Irini Filoxenia Apartments Reviews
" My comments are solely based on my... "

My comments are solely based on my holiday and experience at this particular resort and if id have read someones experience like mine then i would have probably reconsidered staying at the Irini Filoxenia as far as accomodation goes. If you want air conditioning in your appartment book the one bedroomed rooms, the two bedroomed don't have this luxury and in July you do very much need it especially at night if you want a comfortable nights sleep and you dont find this out till you get there :( you may benefit from a second balcony in the 2 bedroom app'ments but the vile smell of drainage overlooking the rear of the app'ments is overwhelming and as the day becomes hotter so does the smell, not pleasent at all. The rooms had what appeared to be pipes sticking out of the floors in the bedrooms and holes where sockets looked to have once been. If you like a peacefull nights sleep invest in taking some earplugs, the greek owners on the bottom floor stayed up till early hours and aswell as the local dog/s barking also watch for them following you around in the hope you'll feed them, cicada's (noisy insects) which seemed to shut up by a particular time and the cockeral that was'nt sure when to crow! our Freezer part of the fridge didnt work, we had no plug in our bath to bathe, utensils to say it was self catering was very limited as were the mini markets, dont expect them to have the choice as in the UK, my advice take things you like in your case ESPECIALLY tea bags if you like your cups of tea. Apart from these things i experienced, it was a lovely place, cant grumble at the beachs, people (some a little ignorant, tends to be the older generation) Maggie the Rep, not a bad word to say about her, very picturesque place, VERY greek in July but we knew this before we went, thought i'd miss the internet while on holiday but there was even a internet cafe, learning a little of the greek lingo will get you far too. Personally if your more of an all inclusive holidayer go elsewhere...

Very nice apartments and Studios, can get a bit of road noise but not to excessive and pretty well postioned for shops, tavernas bars and the 2 beaches.
The transfer is a bit on the long side at 2hrs 30 mins but its worth it once you are there as you don't have lots of Brits in the resort so it as very greek feel to the place.
there's lots of restaurants, tavernas and bars to suit everyones taste, our favorite was To Mouragio in village square George the owner Nikitas and Dimitriou were fantastic and made dining a pleasure. maggie the Manos representive was excellent both professionally and socially a really nice place to visit.

I have stayed in these appartments & studos FIVE times & in Paralio Astros itself EIGHT times. This is a VERY Greek town with MANY tavernas serving LOVELY GREEK FOOD - if you want English food stay home of go to Benidorm or more commercialised resorts. The people are wonderful & friendly, I don't think I've met one person I didn't like in all my visits there.
Yes - car hire is a great idea so that you can explore - must-see Nauphlion, have visited on every holiday, but if you want a quiet relaxing holiday GO TO P. ASTROS!! (July/Aug. not so quiet as Athenians do know a good thing when they see it!)
I'm going back in Sept. '08 - otherwise the withdrawal symptoms will set in.

" Let’s be clear about this, Paralio... "

Let’s be clear about this, Paralio Astros is a Greek resort mainly for the Athenians who come down for the weekends and holidays. If you bear this in mind you will have a great time.
The Filoxena is a good clean basic hotel, the old rooms are very large with great balconys, and the new rooms are bright and clean with views of the castle. There is also a library of books to swop.
I have stayed here on three occasions and am booked in for 2008 that must tell you something! The owner Yanis does a great barbecue if you can persuade him. The Manos rep Al is a real 10/10 listen to her as knows all and is very passionate about the area.
I have visited Paralio Astros for 4 years now as I have relatives in the area and have stayed in other hotels and apartments and I have to say Filoxena is my favourite. As to the language problem I have never had any .There is some building work going on but not near to the Filoxena and Astra.
There are many bars, tavernas and restaurants on the seafront, most are very good. This is not a noisy resort; it is pretty laid back and is a great place to chill out. The beaches are long so you should have some privacy.

