Lakeside luxury?

"Just returned from a week at the Grand Majestic. As usual we booked at short notice via our local travel agent. We wanted two full lake view rooms but given the time scale we settled for one plus a side lake view with a promise to upgrade if available. In the event it was not needed as the side room was as good as the full view room and our friends decided not to bother.

Having read one or two recent adverse reports on tripadvisor we were a bit concerned as to what we might find. However our concerns were unfounded. Our room although not over large was perfectly adequate, well decorated and spotlessly clean.

The bed was spacious and although firm, was comfortable. The only real disappointments were the shower room and the balcony. The shower room was well fitted but 'snug' to say the least. The shower was very small and if you are of rather more ample proportions you might find your elbows banging on the walls. In fairness there was lots of hot water which compensated for the lack of a bath. The shower room also lacked a proper shaving mirror and the room really needed a full length dress mirror.

The balcony was also a bit of a disappointment as it was very small, too small in fact too be of any use apart from drying my swimming cossie. Having looked at the building it was one of only two that size. Are we just unlucky, or was it the tour operator booking that made the difference?

On the plus side the hotel is well funished and well situated on the lake side in landscaped grounds. It is within ten minutes walk of the ferry terminal and the town centre with lots of restaurents of varying price easily accessible by foot.

The staff were very helpful, especially those manning the bar. Breakfasts were fair only, the cerials and fresh fruit being good but the hot buffet a bit 'samey', scrambled eggs, bacon and tomatoes every day. We only tried the dining room once and had an excellent if somewhat pricey meal. All other times we dined out ,this being no reflection on the hotel and merely the way we chose to holiday.

Although it is possible to find fault we had a super holiday and would have no hesitation in staying at the Grand Majestic again.Next time however we would try to fly to Milan rather than Bergamo as the 145 k. transfer is a real drag. Better still drive down in the Ferrari.

A jewel on Lake Maggiore

"Verbania/Pallanza is a perfect base to explore Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. I had stayed in Stresa before, and this is far superior! Easy walk to the ferry dock from this hotel, which is slightly outside the town in a residential area on the way up to Villa Taranto. The indoor pool is sublime, and the grass lawn for sunbathing is lovely. A tiny private island near shore has one house on it, and we enjoyed wondering who lived there. Our room was large and comfortable with gorgeous views. Parking can be a challenge, but we were allowed to use the staff parking lot which was great. The hotel puts on a lovely breakfast, but I would skip the overpriced and over-salted dinners in the restaurant. Borromean Islands are a delight to explore, also the less-known Hermitage of Saint Catherine, a little further away on the ferry route."

Long gone glory

"The Majestic in Verbania is outdated and not worth the price one is paying for. The rooms are relative small and are basically furnished. A twin bed, a very small TV set, 1 closet, a small bathroom with only a shower. This is true for both the refurbished rooms and the one which are not refurbished. Indeed is hat a stunning view on the lake, but that's about it. The pool is situated inside, which is not preferable. Attitude from the staff towards clients depends very much on the situation and with whom you are dealing. Like other large hotels in the environment of the Lago Maggiore this hotel must have had it's heydays in the 1950's en 60's but it has not kept up with time. For a 5 star hotel it is well below the standards of today.

Reading the other reviews on this site i can draw no other conclusion that especially people from Britain grade this hotel higher than people from the European continent and the Americas. Are British hotels that poor that they rate this hotel so high?

Simply stunning location

"We were very impressed by the location and setting of this hotel, it is simply stunning. On the banks of Lake Maggiore, and a short stroll into Verbania (no more than 3 minutes), the hotels grounds are a major draw. There are lawns stretching to the lakeside, and you can while away the afternoon lying on a sun lounger. There are plenty of trees for shade, and the loungers are spaced far apart, giving you plenty of privacy from other guests. We spent an afternoon relaxing and watching the local wildlife, such as squirrels and birds.

Our room was clean and nicely decorated, and although we did not have a lake view, it did not matter as with such beautiful grounds, we did not spend much time in the room.

