Basically a good hotel for a short break when all you are looking for is good value, good weather, good food, good pool, accessible beach and you don't mind going to bed early. We went there over Easter. Sunshine every day except last day and temperatures around 22degrees.... more

Having just returned from a February half-term weeks holiday at the Sol Azur, and after having read mixed reviews beforehand, here are my thoughts: ROOMS: Yes, the bedrooms are a bit tired and dated and perhaps don't warrant the 4* rating, but considering what we paid for a... more

The hotel is quite comfortable and we had a room with balcony and seaview which was a bonus. unfortunately we must have chosen the wrong time to go as the place was fairly empty with limited entertainment. hammamet is probably perfect for those who just wants a beach... more

This is the first hotel we have ever returned to and it lived up to our recollection of the previous year. The rooms are a little tired admittedly, but the excellent food coupled with the friendly and courteous staff more than made up for the rooms. Many hotel staff... more

Absolutely fantastic!!
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Sol Azur Hotel in Hammamet from 09.09.07 to 16.09.07. We were somewhat apprehensive about our holiday after having read some of the comments on this website and were surprised to find that our experience of the hotel was very different to that of others. The staff were dedicated, friendly and constantly trying to ensure that our stay was as comfortable as possible, particularly the animation team who always tried to get everyone involved in the activities around the complex both during the day and at night and were a credit to the hotel! The food in both the poolside bar at lunchtime and in the restaurant in the evenings was beautiful (menu selection at lunch at an additional cost and buffet style menu at dinner). There was a bit of a scrumdown at the evening meal so we found it better to go along to this later (around half eight) to avoid this!! Our room contained everything we needed (hairdryer, fridge, safe, tv, telephone) and the view from our room was magnificent, overlooking both the pool and the beach. The only downside to the holiday was having to share a table with other couples at dinner but that was a very small price to pay for such a fantastic week. Best holiday of my life!! P.S. if you get the chance to do the two-day Safari trip to the Sahara desert don't pass this up as it is the experience of a lifetime!
Not as good as last time!
This was our second visit to the Bel Azur and we were very disappointed this time. Having had a fabulous time 2 years ago we booked the Bel Azur but we will not be going back. The staff are very friendly as long as you treat them with the respect they deserve. I was appauled at how some other guest spoke to them. The maids and bell-boys are paid next to nothing but do their job willingly and without fuss. The food would have been good had other guests not been so greedy......(1 nationality inparticular) I have never seen anything like it. A large bowl of watermelon would vanish in seconds........9 slices each seems a little excessive!!! And don't get me started on the cheese! One woman was kicked in the leg because she happened to be in the way of a man piling food on his plate. The management are aware of the problems (enough British holidaymakers complained while we were there) but are reluctant to do anything about it because they stand to loose a lot of money however many of the Brits who where there at the same time as us said they wouldn't return. I could probably go on for longer but I think I've said enough. At least if you do decide to go you'll be gauranteed great weather and a lovely beach!!!!
Relaxing, Cheap, Sunny and Really nice - Eve and Len
My husband and I stayed for one week at the end of June '07. Some of the bad reviews worried me a bit but I have to say that we loved the place. The grounds were immaculate...the reception area was spotless.. we had a sea view and it was a fantastic room...Although it took the cleaning lady the entire day to actually clean the room and this was one main problem people might have with the place because they would take the pillows at 10:00....sweep the room later that day...then take the towels....then bring towels at about 5pm but seeing as we went on holiday to do anything BUT stay cooped up in a room all day it did not really matter enough to ruin the holiday!! Breakfast was fun....the mix of nationalities is interesting when you compare manners or the lack thereof but we didnt have any problems really...just got our food and table like everyone else....I had pancakes most mornings from the grill outside...The dinner buffet was excellent with a good varied choice and the staff overall, especially our waiter were all extremely courteous. The markets have to be seen as the prices are great if you like to haggle...overall it is a very cheap holiday once you get there... Only problem I really had with the hotel was the annoying "Animation" dudes around the pool....the night time "entertainment" was embarassingly bad and they spend the day waving darts and volley balls at you asking if you want to play...They got a bit irritating but we just ignored them All in all it's a great place and we loved it and it has everything you need...pool....sea...shops...and a thalasso centre in the adjoining hotel...you can use the facilties in the adjoining hotels too I think you just need to get a guest pass...not sure...
