Not as bad as I was expecting
7 / 10
Nov 2008, emma snow

Having read the previous reviews I was not really looking foward to my stay( it had been booked by our parents as a family holiday).
Our room was large even with a sofa bed for our son. Plenty of storage and a good sized bathroom. The room and bathroom although dated in decor was clean and tidy as were the sheets ect.and the towels. The air con worked fine. The maid did a good job every day with clean towels, replacement toiletries, clean glasses and empty bins.
Our TV was small and did not work well, but who goes to Cyprus to watch TV?
The food was not too bad, there was plenty of choice and it was a different selection every day, some of it was very nice indeed, howerver if you like English fare or wanted traditional Cypriut food then it did not delliver, it was not 4* food, would be better for B&B ot 1/2 board basis.
We found the drinks and bar service to be fine.
The so called entertainment was dreadfull, however our 7 yr old son loved the Greek dancing!
All in all not as bad as expected 4* in Cyprus remember is never the same as 4*in the UK.Our stay was enjoyable with no real complaints.

As you enter the hotel you believe it...
3 / 10
Oct 2008, Mr P Bayliss

As you enter the hotel you believe it is a 4 star hotel as is the bar area but once you leave the lobby and get into the 2 tiny lifts things change.
The wallpaper is all damaged and in a bad state of repair.
The rooms are well worn and need a good update.
The balconies are tiny
When we pulled the sheets back on one of the beds the sheets had blood stains on them.
The food was edible but lacked the 4 star flair.
When you wanted a drink you had to wait 15-30 mins for a waiter to bring them as they only ever had 1 person despensing the drinks.
The drinks were watered down so much that you could never get merry how ever much you drunk.
The hotel charge 4 star prices but it was only worth a 2 star plus.
This was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at.
The sunbeds were worn and stained.
The manager was always shouting at the staff.
The entertainment was rubbish and not worth listening to

4 / 10
Oct 2008, Mr A P Tiplady

Sadly, previous cooments are a direct reflection of experiencing a stay at this tired and dated hotel which is definately not 4* but more like a worn out 3*. Whilst the polished marble floors and ornate lobby bar along with the soft sofa seating indicate a great looking hotel on the ground floor, the rooms let this down badly. 17 of us arrived on the first night and all demanded to be moved due to the lack of cleanliness and tired and dirty state of each room, the decor of which are all stuck in the mid 80's. They've "re-decorated" the rooms overlooking the front and pool-side which is where we were eventually moved to but the rest need a drastic make-over. They're also a bit cramped and although the mattresses were clean the beds and the bedding had seen better days including the room furniture. Both towels and bedding had irremovable stains on them. The bathroom is just as dated and the tiling appeared to have been grouted by Stevie Wonder. Again, this was another area of the room which needed a good scrub/modernising. The staff are mostly friendly but are unenthusiastic - probably due to the temper of the large chain smoking manager and the fact that they only earn around 800 Euro's a month. The dining area is great but the food is very bland and is repetative. The best consistant food we experienced was the breakfast if you can make it before 9.30am ! The pool area is nice on the eye and clean enough but the barmy poolside snack bar is ran with absolute chaos and the food is poor. They have a loopy system throughout for ordering food and drink. You order and they take your room number but with no proof of your room number asked for at all it was easy for people to end up with a bill at the end of the week even though we were AI and clearly wore the wristband. Along with this you're only supposed to order single shots of spirits - they just wont serve doubles....and the spirits are local and very weak. Imports have to be paid for on your room as they won't accept cash!! Other bars and eateries line the main road between the hotel and the harbour and almost all offer good food and inexpensive imported beers and sprits. "Father's" is the bar right next door to the hotel and along with "Fat Mama's" down the road offered the best ever tasting food and drink until 3.00am. "Joannes" bar just up the road was the same which is where everyone from the hotel Venus beach goes to for a change - we stayed there last year and it's a much better hotel - we just wanted to try (and failed!) other accommodation. A disappointing experience in all and almost everyone staying had a sorry tale to tell. We won't be returning - ever - and our advice is to stay elsewhere.

Oct 2008, Ms G Gemma

Myself and my boyfriend stayed at the Avlida, as we had been to Paphos before and although we were staying in the main resort, we actually spent a lot more time in that area. Our options were between three and five start so we went for a middle level, only 4 hotels on that stretch but more than 6-7 hotel apartments.

