Azzurro Club Estrella Hotel Reviews
" We were booked into the Casa Laguna... "
Submitted By: Mrs J Jones
We were booked into the Casa Laguna but because it was full were moved to the Azzuro. At first we were pleased but then encountered a host of problems which resulted in us paying to move to the Azzorro's sister (equally bad) hotel the Sosua Bay. (Both owned by Star)
The problems we encountered at the Azzuro were:
- Our toilet not working (we called out maintenance 4 times - on one occasion it flooded the bathroom).
- Our TV working (we don't go away to watch TV but believe me 2 weeks here and you will need it!)
- Weekend visitors (including a group of over 30 students) taking over the whole place and waking us up at 4am.
When we asked to move rooms we were offered one by the bar which we declined.
Many of the staff were not overly friendly, the food was basic & usually cover in flies (ummm....).
Unless you love sunbathing or surfing I would give this a miss - there is nothing to do & the trips available cost a fortune.
The Casa Laguna is a lot smaller but cleaner and more friendly but to be honest offers nothing more.

" I got back from Azzurro in early May... "
Submitted By: Miss K Savage
I got back from Azzurro in early May 2006 and I will tell you more about the hotel and its activities so you have no worries while traveling over there.
First and foremost, we weren't too sure about going to Cabaret since it's in the heart of the city and the ratings we had read online weren't all that good. I am 18 years old and I traveled with my 19year old boyfriend for the first time and let me assure you; we had a blast!
While traveling with Gotraveldirect.com, the service was absolutely amazing (thank you Lise, for everything!). I would greatly suggest this site to book a vacation; low prices and amazing staff. Anywho, we arrived at the Azzurro Beach Resort (a bus of about 60 people) and the check in was phenomenally quick. Our room had 2 doubles beds; we could of gotten a King size bed but we were already unpacked at that point so that seemed useless. The rooms were clean, the mini-bar (2 Pepsi, 2 7-up and 2 beers) were free and stocked every other day. Sure, one morning there was a spider in the bathtub but you have to keep in mind that you are in the Dominicans and not in Canada. We had no problem at all with our room as we rented a safe deposit box for 20$US. No gecko or cockroaches in the room; well, we didn't see some anyways.
The staff over at Azzurro are amazing! The activities staff always have something for everyone; either it's yoga, volleyball tournaments, dancing, ping pong tournaments and so on. Plus, you can take a boogie board, a kayak for free for 1hour a day which we thought was pretty fun. There's also a surfboard shop close to the hotel so you can rent a surfboard or just bribe the locals to have one.
There are plenty of vendors that are trying to sell you stuff on the beach.
A simple 'no gracias' usually does the work. Yes, they can be persistent but you have to stay firm. (Little tip : walk down the town for about 5 minutes and you will see a big white building written liquidation on it..... the stuff there is so cheap. *RHum bottle for 160 pesos which is about 5-6$U.S)
There were loungers for everyone and fresh new towels were given to you in exchange of the towel card everyday. The beach was neat, there were huge waves. It was also fun to see the locals walk down the beach; remember this is not really a Resort with gates and everything; it's in the heart of Cabarete.
The food at the hotel was good although we didn't like the French one. The buffet had lots of varieties and the Italian and Spanish restaurant were delicious! You only have to book a day in advance in order to eat at the 4 à-la-carte restaurants. The bars are stocked at the most and they're not cheap when giving you liquor. The bartenders are amazing and quick as lightening.
A lot of tours are offered at the hotel: we went to Sosua Bay (free shuttle; complimentary hotel of Azzurro) and we ate and went on the beach there for free. It was night eating at a 5* hotel without charge! Also, we went on the Catamaran. A must do! The banana boat is amazing; the staff is entertaining and the view is breathtaking. They take you to Sosua in order to do some snorkeling and that is really the highlight of the day. You know how they tell you not to buy tours from the beach? Well we bought the dune buggies tours and weren't disappointed. Only 65$ for both as it would of been 60$ each at the hotel. During that tour, we visited the banana trees, went to see a beach and even stopped in a small town; it really gets to you once you see how poor the Dominican really are.
Also, at night time, there is a movie for the little ones and after a show comes up. Usually it's dancing shows; they are really good. Props to the dancers! Two shows were about the travelers that went on stage to dance, drinks, etc. Entertaining!
The music at the hotel goes down until about midnight and then, if you take a stroll on the beach, you can get to the Bamboo nightclub. It is a typical Dominican club, had no problem with it, really safe. The drinks are about 90 to 100 pesos (about 3$US) but if you're smart, you fill up at the hotel.
Final note to say that Azzurro was great! And I would rate it about a 4*. It was clean, entertaining, the staff were amazing. We had an incredible time and would go back in a heartbeat.
