Hotel Description:

The Hotel is pleasantly sited, being within the Gardens of The Old Cataract, and has the advantage of sharing many of The Old Cataract facilities. The rooms are of more or less the same size, and all are decorated and furbished in a modern style. There are several restaurant outlets, one with a Nubian theme, styled in the mode of a Nubian Village House.

" A lower budget hotel, than the... "

A lower budget hotel, than the historic Cataract Hotel but well located on the same site.

Our room was clean and comfortable with an excellent 'free upgrade' view of the Nile and Elephantine Island. We could also see the Old Cataract Hotel to the right.

We had last stayed in this hotel in August 2006 and had been pleased with the quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Sadly, this summer a loud and badly behaved group of teenagers seemed determined to destroy any sense of luxury that the pool and grounds held, and constant tour groups stretched the already poor menu to the limit.

The hotel seemed permanently short of towels, the electricity and lift was unreliable and the staff seemed blase.

Next year? well, maybe it is time to find another hotel from which to enjoy Aswan!

" The New Cataract shares its grounds... "

The New Cataract shares its grounds with the historic Cataract Hotel, of Agatha Christie fame and is a lower budget hotel, but still very well located.

We booked three nights in Aswan through a web-site as we had already arranged flights and accommodation in Luxor.

August is the low season, so the hotel was very quiet, but staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed breakfast on the terrace; we used the 'Old' Cataract pool and the outdoor Terrace bar with its fantastic view of Elephantine Island and the Nile.

Our large room was on the 8th floor. It was clean and comfortable with excellent views of the river to the right. We had not paid the supplement for a Nile view, so this side view was a bonus. We could also see the unfinished obelisk quarry to the left.

The hotel is a short walk from the Ferial gardens, the ferry to Elephantine Island, and the spectacular Nubian museum. Taxis outside took us to the Philae Sound and Light show one night and back again the next morning to enjoy the island by daylight.

Looking forward to returning to this hotel in August 2007!