Sun and fun
The Sol Azur is a huge hotel situated directly on one of the many beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. It is located about 1 kilometer from the medina and the town centre. Our room was of average size and adequately furnished. Our twin beds were also very comfortable. We had buffet-style meals in a huge dining room. À la carte was also available at lunchtime. This hotel has a huge pool and was well kept throughout our stay. Being part of the Azur complex we also had access to the facilities of the Royal Azur and the Bel Azur hotels. We are planning to return to Tunisia next year and I would probably choose the same hotel.
Hotel good, hammamet? - dont bother!
We stayed at the Sol Azur mid may 2006 for 2 weeks. The weather was excellent, temperatures varied enormously from nice and warm, to too hot. The positives: The hotel itself was clean and tidy, especially our rooms. We had a lovely outlook - pool and beach. The hotel gounds were well kept. The pool was very good Excellent choice of food in the evenings; salad, soups, variety of meat dishes, vegetarian options, lovely desserts and lots of fruit. You can use the facilities at the other two neighbouring hotels, which is great if you want to dine somwhere different. Highly recommend the thalossotherapy pool at the royal azur. Close to mini markets where you can buy much cheaper bottled water and snacks. Good selection of dishes available at lunchtime, good pool side bar. Generally a fairly quite hotel especially at night. Nice sand down on beach. The negatives: Staff on reception not particularly friendly or helpful, very slow at sorting out problems. The door to one of our rooms would not lock, anyone could walk in and steal our belongings, and they didn't seem to think this was a problem! The problem was sorted out eventually. Constant harrassment (by the pool, on the beach, in the grounds) from entertainment staff wanting you to go on trips, play games, exercise, walk down the beach with them! etc. Entertainment in the evening very poor. Choice at breakfast could be much improved, fruit on offer in the evening often mouldy. Generally not a very welcoming atmosphere although staff in the dining room of an evening where much more jolly and welcoming. Beach area could be much improved only have to walk a short distance from the hotel and the beach looks really grubby and dirty. Hammamet: Expect to be harrassed, shopping is not a relaxing experience, people not very friendly, no night life, not picturesque, will never return. Yasmine Hammamet: concrete jungle, not much better.
Avoid Hammamet, head for Port el Kantaoui!
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Sol Azur nearing the end of Sept- we booked a late deal, and wanted a peaceful holiday with lots of sunshine. On the whole we had a really peaceful relaxing stay. The hotel was perhas a little well worn, but the rooms and bathroom were spacious and clean. Staff were generally very friendly. The hotel is right beside a gorgeous sandy beach. The Bel Azur had a great little restaurant on a peninsula right by the beach with really great veggie opts at a very reasonable price. Being able to wander through the sister hotels and use the facilities there was a plus point. Most annoying point was having to share tables with other guests- we were permanently sat beside the same couple, which by day 3 was rather irritating. The hotel food was ok, but as every night was a buffet, we had to persist in what felt like an ongoing scrum with our fellow russian guests. We travelled with Panorama- we found our welcome meeting a real waste of time- the restaurant recommended to us by the rep- Les Cascades was mediocre. A few days later we found another restaurant- Les Trois Moutons, also in Hammamet, where the staff were charming and the food equally good. We also went on a day trip to Carthage, the Bardot Museum in Tunis and Sidi Bou Said, again booked through Panorama. This was quite a tedious day, our Tunisian guide didnt seem to know what he was talking about, however the best part of this was Sidi Bou Said- one of the most picturesque villages I've ever been to, and also a great opportunity to get away from the tour guide for a wander by ourselves! Another down side about the hotel was that in the evening we felt rather isolated due to location. We didnt want a wild holiday, but it would have been great to have had some activity just outside the hotel gates- there was literally nothing. As it stood we needed to get a cab ride into the centre of Hammamet- which although inexpensive was a hassle. For a very quiet beach holiday, I would recommend the Sol Azur, though having visited Tunisia before Port El Kantoui is much more tourist friendly, and not too commercial- given the choice again, i'd perhaps avoid Hammamet!
Would not return.
