for. The food was terrible and even though we were all inclusive, we ended up eating out most nights for 2 weeks. This was an extra expense we could have done without but we couldn’t starve! Although, the all inclusive is worth it for the drinks which you can have all day until midnight.
The reception and pool areas are great, but you get up to the rooms and it is a disappointment. The rooms look tired and dated; there are no handles on the drawers! The walls are paper thin, I could hear our neighbours every move and because of this an afternoon nap was out of the question. On at least one occasion I had to go round and ask for the TV to be turned down, I don’t think it was particularly loud but I could hear everything through the walls!
The entertainment is very poor and we did not see half the things advertised, which meant again, we were going out and spending more money.
The beach across the road is not a sunbather’s beach; you have to get the bus for 20 mins to Coral Bay for one of those. Although, the bus stop is right outside the hotel and you can go anywhere for 40 pence! The brochure and Olympic say the hotel is a few minutes away from the harbour, try an hours walk and 20 mins in a taxi. Taxis all cost 4-5 Cypriot pound wherever you go.
I was expecting to have a relaxing 2 weeks in the sun, the only thing relaxing was the weather which was fantastic, and we did not see one cloud the 2 weeks we were there. The hotel generally was not very relaxing and I couldn’t wait to get home for a rest, which was a shame considering how much it cost it us!

Sep 2007, Mr M Droushiotis

We had a good holiday at the Avlida Hotel. We were very impressed with the hotel in general and with the area that it is in Paphos.
The beach near the hotel is ok, it is not twenty meters and I have not seen anywhere suggesting this. It is around about 200 to 250 meters. In any case there are better beaches about 10 minutes drive or 15-20 on the bus. In general the location is good, near everything of interest.
The hotel services were up to standard. The food was nice, the cleaning was excellent, the staff were fast and polite always and all of them. In terms of tangibles, the hotel was nicely put together, not on a very large plot, so no walks in the garden, but the swimming pool is magnificent.
Our rooms were large enough and all appliances expected were there such as air-conditioning, satellite TV, hair-dryer, mini bar etc, all in good working order. Try the pool view which is I think a safe option as side sea view can be very side and little sea view.
A weeks holiday was very pleasantly spent.

Aug 2007, Mrs D Hook

We have just spent a week at the Avlida, we were all-inclusive. The hotel staff were brilliant with the exception of a few. The entertainment was good most evenings and it was all in English. The pool was warm and big enough for everyone, our accommodation was clean and tidy and the maid service was excellent. Alot of the food was Cypriot food and there was not alot of choice for children.
The nearest beach is about 200 metres away but is not safe for swimming as it has huge waves and a very strong undercurrent but there are many lovely beaches just a bus ride away. The hotel is situated well with the harbour about 1 mile away, buses and taxis are always available. The Tomb of the Kings is very open and needs to be visited early in the day, take plenty of water with you as there is not a shop.
We had a great holiday and the staff and guests at the Avlida helped make it a memorable time but I don’t think it is a 4 star hotel because of the food, and there are alot of restrictions for drink choices and food times and for all-inclusive package. The all-inclusive package has a different menu for snacks which is only about 6 things, 9.30pm is the latest time food is available, so you have to eat early.

Aug 2007, Mr O Peters

We were somewhat disappointed by this hotel and the staff, our room was not cleaned two days out of seven, there was a big argument with the staff when we asked them to do it. We changed room to get away from the horrible singer at the front of the hotel. The food was very basic and repetitive and the air conditioning in the bar area didn't work, pretty poor hotel in my opinion and we will not be returning.

Aug 2007, Mr P Wain

Please do not believe the 10/10 ratings below, I did and regret it. The Hotel is at most 3 star and not a very good one at that. Our room was not cleaned 2 days out of 7. We moved room to get away from the horrible singer at the front of the hotel and ended up looking at the bins but at least this was quiet. The food was very poor. One evening we just looked at the buffet and left. The owner/manager bosses all of the staff around in full view of the guests, as you can imagine the staff are pretty miserable. There are plenty of better hotels in the same price bracket. The only good thing is that the hotel is close to two very good restaurants.

Jul 2007, Miss M Monger

We are not usually a family that complain about holidays. However, this is an honest opinion and we would like to express it so that people are under no illusions of this hotel and its location.
The rooms are larger and ok but no where near a 4 star standard.
The drinks are very expensive and you have a long wait for them so order 2 at a time.
The entertainment is very bad. If you have children who are fussy eaters like mine you will be hard pushed to find something for them to eat as the restaurant has no children's food/menu available.
The pool area is also poor and nothing like the brochure picture at all, and the 20 metres from the beach is misleading as the beach belongs to another hotel and is not safe for children as there is a drip to the sea. There are lots of sunbeds around the pool but only due to the fact that no one wants to be there.
It is a 10 minute bus ride to the beach (Coral Bay ) which is lovely. Also a good hour's walk to the Harbour.
Paphos is a beautiful place and we have visited many times, but try the Loius Phaethon or Ledra Beach!!!!

