TIRED AND WEARY
Booked online due to need to be in St Andrews at very short notice and having stayed previously with my company my expectations were high. Sadly disappointed by laclustre atmosphere, staff seemed quite unsure of their role and managers who seemed to be lacking in every department. I was unable to have dinner due to other commitments but if the breakfast was anything to go by I didn't miss anything - its always a hit of a miss with most hotels and this time it was a miss. I notice they have invested heavily in a new function suite,... more
A major disappointment
We booked Rufflets via a late booking site and opted for the luxury room at half price (£99 per night). First impressions on entering the lobby could have been better as there was a faintly unpleasant smell that lingered with us until we got used to it. We were taken to our room on the first floor - the downstairs public areas were well presented, but the stairs and hallways were very 70's with carpet that had seen better days and flat panelled doors that were uninspiring in a "country house" hotel. The room itself was... more
Management response from StephenOwen

I was, as perhaps expected, disappointed to read this review, and we have clearly failed to deliver the expectations of this guest. Sometimes, things do not go well, and whilst there are background reasons as to the problems with hot water (or lack of it) on the day, do not want to make excuses, and the hotel has apologised for the issues. This year, as with every year, the hotel will be investing heavily in refurbishments, and the projects will include the matters raised. I can only hope that other potential guest will read other reviews posted, so as to get a fuller picture of how good we really are. I do also hope that the reviewer will return to experience the hotel more fully.

Best for the over 65s
We were pretty disappointed with this hotel. It's advertised as a 4/5 star place but is not up to the task as the little details are lacking and the place is way over-formal. We stayed here for the weekend and were put up in the Gatehouse and not in the main hotel building. The room was standard, nothing special, with a tiny bathroom with hardly any space to turn around. Also, as the gatehouse is close to the main road, there was traffic noise. We would advise against booking the gatehouse rooms. The bar area is odd - the decor is... more
A wonderful experience
Having stayed at Rufflets once before we were very excited to be returning to attend a party being held in the newly built function suite. As ever the we were greeted very warmly at the reception and shown to our room which was described as standard but was very plush indeed and immaculately clean. The hotel has a wonderful homely and welcoming feel to it and the new function suite is no exception. It is a fantastic addition to the hotel and the party was a great success. We had an outstanding 3 course meal which rivaled any restaurant... more
Small and perfectly formed
Having stayed at the old course in st andrews before we were looking for something different and Rufflets fully exceeded our expectations. After an exceptionally quick check in with the helpful staff we were escorted to our turret room, number 5. Inspite of reading all about the rooms before we arrived on opening the door we were absolutely delighted with what we saw. A large four poster bed, with rufus the bear, a separate seating area which was located in the turret and looked out onto the beautiful gardens, but the best was yet to... more
Service Second to none
We (3 bridesmaids) arrived on a Friday afternoon sans car. One of our party asked if it was possible to walk to St Andrews from the hotel. The man at reception, who we think was the manager, said he was going to the bank and offered us a lift, which we greatfully accepted. This was the first of many examples of fabulous service that we received during our short stay. Then the next morning, whilst at the hairdressers getting our hair done for the wedding, we received a phone call enquiring whether we would be checking out soon. Shock... more