Decided to return to the Sol Azur after having such a good holiday last year. On arrival we noticed a difference to the hotel, the fountains to the front of the hotel were dirty and the seating area in reception had cigarette burns and were in need of cleaning. We had a lovely sea view, but the room was rather drab, and the furniture was in need of repair. The pool area is still superb as is the guy who tends to the sun loungers, he always had a smile for everyone. The main fault we encountered on this holiday were the Russian and French guests, they were noisy, obnoxious and very trouble some. If you don't want to be pushed, shoved or spoken to rudely at breakfast or dinner, it would be better if you waited until they had been served.
Most Boring Holiday EVER!!!! Review from Ireland
Ok, where to start??? This was my first and last time to Tunisia , it was one of the worst holidays I ever had. We stay at the Sol Azur hotel in Hammamet, and for a four star hotel it certainly did not live up to the standards we were expecting or to the photos we saw of the hotel on the website before our holiday. This hotel was stuck back in time, there was a constant smell from the carpets and the sewage. The staff were not very friendly or helpful. When trying to have breakfast or evening dinner it is every man for himself, there was a mixer of nationalities - You had , French, German, Russian, Algerians and they must be the rudest people I have ever come across. They don't know the meaning of queuing. Tough luck if you are standing next in line, be prepared to be pushed and shoved out of the way. Their kids even bite you to get a head and thats the truth. Such rudeness!! And sometimes there wasn't any cutlery or even a cup to have some tea. There is nothing to do in Hammamet, the most boring, run down, flithy place you can imagine. You have to get a taxi to go anywhere!! Don't go on the Pirate ship as when people vomit it is left and not cleaned up, oh and if you faint be prepared to be put in a corner and left there. Only for the beach and the sun I think I would have gone home long ago. Just a well it was only for one week. But as they say "Different Strokes for Different Folks" but not for me. It amazes me to read some of the glowing reviews??? it feels like my boyfriend and I were in a completely different area. Sorry for the bad review but its what we experienced and many others we spoke to felt the same. Oh yes and if you English or Irish be prepared to be treated differently than if you were FRENCH.
Wonderful Hammamet
My husband and I have just returned from 2 weeks at the Sol Azur in Hammamet. Wonderful, blissful, can't praise it enough. This is 5 times to Tunisia for us, Hammamet is the best resort by far, unless you want brand new for tourist only type of resort. The hotel is superb, the rooms I have to say are a bit tired looking as regards to decor, but extremely comfortable and very clean. The staff are great, the animation team and the pool guy are outstanding. The food is lovely. The outside breakfast area is a joy, what a way to start the day. The evening dining room is stunning, with food to match. Please if you go to Hammamet don't be put of by what folk say about the Medine, yes you can get a bit of hassle but it's all extremely good natured. Tunisian folk do not understand our concept of window shopping. I you pick up an item and look at it they assume that you want to buy and will start to haggle for a price. You only need to say no thank you, and walk on. All speak English. They are a wonderfully friendly people. I can't wait for our next trip to the Sol Azur, next year, Enchallah (God willing in Arabic) may not be spelt correctly though. Happy Sol Fan Plymouth.
Very Quiet Lovely Holiday
Hey Just returned from a one week holiday at the Sol Azur with two girlfriends - the hotel was lovely and what you would expect from a 4 star if a little dated. The food was really excellent so much so that we didnt go out to dinner at all (which we normally would at least once despite being half board). The pool was lovely but the private beach is nicer and even better is the guy who gets you the best sun loungers every morning. We wanted a relaxed sun holiday and thats what we got - we didnt even venture out of the complex of three hotels (sol, Bel and royal Azur) but were happy with a couple of drinks at night time. There is a touch of the complex in 'Dirty Dancing' about his resort with Aqua Aerobics in the pool everyday at 11, dance classes in the afternoon and volleyball on the beach - was very entertaining to watch !!!! Watch out for the Russian Tourists however - they are for the most part extremely rude - and woe betide anyone who gets between them and the buffet !!!!! IN all would hightly recommend the Sol Azur for a relaxed, quiet and Very hot (40degrees) holiday. Things to note - there is a 1 1/2 hour transfer time to the airport - the carpet throughout the hotel is a bit pongy; There is vaguely annoying kids entertainment every night by the pool ! Great things - very clean; very nice staff; excellent food; very few mossies and the clearest sea water imaginable !!!!! Enjoy BB - Ireland