Jul 2007, Miss T Meehan

I returned on the 8th July, while walking through into the reception you can see why the 4 star has been credited. I’m afraid it’s a bit of a let down in the sleeping areas, this is more of a low 2-3 star. Most of the staff are pleasant, some a tad rude. The food is ok if you like eating the same thing day in and day out. Be very careful charging things to the room as we didn't but they still tried to charge us anyway! Keep the receipts you'll need these as proof.
Overall enjoyed Paphos and you’re not in the room all that much, and the pool is really nice. If you want entertainment though use somewhere else as it's not up to much!

I and my partner stayed at the Avlida...
6 / 10
Jul 2007, Miss R C Chapman

I and my partner stayed at the Avlida Hotel for a week on a HB basis. Firstly the positives...
1. The hotel itself was really nice and had recently been fully refurbished. The bar and lounge areas were especially lovely.
2. The pool was nice and you didn't feel too cramped, no matter what time you went down there you could also guarantee yourself a sunbed. The waterfalls were also a nice touch.
3. The Tombs of the Kings is literally 2 minutes away and for £1CYP is well worth the visit.
4. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel entrance. The buses are cheap and on time and you can get almost anywhere along the main strip for as little as 80 cents. You must visit the Harbour and the Water Park.
And, the negatives:
1. The rooms weren't that great. The furnishings seemed very old and dated and the bathroom although clean appeared somewhat dingy. Our air con was also very temperamental and broke twice during our stay - although I must give the maintenance staff credit, as they were able to fix it on both occasions.
2. The prices in the hotel were a little steep. I know you expect to pay a little more for that coca-cola by the pool but compared to the great deals in the local bars, the prices were very high.
3. The top pool wasn't working at all during our stay - something to do with a leak?
4. The food wasn't that great either. Breakfast was fine but in the evenings I felt that there was limited choice of meals. I'm not a fussy eater at all and most nights I couldn't find anything I liked. I and my partner therefore had to eat out most nights.
The food however is cheap enough in the bars and restaurants but this added to the expense of the holiday and was a bit of an inconvenience.
I would recommend the hotel but would definitely not pay the full catalogue price for it.
Whilst in Paphos you must visit Fat Mama's Grill Bar - not only do they serve excellent food but put on shows whilst you’re eating. A definite must for families!

Me, my Husband and 3 and 1 year old...
6 / 10
Jun 2007, Mrs C Hyde

Me, my Husband and 3 and 1 year old children stayed at Avlida half board for one week.
I'll start with the negative comments and finish with the positives. As when I read the long comments I didn't get as far as finding the bad points. I think you need to know that first.
The negative side of our stay at this hotel was the service of the staff. We were really stressed by the system of ordering drinks. For example during the day at the poolside when we wanted a drink I would walk to the bar and order.
I would not get any response or eye contact for at least 2-3 minutes and then would finally get told to sit down (with a "see you later" and ushered away with hand actions).
This was so that the waiter/waitress could get told to bring the drinks to my sunbed. I felt this was unnecessary whilst I was stood right at the bar.
This was particularly upsetting for my children who had selected an ice cream from the freezer for it then to be taken away from them to be put on a tray and carried over by a member of staff.
If the money was taken by the bar person before I returned to my sunbed then I found it very difficult to get my change. On one occasion I'd paid with £10cyp and asked the waitress for the change she asked me to go to see the barperson with her as she seemed too scared to sort the problem out herself. He already said he'd given me my change but he hadn't I did get it back though.
There was no 'chit chat' from any of the staff in fact most of them could not understand my language and seemed rather nervous of their 'section head'/ manager.
The evening entertainment was lousy. I stayed for a quiz one evening which was appalling. I felt as if the entertainers thought the guests were not very bright as each song that was played (it was more like name that tune than a quiz) had the title in what was played quite clearly and was played for at least a minute.
This was just a well as I had to keep track of my change each time my drinks were ordered. I only stayed for two. My last point about the drinks were that for a standard coke the English price was nearly three pounds.
General comments were that there were only two or three children staying at the hotel this is good or bad depending on what views you have. Accommodation was definitely not a four star in my opinion instead more of a two - three. However, it suited us.
Rooms were cleaned daily and they were spacious.
Positive comments - our view for an inland view was great as we could still see the sea. Poolside was fantastic. Very clean and tidy, not over packed - just right in June. Water was clean and not overdosed with chemicals.
Half board food was good with lots of options. I thought the lunch looked like the night before left over’s but I only ate it once or twice at an extra cost (due to half board option). If you're staying here definitely go all inclusive due to the cost of the drinks just allow a break here or there for lunch or dinner occasionally.
Last thing - We hired a car and I adored Cyprus. Hotel location wasn't fantastic as the beach is red flag and you need a bus to travel. Although a few bars and restaurants are just a few mins away and bus rides are cheap.

