Our superior room at the silver sands was spacious with a very large bed, which contrary to some previous reviews was quite comfortable. The building did have a bit of a run down look to it, but the cleaning standards were very high. One irritation was that the en-suite... more

Cracking holiday
Just back from 2weeks at the Silver Sands holiday village a great location near to the beach plenty of restarurants around to walk out to. Rooms basic but clean pool area nice and clean. Beware of the chicken/beef SIZZELERS at "Infernos " they can be abit volatile, spitting hot sauce at you, but very tasty. There are all types of food available in loads of different restarurants chinese, italian, even fish n chips with mushy peas and calvery's. Half the fun is looking and deciding where to go and what to eat, be careful of "Mad Cat"/catto locco over priced and over rated. Alexander's just round the corner was excellent, with Mama Alexander advising us on what was the tastiest and best Goan dishes to eat. Trips are best booked local John's trips are always excellent. We also booked a Jungle Trip to Backwoods Camp,( not with John) but wasn't as good as previous ones. Once small and friendly but now pile 'em in and stack 'em high. PLEASE DON'T give money to beggars epspecially children. While they are begging on streets or beach and taking home money they won't be sent to school. Education is free and they should be in school. One "con" is the official looking form with a school/charity stamp, asking for donations stating that the child is deaf and dumb and asking for money usually 500 rupees. Ask yourself why a school would send children on the beach asking for money. Take some small gifts ballons ,soaps, toothbrushs, or carry asome banana, oranges, biscuit but please don't give money. (Only give pens to kids that go to school ) If we stopped giving money they might just end up in school. Sorry about that, but it has to be said, please bare in mind that the people of India are not starving and there are provisions made for them. It might not be upto our standards, but, this is India. The Silver Sands is a great place to stay, we were in a basic bungalow, usually reserved for Olympic holidays. Jewel in the Crown are in the annex blocks, but shows the bungalows next to the pool in their brochure. The beach was very close by and some of the shacks on that part of the beach have clubed together and pay for security to keep the hawkers away. If you've been before you'll know what I mean. It can get very tiresome being pestered every few minutes to buy stuff. But, hey, some people like that, the girls that do the manicures and massages are lovely to talk to and really appreciated the baby and kids clothes that we took plus a huge bag of stuffed toys. You'll soon get rid of them and lets face it you don't need half the clothes you take. You can get your washing done for less than 300 ruppees. If you go to Panjin and have any cash to spare you could always leave some at Mother Theresa of Calcutta's place next to St John Bossco's boys school. Don't miss Ingo's Saturday night market, even the Indian's love it. Great live music and lots of stalls and international food stalls. You'll even find an original hippie or two. Last of all if your going say hello to the lads and MAX. Max is a hand reared squirrel/chipmonk that visits at breakfast and sleeps in a box under the bar.
Goa: Just the best
Just returned after 2 weeks of sheer bliss in a great country, what can you say lovely people, great weather, Fab food, all that why it was freezing back home in England. Silver sands is in a great location 2 mnis from the Beach and right in the middle of Candolim with loads of restaurants/bars on your doorstep. We stayed in a superior room which was spotless and had a huge double bed, it also included AC,Sat TV and the all important fridge so you could enjoy that late afternoon Beer on your balcony. The food in the hotel has improved greatly over the last 18 months from being a little disappointing to really lovely now and would recommend trying it at least once during your stay. The shacks on the beach are all great and you tend to find one that suits your own needs but the food in every shack we have been in (9th time to Goa) has been excellent and great value for money. At night there are loads of restaurants to choose from but some of the best we have found are these, The curry house on beach road; great indian & chinise. Fishermans Cove on the main road; Will always be in the top bracket, great choice of just about everything. Cato Loco opposite F/Cove; Brill european food if you fancy something more familiar (Roasts,Chops,Stews) very good value. MoJo's at Baga next to Sat night market; the best English Breakfast in Goa by miles, rest of menu top draw as well. The best till last, the 2 best restaurants by far though are both co run Ram. The first is his & Linda's Carvery above the shops on beach road, the food is beautiful and you get loads it is also a lovely setting being a roof top restaurant/bar. The second of his restaurants is the Cactus (shepards pie) restaurant on the main road about 5 mins walk from the top of beach road. as the name suggests it does the pie as a special(really good as well) but don't let that put you off, there bombay potatoes must be the best in goa and the fish just melts in your mouth. Thes two are an absolute must visit when your are in north goa, hope you have as good a time as we always do! have fun and chill.
Brilliant,Loved it!
