Ibis Gare Saint Charles

Booked this hotel as I was travelling by train rather than visiting Marseille per se. Arrived on the TGV from Paris and booked in immediately at about 20.00. Staff were courteous and the room was roomy, clean and quiet despite rebuilding works going on around the hotel (which will eventually make the area around the hotel much nicer than it looks now.) I was there during the heaviest snowfall in 25 years I am told. The hotel is at the back of the Gare St Charles and about a block away which makes it convenient from trains in any weather and situated at the top of about a hundred or so steps down to the main street. No one lifted a shovel to clear a step so it was quite an experience negotiating the steps through an avalanche of snow. Decided to use this hotel because the whole purpose of the trip was travelling by train to various places. The hotel is situated next to the Gare St Charles, but there is absolutely no noise from the station. The Staff at the hotel were extremely polite and efficient. The rooms were immaculately clean and very comfortable. The bathroom was large enough and also extremely clean and modern. Linen was changed every day if required. Only had two days so transport and accomodation had to be convenient. Airport bus (30-40min. & €8.50) to Gare St. Charles. Cross the station to Line A. The exit door here leads to Narvic Square, turn left and the Ibis is a few meters along the street. Typical Ibis, very clean, no noise, comfortable, basic. This hotel is located right at one secondary exit of the main train station (at the end of the 'A' track). Very nice if you arrive by train late at night or have to take a train early in the morning (if like me, you have paid your room the day before, you can ideally leave your room 10 minutes before train departure).