" The apartments are very spacious,... "
Submitted By: Mr P Gingell
The apartments are very spacious, clean and, if you get one at the back, have spectacular views of the mountains with some awesome sunsets.
The resort itself is very pleasant with some great little tavernas and bars and there are miles and miles of beaches so you can lose yourself if you want to or join the more lively beaches nearer to the town. If you are used to the standard 'English' Greek resorts then Paralio Astros will take a bit of getting used to as it a real Greek resort. Most evenings you will only come across a handful of foreign tourists which makes for a very authentic Greek experience. Despite what you may have heard you can get by perfectly well by speaking English and smiling.
There are plenty of buses to take you out and about and all the usual car hire places. Its a great place for adults, couples but probably not the best for younger families unless you have organised your car hire.
Absolutely not to be missed at any time of the year is Kalavrita, the awesome mountain resort (lots of skiing in the winter) which has a fantastic buzzy Alpine feel to it, cool in the summer and quite unlike anywhere else in Greece. The train journey from there to the North coast (all 22km of it) is quite simply spectacular and is listed as one of the top 10 rail journeys in the world - book yourself on the trip with your rep you will not be disappointed - the holiday was worth it for that alone.

" A good apartment with all the usual... "

A good apartment with all the usual basic facilities. My comments are more on the resort of Paralia Astros. If you don't want to hire a car then don't come here!
There are only really 2 tavernas that’s acceptable, many bars but with little or no English speaking people a relaxing drink can turn into a major stress.
During the week, this resort is more a ghost town, making meals and drinks in any of the bars a souless and uncomfortable experience. On a weekend the groups from Athens turn up making a little more atmosphere, but then you have screaming children running around all the time.
Another point to make you aware of is the masses of building work in the 'resort' you certainly don't get to see Greece at its best here.
Think long and hard before visiting Paralia Astros as this resort is certainly 'different'!

" We stayed at the Irini for two... "
Submitted By: Mrs S Hermansen
We stayed at the Irini for two glorious weeks in June. The large well kept apartment - two beds roomed with a full-size kitchen, two large balconies and mosquito nets at all three patio doors - was excellent.
Only a five minute stroll into the village with a pretty harbour and lots of tavernas to choose from.
The apartments are set in a lovely garden looking up to the medieval castle on the hillside at the front, and overlooking a small farm at the back, facing Astros and the mountain range.
The antics of the farmer’s dog brought much amusement to us during our stay. It thought it was a goat, wore a goat collar with bell, and led it's 'brothers' a merry dance all around the fields.
There are two long beaches at Paralia Astros, both just a gentle stroll from the apartments.
Even the journey to the resort, which we were a little concerned about beforehand, was an integral part of our holiday - glorious scenery as you traverse three mountain ranges. 'Al' our rep made everyone feel welcome from the minute we arrived.
You can catch the local bus direct to Athens, Astros, Argos (change here for Napoleon - not to be missed!) and Leonideon. You can also walk up to Astros through the olive groves, or take a taxi there for about three Euros.
We booked an overnight trip to Athens, the memory of which still brings pleasure, and Al arrived on her bike very early in the morning to make sure we got off safely. We also booked an excursion to Hydra and Spetses. We had to take a taxi to Tolon to catch the boat, but from July the boat actually picks up in Paralia Astros!
Unlike some Greek islands we have been to, this is not an English resort and is all the better for it. We never had any trouble making ourselves understood, but don't expect the menu boards to be written in English. A little sign language goes a very long way, and whatever you order will be delicious. A little spoken Greek will be applauded.
This was the first time we had stayed on the Greek mainland and we weren't too sure what to expect. It was marvellous and we wish we'd done it before. Everyone we met was kind and helpful, from the old man who insisted on giving us some lemons from his tree, to the taverna owners who insisted on telephoning for a taxi for us when we were concerned about missing the bus back from Leonideon.
We intend to return in July 2007 and, if we're lucky, see a play at the mind blowing Epidavros ancient theatre.
I have to mention Al again. We don't usually see the tour operator's rep on holiday apart from the first and last day. Al was the exception. She flitted here, there and everywhere on her bike - always with a welcoming smile, and always with time to ask how you were enjoying yourself and was there anything she could help with.
She was a fountain of knowledge and shared her enthusiasm for the area with everybody. We need more reps like Al, and as I know Paralia Astros is her favourite resort, hopefully we will see her again soon.

Lovely spacious apartment with modern facilities Local to beach and places to eat.
It should be made clear to perspective travellers that there is a separate charge for the use of the "Air Conditioning" unit? though! This is not included in your holiday costs. Plus there is no television either.
It can be a little noisy at times as it is situated on a main road.