Jun 2007, Mr T Peck

Top marks for the Avlida, being definitely the large family type, we booked with and early booking discount at the Avlida as some of us had been before. Fantastic pool scene, with something for everybody as far as the in-house entertainment goes.
Food was great, varied and plentiful, the service was quite fast provided by the pleasant staff. The lobby was a lot classier than the rooms, but they were spacious, clean and tastefully decorated none the less. Location wise it is good too, lots of bars and restaurants around the hotel and it’s not far from coral bay.
Very decently priced. Give it a go.

We have just returned from the Avlida...
8 / 10
Jun 2007, Miss K Boyd

We have just returned from the Avlida a few days ago... Paphos and the hotel were lovely, although it’s definitely not a 10 minute walk to the harbour!! 10 minute car journey more like, but then we hired a jeep so there was not a problem.
The dining room, pool area, bars and hall are all really nice, however the bedrooms could do with a little updating, but then you don't normally spend too much time in your room anyway, or we didn't. The beds are not the most comfortable I have ever slept in and it was two single beds pushed together to make a double (but I have experienced this quite a number of times in other hotels).
All the staff were pretty friendly and the place was clean.
We thought the drinks were pretty expensive and the entertainment in the evening was terrible. Two Dutch people always singing/dancing etc, would have been nicer with a CD player in the corner (it would have been better - honest), and by speaking to other guests I think this was the general consensus.
But again, there are pubs on either side of the hotel, so you don't have to go far to have a nice relaxing drink.
The reason I have given this 8/10 is due to the price, you get what you pay for and we paid £300 total for 1 week - a bargain if you ask me!!!
Oh, breakfast was lovely too - choice of cereal, yoghurt, fruit, toast, buns, eggs, tomato, sausages, bacon, potatoes, beans, tea, coffee, you will definitely not go hungry.

Returned from the Avlida a few days...
10 / 10
May 2007, Mr N Young

Returned from the Avlida a few days ago after a fortnights holiday, and we all have to say that we enjoyed our time there.
A good place for families, its big enough not to feel cramped, yet nicely put together so you can’t really loose contact with the kids.
The location is superb as well, we never went to an archaeological site whilst on holidays as we are generally not into that, but we thought we should see the Tombs. The kids really liked it and it it’s good to get cultured a bit.
When we first got there, there was little entertainment and few people. We asked why this was and the receptionist (lovely girl) told us that the hotel had only opened a couple of weeks ago for the season, so we showed understanding.
The situation did improve as days went by and by the time we left it felt a lot more like a holiday hotel. Got a few nights of singing, some shows etc.
The hotel itself is nicely put together, marble and granite all over the lobby, ships and ancient Greece themes blend nicely with paintings and decorations etc.
They were tiling the restaurant whilst we were there, which took five days, so they served breakfast at the pool which was great, and dinner was served in a smaller section of the restaurant that was blocked off.
One could tell these were not the proper serving and seating areas for breakfast and dinner, but it was ok for 5 days, and there was no noise as the tillers stopped during meal times.
Dinner felt slightly cramped. The restaurant was done two days before we left and it is absolutely luxurious, way superior to the carpet they had previously. We only dined in it twice and they were great.
The food was always great, hot, lots of variety and plentiful. Bread was so fresh and soft always, so were the desserts. Service was always with a smile and as helpful as possible.
Now, the bad: Although the restaurant finishing was excellent and praise is due to the tilers, I don’t think it should have happened whilst we were there. It didn’t disturb us much but it just makes you wonder why when the hotel was closed for a few months over winter.
Most annoying to the point of being traumatic, were three girls in their early twenties, also on holiday. All they did was pester people to complain about things when there was nothing wrong with them. They constantly moaned and even threatened the manager who was extremely patient with them. They even had the cheek to complain about the noise when they came back entirely intoxicated almost every night and woke up half the residents. The manager told me that he was going to check them out in the end.
All in all, the Avlida was an excellent choice and quite cheap too.