It was an absolutely lovely holiday. The beach was not the best, but we already knew that so we went to coral bay. No point in trying any other beach, believe me. The hotels surrounding area is excellent because its full of low-key pubs and restaurants, Just on the left of the hotel is a really good restaurant, olibettis or something similar, a definite try if you go out there.
The staff were amazing, well behaved, well mannered and terribly helpful. We found out a lot of stuff from them that our rep didn’t know or did not say. As far as the hotel itself is concerned, we have nothing bad to say. Food was good, room was clean, pool was lovely. Might even warrant a return visit

Oct 2008, Mrs A Jones

First the good points:
The first impression given was positive, as the lounge is top class.
It was a bit of a hassle checking in as it was a bank holiday weekend for the
cypriots and the reception was packed. We soon went off to our room which
we found to be up to standard except the TV which was a bit on the small size.
The food served was hot and plentiful always, never had a bad meal.
Some of the salads were not to our taste personally, but there was a lot to choose
from as happens in buffets. Be sure to go to breakfast and leave before 9:00
if there is a large number of cypriot kids as their parents
will let them run around and disturb other people.
All the waiting staff were excellent, and the pool area was very nice.
The hotels location is quite good, a few days on the beach opposite are enough,
there are better beaches after 15 minutes and on our last 2 days we were recomended
to go to Latchi, which had beautiful beaches and is less spoilt by buildings,
but there were no hotels there just small hotel apartments.
Anyway, the location was very good for the price we paid.
The bad points:
The elevator broke down twice during our 15 day stay. Both times fixed within the day
but surely twice should not happen. sometimes service would be a bit slow.

Would like to give a zero - but not allowed.
This is a dump. Rated so called 4 star. ha. It is nearer a 1 star.
Dirty, shabby and very run down hotel. The food bland and like slop.
Staff unhappy and over worked. The manager rude and un-approachable.
A total waste of money. You have been warned. DO NOT GO HERE.
Would not send a dog there.

Sep 2008, Mrs C Gray

After returning few days ago feel the hotel is not as bad as people make out however the rooms are in need of decorating. The food was good, although bit repetative, drinks well expensive but came quite promptly when ordered. The manager well another story, he was so rude to the staff, none of them were happy. The entertainment was pretty poor, the dj was quite happy to leave a CD playing, he could not be bothered most of time. The pool area was lovely and clean was also cleaned few times we were there. Phaphos harbour and coral bay well worth a visit. We would return to cyprus again, but not at this hotel.

I can only repeat the previous few...
3 / 10
Sep 2008, Mr NA Corker

I can only repeat the previous few comments - dont be decieved by the marble clad lobby. Our room was very tired looking with poor air conditioning and a very small balcony which faced onto the back of the nearby strip club. The mattresses were very hard and uncomfortable and the towels supplied every three days were often frayed and stained.
The pool area looked good in the brochures but in real life turned out to be neglected and dirty. The 'lazy river' in particular had algae floating in it most days and during our two weeks there we didnt see a single member of staff attempt to properly clean or treat the water. Come prepared with earplugs also as the repetitive music will drive you nuts!! I should also note that to get to the pool area from reception you need to pass through an alleyway which contains the back entrances to the kitchens - and trust me, after a three or four days the smell of stale chip fat starts to lose its appeal!!
Suprisingly, we enjoyed the food served up in the evenings and found the quality and variety to be good. Breakfast was very basic and lacked variety but we just about managed.
The staff (some of eatern European origin) appeared to be very over-worked and demotivated, although the manager didnt help matters with his aggressive and bullying approach. The night time 'entertainment' was non existant so we went into Paphos most nights (thank goodness for the regular bus service!).
I'm not a fussy holiday maker but would advise anyone looking at the area for a holiday to avoid the Avlida at all costs but at the same time remember that Paphos and Cyprus as a whole is a wonderful holiday destination.

I am surprised that the hotel is...
1 / 10
Sep 2008, Mr K Mayo

I am surprised that the hotel is described as refurbished. It was rated 4star (cyprus standard), it may have pool and amenities to rate 4 star but it was not. service very poor/surly. Our breakfast was nasty, water dilute juices, tinned fruit, cheap bread, cheap flakes, cheap bad food. Rooms very large, a/c under powered, room badly maintained and poorly cleaned, beds with 3" mattress (hard board below), worn sheets, worn towels. Suspect fire detection sensors, some hanging from wire, none showing led indicator. years of neglect. We felt for the all inclusives, they must really suffer. We left for the Athena Beach hotel (also 4 star) the difference was so large, a beautiful 4 star with services and food to write home about, well maintained, 4 star furniture and fittings, 4 star linen. The pools etc that made Avlida's look like.....well not like nice pools.
Avlida would be OK if rated at about 2 star (and really refurbished in full) and rates set to match, currently charges are way above service and amenities provided.

