HORRIBLE! DO NOT STAY HERE!
My fiancee (at the time we weren't married) went to Cuba in June 2005. We were recent grads, so this was supposed to be a nice budget hotel......
This hotel is the worst I have ever seen. Run down, broken glass, wires, unhelpful staff, horrible amenities, etc. Toilets in the lobby are disguisting...flies flying around human feces or clogged. The beach is not kept up...full of litter and iron prongs that stick out from the sand in the middle of nowhere! We got food poisoning in this hotel....we were sick 5 out of the 7 days we were there...we were dying to go back to Canada/America! Flies were swarming around the meat in the buffet. They used the same left over meat day in and day out...we actually watched them dish out last night's meat onto the buffet table. Entertainment...none...location....pathetic. Nothing to do after 8pm or no place to have a decent meal. We befriended a local while vacationing, and he showed us a good time. He took us to Havana...which was ok...but filthy and dirty too! Another day we rented scooters and drove around. We stopped by the water on the highway to take some pictures and we were attacked by mosquitos. Stay away from Cuba...it's highly overrated and there is nothing nice to see there! Just a bunch of police cops on every corner (they are still communist), stray dogs running around, and people with sad, oppressed-looking faces.
Go stay at Dreams Cancun Resort in Mexico...the best resort ever! We went there for our honeymoon and it was fabulous!
We enjoyed the location - right...

We enjoyed the location - right in Varadero, next door to the market. The beach and the pool were beautiful and clean. The nightly entertainment by the pool was very good. The maids and the restaurant staff were excellent. Easy access to all transportation and excursions. Informative welcome meeting by Sunwing representative.
On the negative side - everything appeared old and run-down; the sofas and chairs in the lobby were dirty and falling apart; the sofa in the room also dirty; only one of the elevators worked and it was a bit shaky; the food was mediocre.
For the price we paid, it was a good deal. Just be prepared for the appearance.

Having injured the 10 hour flight the feeling in my legs was starting to return in the taxi ride to my hotel.
Under no illusions my wife and myself were enjoying our first views of Cuba. On first appearances Sunbeach Hotel seemed professional and inviting, but don't be deluded. Late budget deals like this are miss-sold. The accommodation, staff, facilities and food are very poor. Broken paving, ceilings and lifts are now just evidence of a hotel that has seen better days. Noisy rooms filled with diesel fumes ever day, noisy neighbours. Pool murky and dirty, beach full of litter.
Entertainment by the local entertainers could be seen in two places, once in the hotel then over the road in a more seedy bar across the road. Where further entertainment with exotic dancers can be found for few beers and a packet of cigarettes. This is about as good as it gets that both you and your children will receive.
If I could select an overall...

If I could select an overall rating of zero for this hotel then I would have done. We hated this hotel, it was run down, the food was disgusting, my husband and I were both ill and the pool was murky and dirty.
The rooms were run down, toilet did not work (we fixed it ourselves) and there was hardly ever any hot water but overall rooms were clean (but run down) thanks to the wonderful maids. Some of the other problems were the noise from other apartments and selfish guests talking loudly outside their rooms until 5am in the morning and the chicken shacks opposite our room. The toilets in the lobby were filthy and if they were blocked then they were just locked up and left.
Bare wires hung from the ceilings in corridors. The beach was nice but full of litter. The entertainment in the hotel pathetic. We would not recommend this hotel to our worst enemies.

Coming from UK the hotel was more like a two star in quality, but in a good location for the beach.
The food was very average and the rooms were rather run down although the maid service was good.
The pool was dirty and I would not recommend swimming in it although the beach being in close proximity helped.
Varadero itself was not as lively as expected, and if you like to eat out as we do you are rather limited in choice. The best places we ate were actually in Josone Park (Get a taxi and pay no more than $3 Pesos) and the Dupont Mansion (Part of a golf complex on the outskirts of town).
