My Wife & I stayed at the Regent Hotel Oban for a 3 night stay. We had requested a sea view room but we got a room overlooking a demolition site. The Hotel was not booked up throughout our stay, more in for the first night. A coach party was booked in for 1 night only. They... more

loved the wee pub, cellar bar
I called in on the off chance while driving through Oban and managed to book a room, sea view and breakfast for the great price of £25 a night. Clean, comfortable and friendly and certainly value for money. I loved the Cellar bar attatched to the hotel....friendly and full of characters. I would stay there again without a doubt
Our stay was okay
We stayed here for two nights at the end of August 2006. Our room number was 205. We were on a small, private tour, so I don't know what the cost of the room was. The location is quite good, near the center of town along the esplanade by the harbor. Good-sized reception lobby with a small bar in one corner. Very small elevator, which came in handy because our room was on the second floor and we had large, heavy suitcases (we don't travel light :-) ). Our room was fairly small, with a double bed (unlike our previous hotel in Kyleakin where we had twin beds). It was clean and there was no cigarette or musty smell. Nice high ceilings. The window was in an alcove with a view along the esplanade and some of the harbor. The bathroom was large with a window, tub/shower, and pedestal sink; heated towel bar; large squeeze bottles of soap at the sink and in the shower; no washcloths; no surfaces on which to put toiletries. Very small TV but no remote control (we never did ask about one since we didn't watch TV much). The TV picture was so-so; 4 channels available. There was a clock radio although the radio reception was lousy. Wireless internet access was available for a ridiculous fee: £3 for an hour, £5 for 2 hours, £17 for 24 hours (continuous). Sheesh! Breakfast (included) was decent enough. We didn't eat any other meals at the hotel. When we stayed here, the hotel was part of the Swallow Hotels chain. However, apparently it's changed hands since because it is no longer listed at the Swallow Hotels web site.
Noisy, smelly and needing alot of TLC!
Stayed at this hotel as we were attending a wedding there. Had 2 rooms as we had our children with us as well. Both rooms really needed some money spent on them - ours had damp patches on the ceiling and the bathroom suite was old and cracked! The whole place smelt of old stale fags (remember Scotland is no smoking now!) and drink. On the first night a group of teenagers were running about at about 1pm in the morning slamming doors and waking us up. We complained in the morning but there was no0one interested. Having said that the breakfasts were fine and the food at the wedding reception was excellent, as was the service! I know this hotel has been having problems and i hope that the mangement can improve things - they certainly seems to be trying, Overall though i would chose to stay there again.
Something missing
There's something missing at the Regent, the staff were trying hard to please, but the place just missed the mark. The room was clean and the bed comfortable, but obviously it needs some input on the detail. The curtains were just thin cotton, with no linings, so the sun woke us up very early, we had great difficulty switching off the shower, and there was an overflow running all the time somewhere outside . However the worst was the breakfast:, the waitress brought the tea, but no milk, my husband eventually fetched some in a glass from the cereals bart, and we asked for a jug, it never arrived. We were given a rack of toast at the beginning of the meal which was steamed and cold by the time we wanted it ( why do they persist in doing this, how many people eat their toast first!) The Scots should know how to make porridge, but it was a grey watery mess, and I sent it back, I asked for crispy bacon and scrambled eggs which arrived on a luke warm plate, the eggs were stone cold and the bacon far from crispy. My breakfast consisted then of oatcakes and spreads, and a carton of yogurt. The menu was extensive, but maybe less choice, but well presented and cooked would be better. There was a coach tour in which may explain some delays, but they should be able to cope. It's shame really as it's in a lovely position with superb views.
Wouldn't stay there again.
when we arrived at our room, we discovered that we couldn't fully open the door because the bed was in the way -- the room was THAT small. Dinner was included in our rate, which was unfourtunate because the set menu items are quite awful...undercooked and generally poor quality. However, I ordered one item off the a la carte menu, and it was delicious (but it costs extra). The lift is very tiny (it just barely fit two people and one suitcase) and it is unreliable (2 people we talked to said it broke down on them). The TV didn't work. The windows didn't open and there was a strong cigarette smell.
Please please please avoid (I warned you!)
Just to be clear Im not a generally a fussy person, function is always more important than image to me, but we booked this room at the last minute to attend my niece's christening in Oban, I've visited many hotels and this was by far the worst most uncared for accomodation I've been to. Everything in the room looked like 70s/80s furniture acquired from a car boot sale, the scorched panel heater looked very unsafe, there was an iron shaped burn in the floor. We had to laugh about it really, but the mattress was out of shape and obviously turned round so our legs were sloping down. The whole experience made me feel like the owner was very very tight fisted, it wouldnt have cost much to revamp the room. The bathroom was cleanish but you could tell that it had not been renovated since the 80's. The shower unit could only be adjusted for temperature but not pressure. Next morning we waited for 10 minutes before anyone asked us what we wanted for breakfast so the service was average overall but I dont blame the staff for feeling unmotivated in a place like that. Its a privatly owned B&B for me if I visit Oban again.
DO NOT STAY HERE!!!
The WORST night's sleep I have ever had in a hotel. The Radio from the hotel lobby kept us up till 4.00 am in the morning, when the night porter eventually decided that our numerous complaints were enough and turned it off. We were then woken at 6.30 when the day-shift turned the thing back on!!! My girlfiend was in tears when we left. If I had not paid up front, I would not have paid at all. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Great Location, disappointed in the room
Room was clean enough but the beds were very uncomfortable and the bath was in need of re-enamelling or replacement. On a plus point the heated towel rail was a nice touch. The hotel was close to all town centre amenities. Staff were pleasant and helpful.
lovely view
10 members of our family stayed here for 2 nights, staff seemed very overworked, rooms clean and adequate if small - portions of dinner could have been bigger, and presentation of meals was non existent, food just thrown on plates. Saying that, food was good, if there had been more of it!! An enjoyable family holiday just the same!
Great Hotel
Stayed there on Valentines weekend. Hotel Situated right on the sea front, great for all amenities. Hotel featues lift, restaurant bar's and lounge all very tastefully decorated, rooms lovely and warm with all you would expect en-suite, tea/coffee and colour television. Staff very helpull and friendly. Would definetly recomend this hotel to anyone, just wish we had stayed longer!