This was our second visit to Cyprus,...
4 / 10
Aug 2008, Mr KP Hesmondhalgh

This was our second visit to Cyprus, last one was in 1994! First off, the hotel is not a 4*. It might be advertised as such but forget it. If you work on basis of it being a 2* then you will not be disappointed. The hotel is impressive.......if you stay in reception! We had to swap rooms as our first room had vomit on the carpets and was filthy dirty. The room we were moved to was better, but not by much (it was vomit free though). This is a very basic hotel. The kids liked the pool area but the kids play area is a joke. Again, clean, it isn't. The food is basic and not much variation from day to day, but it is edible. As other reviewers state, most of the staff are good, but some of them are pig ignorant. We went in October and there was no entertainment on offer, nor was there a childrens menu or early sitting for children. Check with your tour operator to confirm that these facilities are available if they are important to you We were told that Coral Bay was worth a visit, so we went for a look. If you like your sand mixed with equal parts of fag ends, this is a beach for you. We ate out a couple of times (to get a break from the hotel menu) and can recommend Fat Mammas, just down the road, towards town. Just make sure that you are hungry because the meals are huge. Hired a car to see more of this side of Cyprus and some of the scenery is fantastic. If you want great beaches, go to the other side of Cyprus If you like roughing it, this is a hotel for you If you want 4* hotels, don't book here Overall, disappointing holiday. You can get better value for money elsewhere than Cyprus

Mmmm the Avlida Hotel! This was the...
1 / 10
Aug 2008, Mrs F M Apps

Mmmm the Avlida Hotel! This was the hotel we chose as a honeymoon destination for two weeks.
On first entering the hotel, it definitely had the WOW factor with its marble flooring and lovely reception area.
My husband had already emailed ahead to say we was a honeymoon couple and asked if they could do anything, I.e. upgrade or maybe flowers or champagne. They emailed back to say that we would have something. But there was nothing. He had to make a complaint, then someone came to our room with Champagne and fruit!
So, they upgraded us, but we couldn’t see how as we had already booked a double room. On walking into the room, it was apparent that this was not 4*. We couldn’t even class it really as 3* as we had stayed in better 2* accommodation. The room was very basic, en-suite bathroom, bath, shower, etc. Towels was not very white/big and very old. The shower curtain was ripped, stained and had mould on it. The floor was filthy, until my husband complained, then it was mopped.
The air con wasn’t even working properly, so first stop was reception to get maintenance to look at it. By the time it was working it sounded like a jack hammer going off all the time and was so bad that we had to ask for a fan.
Looking around the hotel it was apparent that all was not well. The cleanliness and the hygiene was not what you could call 4* at all. In fact it wasn’t very good at all.
Bed Linen was not changed frequently and infact when we did complain, we had sheets put on our bed that had blood stains on!
The food hall was nice but not airy enough. I could not open the window and there was as far as I could see only one fan blowing through a filter in the wall. It appeared that the air con had been turned down/off to encourage people to drink more.
The food was ok. Breakfast and Lunch being by far the best. If you want English food still then this is the place. For most of the chef’s are from England!
Dinner time was like feeding time at the Zoo. Some of the food was lovely, but we found the most popular dishes was stopped after a couple of days to make room for more less savoury dishes. Plenty of Chips and Burgers on though!
The main bar! What a joke, there are more chiefs than Indians and the beer and coke was flat. One guy we became friendly with made the bar manager pull 8 pints of larger out and not one of them had a bit of fizz in it. If you have to pay for this, it’s total waste of money and the drinks are not cheap.
The Pool area was nice, but again, not very hygienic. In our second week there, people was starting to come down with ear infections (including my husbanc) and tummy bugs, myself included. The Pool Side is the place where Lunch is served. Its all very well, but the floor gets very slippery and dangerous, especially when you have kids running in and out soaking wet!
There is an indoor pool, again filthy dirty, and a gym, which was pretty basic and sauna, steam room and alternative therapies offered at a price.
Entertainment, was by far the oddest thing going. It ranged from bingo (which is another story) to a nightly quiz, karaoke, some lady singing very old songs and playing a keyboard and a ‘Greek’ evening! Which wasn’t worth a pee in a pot! Very boring.
The BOSS MAN, to whom we called the Don, just walked around shouting at the staff all the time, to which was all working their socks off and never had a moments rest, although there was a couple of members of staff which were completely lazy. The staffs morale was very low. This was very apparent to everyone and on one occasion I saw two members of staff in tears. They was all very pleasant and very polite.
Bingo - stay clear. It isn’t all it is cracked up to be. Some friends from Belfast counted 66 tickets being sold at €5 each, this added up to €330 and yet the top prize was €70 - so where was the rest being pocketed to? And if you won you had to pull some kind of stunt, like jumping in the pool. Might be fun if you’re stunned!
The quiz was the same in the second week as it was in the first and the only prize was a cocktail, which came if you was all inclusive! So as you can see the management never gave much away. We paid for all inclusive 2 weeks stay, and was told that everything was all inclusive, but dont be fooled by this, because you have to pay for some drinks and even bottled water.
We heard so many people complaining, it was ridiculous.
On a positive note, we made some very good friends out there and the people were very friendly and our flying trip to Egypt made it worthwhile!
Caution is to be taken when people outside the hotel stop you with scratch cards and tell you that you have won £600 in holiday vouchers, DON’T GET SUCKED IN, they are for a trip to a resort way out, to a new timeshare village and you have to pay for your transport back, and that could cost you at least €30’s.
Asking if we would go back, definitely not. To Paphos, maybe, but definitely not this hotel! In both of our natures, we dont usually moan, but this time, we feel we had to say something.