My partner and I travelled with first choice which Iwould highly recommend. The new 767's they use are great, loads of leg room,I'm 6" 2".The 9 hr flight passed quite quickly with the in seat entertainment, films,tv,games.Arrival at the airport was'nt as bad as expected although if the local lads left the luggage on the belt instead of putting them on the floor it would help. When you get outside let the boy's take your bags it's easier than saying no and give them a pound.Abit of a shock as you walk down to the coach, traffic, cows, noise etc.A taxi is faster, but the coach is more interesting. The apartments on arrival look ok,we had the superior room, very large, air con, fan, fridge and cleaned every day, nice attempt at towel sculptures as well.We had breakfast 1st morning, but walk round the corner to Alexandra's good food, very friendly. The beach is gorgeous,a bit messy but remember where you are and accept everything for what it is.Look out for the sunbed boys running to you on your first visit but say you have a sunbed and go to the purple one's,owned by Santana and he and his lads will look after you all day every day, drinks, moving you near the sea etc.We only went for 7 days, our 1st time so didnt explore much but there are loads of good eating places and to sit and watch the world and his dog and cow pass by.Mango grove on the main road to the right was our fav.Take a cab to Calangute for a bit of a culture shock but again all part of the Goa experience. When leaving for the airport take a cab 15 mins before the coach is due,get there early, you'll be furthur up the queue outside. It is unorganised chaos inside but relax, getting uptight does'nt get you anywhere.Flight home just shy of 11 hrs,but again comfortable. As an overview go for 2 wks minimum,3 would be better, settle as quickly as possible to enjoy everything about this wonderful, friendly place. There are possibly bigger and better apt,s to stay in but we would go back to the Silver Sands 52 wks of the year if we could.Fantastic time.
Perfect location
First time in main land India. Found Goa a facinating place has everything to offer any type of traveller. If the bars and tourist areas get too much then there are numerous trips to do so you can get out and see the real India. We found the silver sands excellant and so was our tour company first choice - best aircraft and ammenities by far. Situated just yards from the beach and small village area we had the choice to be quiet or lively each day/night. Hotel staff very attentive. Food very good - spoilt for choice at very low cost. Must try the sheetal opposite the hotel best curry ever !No one had dehli belly ! but do take or buy a mossie net. Newtons the supermarket sells all sizes for 650 rupee. Trips not to miss are the house boat, crocidile hunt, dughaser falls - all obtained via Johns boat tours on the beach road candolim - they have other offices in the area.
loved the location
we traveled to goa for the first time in november, after a long flight (9-30 mins) the silver sands resort is basic but clean, also it is only 5 mins walk to the beach, If yu haven't been to goa your in for a treat, that is once you get your head round all the poverty. the people are very friendly, and they can't do enough for you. It is a very different type of holiday. There are loads of bars and restaurants within a short distance from the hotel and the food is superb and very cheap we paid £2-00 for a steak with all the trimmings . delicious !!! there are loads of taxis or tut tuts what an experaince that was the fares are so cheap and they will wait for you we spent 5 hours on the mapsa beach and the taxi was there when we were ready to go back nothing is too much trouble also i reccomend a bar called sweet chillies on wednesday night it's carnival time and great fun also pop along to bar gazebo rudy & clary & lanky will make you very welcome and the food is wonderful . give her sunday roast a try lovely grub we are going back very soon
Loved every minute ...
Everyone working at Silver Sands was polite, friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Stayed in a superior room which was absolutely massive, complete with very large balcony. Room was cleaned every day, floors washed, towels arranged in shapes on beds (entwined hearts for valentine's day - the only acknowledgement I received !!!!). Locals very friendly, food in restaurants - gorgeous. If I had to moan about anything, it would be breakfast - very dull and very slow - but only if I had to moan! Would definitely go again
we enjoyed the laid back silver sands
stayed at the silver sands over xmas and must admit the rooms are very , very basic, we stayed in one of the bungalows. Cannot comment on the food as we did not eat there , we just had a coffee on our balcony before we went to the beach. The location was great , very near all the restaurants in Candolim and very close to the beach. We tried a restaurant called Angaara which belongs to the Silver Sands and it is excellent. Didn't use the pool as we always go to the beach. I found the hotel staff to be absolutely fantastic , they are so lovely, friendly and helpful. Would definately stay here again as it is very cheap and for what you pay I think it is okay.
