Pela Hotel Reviews
" Why we highly recommend the Pela Hotel "
Submitted By: GrealyParkerThis year we noticed that many of the rooms have started to be upgraded, as well as as some new studios being built too. The food in the restaurant was excellent; the a la carte menu had a good variety of dishes and all very good value too. The well kept gardens and shrubs were in full colour, well tended by an excellent gardener.
One of the reasons we recommend the Pela Hotel to our friends is that it has a lovely calming athosphere where everyone if made feel welcome. We feel we are 'coming home to family' when we go back there each year, nothing is too much bother for the fam=mily to provide. Ther are fun, friendly and every so helpful
Advice: relaxing, fabulous restaurants and tavernas, friendly local people, great beach, great for couples
Activities: Hard to say because most are good but the Restaurant Marina is excellent, and good wine list too
Good for: Beach

Submitted By: Mr Peter DThe hotel is in a beautiful spot and is only a short walk from the beach. The village is a ten minute stroll and has a good selection of tavernas. We have never encountered a surly waiter and they seem genuinely pleased to see you, which is more than you can say for spanish resorts.

" Before we went to Lesvos in August... "
Submitted By: Mr G GilletteIn the travel agent we told them we wanted to go to Greece, we weren't taking children and didn't want to see children. This may seem strange to some people but if you have children and get the chance to go away without them you'll understand why it was said.
The travel agent handed us a Sunvil brochure telling us it was just what we were looking for. After looking at the brochure we settled on Skala Kalloni, there's nothing for kids to do unless they're into bird watching.... Yeah!! Right!! Like that's going to happen!
Reviews on the Pela Hotel looked promising and most said how friendly the owners were.
Listen to me... They are not friendly! They are two of the grumpiest looking women on Lesvos and their looks reflect their demeanor.
We stayed for a week and apart from "Kali Spera" I doubt we shared more than two dozen words. It wasn't for a lack of trying either. Any visit to the bar resulted in minimal conversation, the hotel wasn't exactly busy so it wasn't as if there was no time for small talk.
There were a few people there that had been there for the past 4-6 years. They had more lasting conversations but they were far from chatty. I suspect it's these hardened Pela people that are giving the reviews, they need to get out more! See a few other islands, hotels and countries! I've traveled a fair bit and I would say it's one of the un-friendliest hotels I've stayed in!
Back to the "no kids holiday"...... Be warned! The hotel lets the local Greek families use the pool facilities if they buy a drink in the bar. That would be okay but the Greek children take over the pool area, running and screaming uncontrolled by their parents. The hotel owners admitted to us that they didn't like the locals using the pool area because they were noisy but they never asked the parents to control their children. As long as the money keeps rolling in at the bar they're happy for them to be there and sod the tourists.
Talking of money at the bar, whenever we bought a drink the price that was rung up on the till was never the amount charged. The till would show two euros seventy cents and we'd be charged over five euros. I expect this is a Pela Hotel tax dodge but an annoying one especially as the same round of drinks would cost different prices on different nights. We'd recommend sitting in a taverna by the beach having your evening drink, you'll pay no more for the privilege.
On the Saturday night the whole pool and restaurant area was taken over for a Greek christening. There was no warning that this would happen. Children were running all over the separate hotel building away from the restaurant area. Uncontrolled, they were even running about on the second floor. At midnight I decided enough was enough and went to complain. I was not the only one complaining! To be fair the hotel owners stopped the children running riot but why should you have to complain to the owners?
The hotel has built more rooms on the left as you enter. Apparently these are family rooms. I can only believe that the service is going to get worse and the pool area will be over crowded next year when these rooms are occupied.
Breakfast was plagued with wasps, there were wasp traps all around the bar and dining area but this didn't stop you being pestered constantly and trying to fend them off your yoghurt and honey, orange juice, toast and marmalade.... If you're eating something sweet you'd have a wasp for company! We never had this problem anywhere else and presume there's a huge nest nearby but the owners aren't getting anything done about it. The traps looked like they'd been there for some time so it must be a long standing problem. The breakfast was typical for Greek hotels and good quality but the evening meal was a different matter. If you require an evening meal you need to inform the hotel before 3PM. There is no choice! Only a set menu so be warned if you're a fussy eater. I'd recommend going into the village and visiting one of the many tavernas..... Now there's friendly people!
The village centre is blocked off to vehicular traffic at night and the local tavernas spread across the main square, it's fantastic!
We recommend a visit to Skala Kalloni, it's a lovely area with great tavernas and a long beach. Perfect for a relaxing holiday........ Just don't use the Pela Hotel!
We'd also recommend Sunvil, unfortunately they're not arranging holidays to Lesvos after this season. The rep was readily available and a mine of information without being pushy!