The bathroom had only a shower and no bath. The room had a television and also a DVD player.

The hotel has free parking in spaces right outside the entrance on the roadside. The road is a quiet, one-way street.

Breakfast is served in a lovely light room overlooking the grounds and the lake, and was good value, with a fair selection of choice. There is also a restaurant and bar located on terraces overlooking the gardens and lake.

We would definitely return here, and are disappointed to have only just found it after several trips to the area!

"I stayed at the Grand Hotel Majestic in May for 5 nights. We booked Deluxe Lake View rooms. It was a bit more, but so worth it. Waking up every morning to the best view I have ever seen, was priceless. Just sitting out on the balcony overlooking the lake was so relaxing and stunning. Italian hotels always seem a bit bare in terms of furnishings - there were no frills in the rooms, they weren't luxurious, but this seems to be the case throughout Italy.

There is so much to do in this area of Italy. There is a ferry port about 10 mins walk away that runs throughout the day. You just buy a ticket approx 15 euros, and you can get on and off the ferry around the different islands. We visited old palaces, beautiful gardens & old villages. It was so beautiful on the ferry.

We hired a boat for the evening to take us from the hotel to a restaurant called Verbania on an island called Isola Bella. This was the highlight of the trip. We did have problems with food at the hotel, as there were 2 vegetarians in our party. We did speak to the manager about it, but found they didn't really care which was a bit disheartening. We went half board and got the same menu every day which had 3 options (none for vegetarians) - we found the menu very limited, and the food really wasn't good. Even breakfast was below average. It was a shame as the hotel is so beautiful, the food let it down, but certainly didn't ruin our stay. We ended up going out to eat, and was nice to try other restaurants. So do not go half board!

There is a terrace overlooking the lake, and was so wonderful sitting out there having a drink in the afternoon or evening.

It was a fabulous trip away, and we all really enjoyed it. I will always remember the beautiful scenery and would definitely reccommend this hotel, and really reccommend lake view rooms.

Amazing location

"I have just returned from the Grand Hotel Majestic having used it for our company's Annual Meeting. It is a really fantastic location and the staff bent over backwards to make our conference really efficient. All of our investors loved the hotel - it is very Italian. The rooms are clean but faily basic but everything else more than makes up for this. You open the large wooden shutters onto a beautiful lake. We went to one of the islands for dinner and returned by darkness, also by boat - a really fantastic evening."

Great Hotel, Amazing Location

"We spent four nights at the hotel and could not have been more pleased. The setting was lovely, overlooking the lake. The room was nicely furnished, with a comfy king size bed, modern bathroom and tub. Grounds were maginificent. Breakfast was excellent and served in a beautiful restaurant overlooking the lake. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was a short walk to town where there were many restaurants available. Would clearly stay here again."

A real treat, a fantastic location

"This was a bit of a one-off for us -- we would not normally stay at a so-called luxury hotel. But if it doesn't hurt too much to drop Euro 300 a night, we can definitely recommend this one. The biggest plus here is the lakeside location on Lago di Maggiore. Spectacular views if you take a lakeside room - we had a junior suite which also gave us a terrace to enjoy some of the sun. We could just sit on the terrace and lounge in the room all day! There are a couple of small towns nearby, Intra and Pallanza, with good restaurants and some exclusive shops, but you're done looking around these places in a day. The hotel reputedly has an excellent restaurant but we had blown our budget on the room and decided to go slumming in the nearby towns. The hotel staff was friendly and spoke English well. We had a minor problem with the bathtub at about 9 in the evening, and had a friendly repairman in our room fixing it up within 5 minutes. The room was tastefully decorated in what I'd call the classic Italian style without the kitsch you sometimes get in this type of place. Breakfast was in a glass-enclosed terrace and provided the usual mix of cereal, Italian rolls, pastries, fruit and even bacon and scrambled eggs. Naturally, great coffee. In summary, a fantastic location and good service at a handsome price. We enjoyed every minute of it!"
