Metropole Hotel Reviews

9 / 10
Jun 2007, Mr S Radion

An excellent hotel that has been recently refurbished. My wife and I were driving back from visiting friends and stopped in Llandrindod to have a coffee in the hotel. We were exhausted and enquired how much a room would be and the hotel were prepared to reduce their rate... more

Very Pleasent
Hotel has had parts refurbished ie bar/brasserie & leisure area and I must say to a high standard. We ate at the brasserie on Friday evening and all(5) had 10oz fillet steak which was superb and we felt reasonably priced. Breakfast was excellent with everything you could want from cereals to bacon & eggs. My friend and I used the gym, pool, jacuzzi & steam room on Saturday morning and had it all to ourselves! it was great, really nice facilities. We also had an aromatherapy back massage by Kylea and it was excellent and again very reasonable at £22 for 30mins. Rooms ,well ours was a bit on the small side but clean and had tea/coffee making facilities. Llandrindod itself is very quiet, no decent shops, about 3 pubs and the choice of indian or chinese to eat! but its okay if you like that sort of thing, bit too restricted for us though!Apparently Builth Wells is a bit livelier (wouldn't be difficult!). We enjoyed
Very nice place to stay
If you can get over the horrible green exterior, you get into a really nice hotel. Rooms are large- I had two double beds and a bathroom just for me! The spa is lovely (I recommend the massage) and the choice of two restaurants was very good. I would say the a la carte restaurant would appeal to the blue rinse brigade (sorry) and the bistro to a younger crowd. If you are inbetween I guess you could go either way! The staff were very helpful, and I wish all the hotels I stay in on buisness were as nice as this. I would recommend this as a base for exploring the beautiful countryside around Llandrindod Wells. EXCELLENT!
Delighted
I had the great pleasure of staying at this hotel on business just before Easter. The whole experience was most enjoyable and the quality of food and service certainly exceeded my expectations for such a large hotel which I now know to be privately owned and run by the fourth generation. We chose to eat in the Restaurant, both the food and service were of the highest standard. The swimming pool appeared to have been the subject of a recent upgrade, was spotlessly clean and a pleasure to use. Bedrooms were spacious with modern televisions and hsia. An altogether memorable stay. This is a hotel to which I would definately return with my family for a week-end break.
Well worth it
I just stayed at the Metropole over the weekend having booked it at the last minute with Laterooms. As I only paid £49 for a double room I did not expect much but must confess that I was pleasantly surprised. The room itself on the first floor was a bit on the small side overlooking some roofs but the hotel was quite welcoming, the staff was friendly and the food in the restaurant was excellent and quite reasonably priced. It was unfortunate that the Leisure Centre & Pool was closed due to refurbishment but as I only stayed one night this was not a problem. The town of Llandrindod Wells was however a bit of let down with all the splendor of a Victorian Spa town well in the past and the town in dire need of a face lift.
Really nice, quaint hotel
Overnighted at this hotel on our way through Wales. I know it's absurd to complain about lack of air conditioning considering we were there in a record heat wave, but it was pretty much torture. The Metropole is quite old, and our way to the room at the very top and back was convoluted. (Which just made it more fun, unless you're elderly or disabled, I guess.) Dinner was excellent, and the room of a good size and very clean. There was an outdoor pool, but since we didn't have bathing suits we avoided the sight of it like the plague. No problems at all.
Excellent Family Weekend
Needed a good quality hotel to celebrate my parent's 60th wedding anniversary - they're young at heart 80 somethings. Booked the £69 per night DB&B for 2 nights for 8 of us, with an upgrade for Mum & Dad to one of the tower rooms - well worth the £10 per night extra. Some of the standard rooms are on the small side, most rooms are non smoking, as are most of the public rooms. The 3 course dinner menu (normally £23.50) is limited to 5 or 6 choices for each course and includes coffee & Petit fours. Excellent value, well presented and cooked to perfection. Staff are attentive and genuinely happy to be of service - not many UK staff in evidence. Drinks not particularly expensive for this type of hotel and there is a good selection of wines at modest prices. If you're looking for a relaxing break in a hotel where you are considered a valued customer then this is for you. Llandrindod has a faded Victorian air about it and is in need of a lick of paint here & there - there's a large lake which would be ideal for boating, but for some reason all you can do is fish. Surrounding area is beautiful if you like peaceful scenery.
Old fashioned style
Stayed here for 2 days midweek on delegate package. It was good to stay somewhere with character, the rooms are large and airy, and the facilities - pool, gym, function room, dining room - are good. The food lets it down - basic, average quality and small portions, but the staff are friendly and helpful.
Excellent Hotel!
very good. We stayed there for 3 nights and they were all excellent. The staff are all polite and helpful and worked with extreme efficiency. The food was outstanding, quite probably the nicest food i have eaten ever. Our food also came without much delay a maximum of about 10 minutes between each course. TOTALLY RECOMMEND. The hotel was very clean and tidy and the facilities were excellent. Best hotel in all of mid wales. It seemed more 5* than 3*
Helpful and efficient
Having jointly managed and accompanied four group booking of 50+ persons at the Metropole, I can only say that staff there are always efficient and helpful, even at busy times which at the Metropole are most times. Rooms have always been clean and well-equipped and the public areas have benefitted from the refurbishment carried out in 2004. Meals have generally been good to excellent and reasonably priced, although breakfasts could do with improving. Overall it the best hotel of its grade for many tens of miles around.
