not the best!!
from space_tripper1
We stayed at the pela hotel in july and sort of booked it through what people had thought of there stay there, regrettably. Firstly admittable not anyone's fault it was very hot there 122 degrees around the pool, skala kalloni is the hottest place on the island because of it's location, it also felt like that in our rooms because the rooms didn't have ceiling fans to move the air around, thus giving us no option but to hire the ac unit which never pulled the temp down much at all. Our toilet and tap water in our room stank like we where staying in a pubic lavatory in a park, a smell which didn't just effect our room but seemed to be every other one. Two very nice ladies we got speaking to had the same problem and after reporting it to both the holiday rep and one of the girls who owned the appartments had no joy on getting the issue resolved. We didn't use the water at all apart from the shower, for which we had a pair of flip flops i had with me so you could put them on to get in and out of the bathroom so not to walk on the floor in there, if you get our old room you welcome to use them i left them there!!. with half a water bottle we filled and used to get anything to flush down the toilet. Then there was a dog belonging to the hotel barking and howling through the night keeping alot of people awake, this got increasing worse through the week until on day 5 ourselves and other guests at the hotel had all had enough and complained, Finally a peaceful night sleep. In the morning myself and my wife went to pay off our slate, when wife thanked the owner for the getting the dog noise sorted, "the dog has puppies" she growled "and we had to take the dog away from her puppies when she was vunerable" she carried on, stupid me i though i was a paying guest on holiday for relaxation, nevermind hey and to think there must have only been 9 or ten stray dogs around, soon there will probably be some more, great. Just watch out as well thereslots of little tiny flies around called culicoides and i got bitten all over my legs & arms, so use a product containing deet, it seemed to work. Anyway there where some good points the pool was great, the grounds where very well kept, and while the dog was sleeping through the day perparing itself for the night the hotel was very peaceful. The food at the hotel is very good, we had the best greek salad and frappe there we had all holiday. Then again there isn't much choice in skala kalloni all the restaurant's do the same things. One restaurant which does need a mention is the Haioponio pizza restaurant (hope i've spelt it right, it's getting late) very friendly staff and far better food than Ambrosia!!!!! it has a big stone oven inside where they cook your pizza, nice. Beach was alright in skala kalloni but i would buy some gel shoes for the water because of the seaweed and the sand (it gets hot, very hot). We used the sun beds an English couple where renting for 5 euro's for the whole day, 2 beds 1 parasol and a cooler box for your water, and a nice chat. If you get the chance go to Molyvos i didn't we only seen it off a boat we where on, but it looked lovely, and must i say just around the corner from molyvos just off the shore we seen dolphins, 1st time ever. To sum up, a OK place to stay as a base if you can put up with tiny rooms, dodgy smells and barking. Its great in the day when your out and about or relaxing by the pool. Really must go to bed now but i will just finish off by saying the holiday in skala kalloni will always be remembered by us not for the problems but for the people we got speaking to whilst there, they made our holiday, so thank you, from Mark & Lyn.
peaceful & relaxing

Returned to Lebos for the 3rd time but 1st stay at the Pela. Very friendly hotel, great pool and pool area with bar and food available. Room was average for Greek hotel but the shower was the smallest I have seen! Short walk to beach and leisurely 8 minute stroll into the town. Plenty of restaurants and bars and prices are around half compared to other islands, i.e, a whole sea bass with salad etc was 8 euros in the restaurant facing the harbour. Skala Kalloni is a great base to explore the island but not for those who are looking for a vibrant night life. Will return to same hotel on our next visit to the island but will ensure that we don't get a room facing the boat building yard opposite with the three guard dogs!
Our third visit and the best yet!