" Having had a bit of a difficult... "
Submitted By: Mr John SmithThat said, after a decent sleep, we began to appreciate the place, the beach is lovely in the autumn sunshine with the sea calm as a mill pond most of the time. The service is extremely good - there was never an occasion when service was unavailable.
Food is very cheap indeed on this island and of good quality, even a request for a drink alone quite often comes with a full selection of tapas and/or complimentary desert, and if you like fish and squid this is a good place to be.
A car is a good idea and we're normally a bit squeamish about driving in foreign countries, but had we had our driving licenses, we would have felt quite comfortable driving round...and would have saved the writer grumbling about being dragged around on excursions (they never give you enough time).
Overall, a very tranquil place to be, particularly good if you looking for somewhere not overdeveloped and for reading.

" We had a delightful stay the last two... "
Submitted By: Mrs J HainesThe Pela Hotel is in a lovely spot very near the beach and just off the main road into Skala Kalloni centre so it would take about 8 to 10 minutes to walk into town for dinner in the evening.
The hotel itself has 30+ rooms, 6 of which have a kitchenette for self catering purposes. The rooms are small and basic but very clean with a daily maid service (except Sundays) and the towels and bed linen are changed twice a week. Although we opted for self catering, we wished we had booked bed and breakfast as we ate breakfast every day in the hotel and paid 5€ each.
Breakfast is taken on the lovely terrace overlooking unspoiled countryside and the buffet breakfast included cereals, fruit juices, yoghurt, fruit, various breads and cake, eggs cheese and meat plus tea and coffee and there was an English breakfast available at a supplement. We discovered that every room has a fridge so, had we known that, we would definitely have gone for B and B rather than self catering.
The Pela Hotel has two great assets; one is its wonderful swimming pool with pool bar, lots of space and plenty of loungers and the second is its manager, Thekla, a lovely girl who was so friendly and so keen to ensure that we had everything we needed. The service we received from her was second to none. Nearly everyone we spoke to in the hotel were return visitors, some having been coming to the same hotel for years, a fact that speaks for itself.
It's essential to hire a car in our view so that you can see this lovely island; the spring flowers were magnificent. Eating out seemed much cheaper than on other Greek islands and we tended to frequent a nice taverna in the evening, just off the square in Skala Kalloni by the church, called Ambrosia. We didn't have a bad meal and it was inexpensive.
All in all, a wonderful holiday and we will definitely be returning to The Pela Hotel.

Rooms: I had a very basic self catering room, however everything that was needed was there. Very clean and tidy. One comment is that you have to pay extra for the air-con.
Service: This was second to none.Yanis made sure all your needs were catered for. What a sweetie! Thekla, the manager goes out of her way to make you feel special, and her attention to my daughter was touching! She seemed to know all the guests names, and made sure she used them too!
Food: My goodness! I ordered a souvalaki and this 12" skewer arrived on my table complete with a mountain of rice and salad. The chicken was the best I have ever tasted. The salads were heaven, and the saganki scrumptious! WELL DONE!
Pool and Bar: The pool was beautiful. Clean and well maintained. Much to the delight of my daughter, I became the 'wasp/insect life saver' and we had lots of fun saving the insects from drowning. She felt very confident in the water, as she is learning to swim. The bar is by the pool and has all you need. There are swallows nesting in the eaves of the area, and these were a topic of conversation for the guests. They had chicks and were so pretty to watch. I asked Thekla if they were a problem, and she replied that she didn't want to get rid of them, and made little shelves under them so as their droppings would not upset the area...ahhh!
Area: We both slept until 11 o clock most mornings! There is nothing to wake you up! It is so peaceful. The beach is clean and Ron and Beryl (English) provide beds, complete with ice boxes to keep your water cool...perfect!
The village square is the centre of night life. Lots of local tavernas, a few quiet bars, and lots of people to watch!
All in all, this is a place where you just relax the minute you arrive.
This is peace personified!