Stayed in better
Having stayed in Goa 7 times previously we knew what to expect, but I have to say we were a little disappointed when shown to our Bungalow no 116. We had asked for a quiet room, and this one backed on to the reception/bar/restaurant area - never going to be quiet, but hey we just couldn't be bothered to ask to be moved. The room was quite small and very dimly lit, the mattress was the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on, certianly not missing it! Breakfast was very hit and miss, although we usually just opted for the free juice and tea/coffee and then headed down to the beach for food. The beach is very close by, although I agree with another reviewer that calling this place a beach resort takes the mickey somewhat! We use a shack on the beach which is down towards Sinquerim, about a 20 minute briskish walk from the hotel, it is called Siora Paradise, and is owned and run by a fantastic guy named Sid, we have know him for over 5 years now, and have never been served up anything other than fantastic food and drinks, the King fish with mushroom and prawn sauce is a must. Sid used to co-run another shack called Radha, which is a little closer, which is currently being run by Sid's brother, another fantastic cook. Another shack worth a mention is Club 21 which is closer still. I have to say we were a little disappointed with a lot of the restaurnats along the "strip", as the service left a lot to be desired, it seems there is a shortage of waiters this season, maybe some of the Taxi drivers should think about retraining!!! It is worth headng out of Candolim, for some cheaper food options, there are some excellent restaurants around Nerul (Laxmi, Naik and See You), a taxi should only cost around 200rps return. Anyway hope you enjoy your time in Goa, we will be back in December, staying at Prazeres again this time for our sins!
silver sands better than most
Returned from silver Sands 22nd Jan after a brilliant 2 week stay. Don't let your 1st impression put you off, the rooms are basic, but clean and tidy. Our beds were changed every other day with clean towels every day. Staff are wonderful and friendly, location is great for the beach, and the road to the side is great for restaurants and drinking. Would recommed Alexandras and further away at middle Baga a fantastic restaurant called East meets West. The beach is amazing - try Bobbys Shack for good food and great staff, ask Raj for a massage on the beach. A good jewelers to buy fab diamonds is Amigos in Candolim which was recommended to us by our travel agent. Best of all there are no bugs, didn't see any mosquitos either, even the dogs are friendly. It was our 1st trip and we will be going back to the Silver Sands soon. Previous reviews said there was building work and a rubbish dump behind the hotel, this is not true, its the quietest place I have ever stayed in and very clean. don't take fancy clothes, you don't need them its so laid back and its hard to spend money everything is so cheap.
I'll be back
Returned from silversands holiday village christmas eve after a two week stay in the superior rooms. This was our first visit to Goa and it was indeed a fantastic holiday. firstly the location of the property literally 3 minutes walk to the beach .............How can you beat that other than having a hotel on the beach? Its also set on a quiet road away from the tooting horns of the cars on the busy Candolim main road. Restaurants are also 5 minutes walk away. The most amazing thing about the holiday was the fantastic choice of food we stayed bed and breakfast and ate out every night which is a must in Goa............. Where and how do l start to explain the quality of the food HERE GOES. Firstly CHOICE an array of dishes from pastas to fish of the day to tiger prawns and of course an authentic curry l can still taste the freshness of the flavours in my mouth if l sit back and think of some of the food l had. Every evening was an excitement to go out and have something different everynight knowing that it was going to be fresh and tasty to say the least COST......well goa has to be the best place on the planet for value / eating out You can literally eat out for as little as £1 that would get you something like a spaghetti with mushrooms and cheese sauce hhowever my favourite was tiger prawns £7.................the list is endless but something for every taste. Candolim beach is a lovely beach soft sand and plenty of space its a long stretch of coastline. One day walked along the beach to Calangute (about 45 mins ) Preferred Candolim over Calangute it was quiter. Had lots of outfits made at the tailors trouser suit, top, linen pants the attention to detail was fantastic. A tipical price was £12 for a pair of 100% linen trousers l just took in items and they copied them to the finest detail (even putting the hoop hangers for the hanger on ) l didnt really barter with them very much as l was so gobsmaked at the quality of workmanship. l met other holiday makers who had had wool suits made and leathe jackets. Womans leather jacket £30 mans wool suit £50 ............made to measure ladies and gentlemen! ! ! ! Some people on the beach felt a little hassled by the Goan beach sellers but it didnt bother me l was happy to get to know and understand them. l chatted with some everyday and went to there house one evening and it gave me a great understanding of there life Lastly l must mention Firstchoice who we flew with 10/10 THEY LOOK AFTER YOU................plenty of legroom, leather seats they supply you with a blanket.socks.eyemask, earplugs, own little tv with movies. Meals were brilliant and halfway through the flight they come around with a hot wet refreshing face towel. Staf very friendly DONT FORGET ITS A 10 HOUR FLIGHT ONCE AGAIN WELLDONE FIRSTCHOICE.............................. So to sumarise my holiday beautiful beach, wonderful food, Goan hospitality ( You truly are a guest in there country ) 30/35 degrees everyday and not a mosquito in site ......................................THANKYOU GOA FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART YOU MAKE EVERY OTHER DESTINATION A SECOND I WILL BE BACK TO SEE YOUR BEATIFUL STATE VERY SOON X X X