Our third visit to Lesbos and the Pela Hotel. This time we booked a bed and breakfast package with First Choice as it was a cheaper option than flying independently and booking direct with the hotel. Worth checking prices every time as last year, the opposite was true. Thekla and her younger sister Pela were there to greet us, just like long lost family and we were delighted to be allocated one of the newly built rooms, which are bigger than the old style rooms and have a very good wetroom. Thekla told us they are gradually doing up all the old rooms as well as continuing with the building of a new block, but I can assure everyone there is no building work during the summer when guests are there. The weather this year was perfect and we saw some wonderful birds when we got off the beaten track as well as some rare orchids and other lovely things. We again ate at the Ambrosia (when we weren't eating at the Pela) where they remembered us from the previous two years and, as a result, we didn't pay for our drinks at all! Whatever we had to eat seemed to cost 30€ for the four of us which, in this day and age is a real bargain. Lovely food too. We have never, ever been to the same place three years running but we just can't fault the Pela and Lesbos so they'll no doubt be seeing us again.
a brilliant discovery

I decided to try this hotel after seeing some of the other reviews on this site. I must admit that I was slightly skeptical before I arrived at the hotel. However, when I got there, I discovered that it was as lovely as everyone had said. Its a small family run hotel that appeals to a very wide range of guests. Thekla and Pela are brilliant hosts that remember your name after the first day and how much sugar you have in your coffee! Rooms are clean and unusually for Greece, have good showers. The pool is a good size and has a great deck area with enough loungers! When we were there, many of the guests had been before and we can understand why. We'll definitely be back.
it's all true!

we found the pela by chance on first choice website then looked at trip advisor's reviews. on the basis of these reviews and the reasonable price we booked! we were not disappointed. Thekla, the owner (with her dad) was wonderful - she really cannot do enough for you. the pool, food and people were great. the location is fine, just 3 mins to beach and 10 mins to centre with great tavernas, such as the ambrosia. the beach isn 't the best but Ron's patch (the one with the "library") was great. The sea is seaweedy, so take some beach shoes. Do hire a car, we were only there for a week, but had a wonderful day out to Molyvos and Skala Sikamias - both very special places. We hired the car through Thekla (just 40 euros for one day). Nearly everyone we met were seasoned travellers but had all been to Lesvos and the Pela many times. The only 2 little things - the rooms are small (but not a problem) and there are many stray cats and dogs particularly in the town. can't wait to go again and hope we can stay for 2 weeks!

Having had a bit of a difficult journey (we had made the unwise decision to stay up to catch our 3.30AM taxi to the airport, suffered dreadful piped music on plane take off (!) and fans that didn't work on the transfer, we didn't have a great first impression, particularly as the rooms are somewhat small, though quite nice after a quick re-arrange - and you do have to pay 7 euros a day for air-con (and you do need it) That said, after a decent sleep, we began to appreciate the place, the beach is lovely in the autumn sunshine with the sea calm as a mill pond most of the time. The service is extremely good - there was never an occasion when service was unavailable. The pool is nice too - it is large (though in he photos, I think the photographer must have been lying down by the pol) Food is very cheap indeed on this island and of good quality, even a request for a drink alone quite often comes with a full selection fo tapas and/or complimentary desert, and if you like fish and squid this is a good place to be. A car is a good idea - and we're normally a bit sqeamish about driving in foreign countries, but had we had our driving licences, we would have felt quiite comfortable driving round...and would have saved the writer grumbling about being dragged around on excursions (they never give you enough time...) Overall, a very tranquil place to be...particurlarly good if you looking for somewhere not overdeveloped and for reading. P.S There are a lot of dogs and weirdly minature cats about Skali Kalloni but they are very friendly and in a way it is quite educational to see dogs in proper pack behaviour
Great hotel

Booked this hotel as a late deal after reading previous reviews on TripAdvisor. Went with two friends and can only echo previous comments on the site. Hotel situated in a quiet location but not far from the sandy beach and the tavernas and cafes of Skala Kalloni - 10 minute walk. Rooms were quite small but adequate and ours looked over the beautifully kept gardens. Pool was great though rather cold when we visited with a handy pool bar which was open for most of our stay. Thekla and her father who run the hotel could not have been more helpful and really made our holiday - very sad to say goodbye. Most people were there for at least their second time - one couple had even been married there! - which says a lot for this great little place and for the people that run it. Skala Kalloni itself is a traditional Greek village and quiet but very relaxing. Good selection of tavernas in the square - our favourites were Ambrosia - try the stuffed onions! - and Enigma which was on the beach road. Have travelled extensively through Greece, it's refreshing to visit an island that is so untouched by tourism. To get the best out of the island, you will need a car due to its size and lack of good public transport links. Some lovely places to visit - well worth the effort. Our favourites were Petra and Plomari. If you want a total chilled out holiday and want to experience the real Greece, then would thoroughly recommend going to Lesvos
Total Relaxation

I stayed at the Pela last month with my 12 year old daughter. The hotel is a perfect base for a relaxing holiday. It is run by two sisters who are extremely helpful & friendly. Although clean & comfortable, the rooms are very small & the self catering facilities do not allow you to do much more than make a cup of tea. But who wants to cook when they can go to one of the excellent tavernas & have a lovely meal for two for 20 euros? The hotel also offers food, which is perfect if you want lunch & can't summon up the energy to leave the pool (it is about 5 minutes walk to the beach & 10 minutes to the main part of the resort). The pool is a good size, with plenty of sun beds & umbrellas, even in August. In fact the whole of Skala Kalloni was very quiet, with few tourists. The locals were out & about in the village square in the evenings & the whole atmosphere was how Greece used to be back in the 70's before the lager louts arrived. This may be because the beach is not the most fantastic in Greece. However, it is clean, sandy & shelves gently into calm warm sea. There are also a couple of really nice tavernas right on the beach. I thought my daughter might be bored, but she absolutely loved it & hated to leave. In particular she enjoyed playing with some very friendly stray dogs that lived on the beach & were fed by all the Brits (& some locals)in the tavernas. Don't come here for buzzing nightlife, water parks, women in thongs or men with tattooes. But if you want an old fashioned beach holiday in a quiet, relaxing place with good food & friendly people thjs is perfect.
This hotel is a little gem

We are just back from a two week stay at the Pela Hotel at Skala Kalloni. What a lovely little hotel. Apart from the smallish rooms and the usual dodgy Greek plumbing which on this occasion included a shower with a curtain that clung to your bum, this was a lovely place. Although we booked self catering, we ended up having breakfast at the hotel every day as the terrace where it was served was lovely and peaceful with glorious views and the buffet breakfast excellent value for money. They also did English breakfast at a supplement. The best feature of the hotel was the enormous pool with lots of space and plenty of loungers, plus a pool bar (not quite open all the time when we we there but Thekla the excellent manager of the hotel brought our drinks to us) and the friendly, helpful staff. We had several meals at the hotel in the evening when we were too lazy to walk into Skala Kalloni square, and they were of a good standard. Our favourite taverna was Ambrosia, just off the square, by the church, where we ate on numerous occasions and never had a bad meal. We hired a car and did a lot of bird watching (in an amateur kind of way as we're not proper twitchers) and the wild life, scenery and lovely flora were breathtaking once you got off the beaten track. Our favourite spot for lunch or a drink was the delightfully pretty fishing hamlet of Skala Silaminias. Nice tavernas round the harbour's edge and a lovely little chapel set into the rock. People ask why Lesbos is not a busy tourist island and I think it is because the beaches on not the greatest. But this was not a problem for us as we had the pool at the Pela Hotel so didn't miss the beaches at all. The other noticeable advantage of Lesbos is that the prices for meals and drinks are well below what we normally pay on other islands so that was an added bonus for us. All in all, a great holiday and our thanks to Thekla and her staff at the Pela for their wonderful hospitality.
What a Fantastic Place!!!
from Essexman_Abroad
Have just spent two wonderful weeks staying in this lovely hotel run by fantastic people. If you like lazy, relaxed & quiet, then this is the place for you. Set in beautiful grounds and run by the kindest people you could wish to meet, the Pela is the best accomodation my wife & I have stayed at in over 20 years of travelling Greece & its islands. The hotel pool is amazing, you never have trouble finding a lounger to use & if you prefer the beach it is less than a three minute walk away. Although the rooms are slightly small this is more than made up for by the relaxed atmosphere & beautiful surroundings. The standard of cleanliness is extremely high (new towels & sheets twice a week, & room cleaned six days per week), and if you need any help or advice then nothing is too much trouble for the owners & staff of this family run establishment. Very popular with Dutch & French people, many of whom have returned year after year, this is certainly a place we will return to in the future.

A small and friendly family-run hotel, this was one of the best we have stayed in. The food was very good and genuine Greek, not "tourist", the rooms were simple but comfortable and clean. Above all, Thekla could not have been more helpful and attentive - a lovely lady who... more
