Never seen windows so filthy. Even the wind and rain couldn't wash this off. Oban is out there somewhere.

This has not been refurbished, merely slapped a bit of paint around, our room was scruffy. The bed was the most uncomfortable ever, the room thermostat did not work, there were screaming kids outside our window till the early hours, and then other guests ran riot throughout... more

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Rooms were comfortable and warm, some of the windows had secondary glazing. The beds were very comfortable but huge. Being in the centre of everything one would have expected quite a lot of noise but it was quiet and 5 nights of beautiful sleep were had. Reception staff were very courteous and helpful as were the bar staff and a very comfortable bar it is. Breakfast was a little chaotic if one left it until the last minute but if you got down around eight am then it was perfect. We only had one meal in the hotel restaurant as we like to get out and about for our grub and we found it to be reasonable (especially when you take into consideration the 25% off vouchers they let you have) Although the Hotel has no parking facilities you park in the Station car park just 50 yards away for three pound a day. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely go back again.
mis-leading room rates
Don't pay more than £50 per couple, and only stay here if you have no other options. The lift was out of service, the breakfast was of the poorest cheapest budget quailty the cardboard like sauages and bacon were simply awful. May i suggest they upgrade to tesco value food as supermarket is just round the corner from the hotel. Also if you don't book b&b they try to charge about £14 per head! They do give you a teaspoon of Haggis, which must give it "scottish breakfast" status. You can park in the pay and display outside the hotel for £1.00 per hour up until 6pm but you can overpay and it will run on until the next morning which will save you rushing out before breakfast to put a ticket on. Our room was dated albeit large, the bed was uncomfortable. The shower was an experience to say the least. There is a good fish restaurant on the harbour called Eesk where I tried the "catch of the day"! A tasty fish called talbot, and my girlfriend had the biggest and best langoustines that she had ever tasted. So in my opinion, go to oban, try the real ales in the pubs, try the restaurants, but do try to avoid The Oban Caledonian Hotel.
Possibly the worst ever stay
The receptionist on duty when we arrived was very cold and unwelcoming, but the bar staff were great and the night receptionist friendly. Our room was too hot - the themostat was broken. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. The view was lovely - across the bay, but the room was noisy with passing traffic and kids hanging around at night. The restaurant staff where very unprofessional everything seemed such an effort. One in particular was extremely unwelcoming they almost threw our food at us. One waiter even brought the petit four - scottish tablet , to our table in his hands and just put it on the table with not even on a plate or in a wrapper. Food was edible, no more than that. We finally checked out early after having no sleep when some other residents decided to party in the corridors then onto their room above us between 3am and 4:30am after being challenged by others trying to sleep. This hotel has so much potential, a good setting, nice decor, but the things above really let it down. We didn't even bother complaining, as no one seemed to care about the guests.
Horrendous!!!
Probably one of the worst hotels I've ever had the misfortune to stay in. Supposed to be a four star hotel - wouldn't even give it two stars. Stayed for one night with my wife. Moved rooms 3 times - all filthy and looked as though they were last upgraded in the 1970's. Mattresses on beds completely done, carpets threadbare, wallpaper peeling off walls, curtains falling to bits and windows filthy. You've probably got the picture by now! Feel sorry for the staff - they must have to put up with a hell of a lot of complaints. Hotel needs gutted from top to bottom and completely refurbished. Shame it is in such a poor state of repair - it is in a great location with fantastic views.
Take earplugs and salad dressing
Pretty good large family room but shared it with the nightlfe of Oban as very noisy all night. Some staff training required; poor food in restaurant served with an argument with the young waiter who insisted a dry salad had a dressing when it patently did not. We dont like being tutted at and we know what salad dresing looks like, especially if it costs nearly £10. As with most of Scotland, outside tables the preserve of smokers. No car park and no allowance for paying for parking.
Great location
Just happened upon the Caledonian whilst on a mini tour of this area and was offered a harbour view room on the first floor at what we thought was a very reasonable price. (Two doubles at £110 each including breakfast). The only downside was there is no car park and Oban for parking is a nightmare. Our room was great. It had old, solid, mahogony furniture all in very good condition. The bathroom was fine, very clean with nice towels etc. The view was of the million dollar variety. The bar / tea lounge at the front of the hotel was ok although packed with very very old people when we were there. We think it's probably were the more mature people go for afternoon tea etc. which is a recommendation of sorts. Breakfast which was served in the rather austere restaurant was substantial and of high quality. Oban is a great little town with lots of bars and restaurants to suit everybody. We highly recommend "Coast" which is just along from the distilliery. Altogether a perfectly satisfactory hotel with very friendly staff. A special commendation for receptionist Kate who was very helpful with pub and restaurant advice.
Ok but in need of someone with taste to redecorate...
A grand old dame in a wonderful town with a great location, but unfortunately the hotel is in need of some 'tasteful' redecoration as its a little 'tired'. The dining room looks like it came out of 1990 and is completely out of character with the grand old dame. Breakfast ok - nothing of special mention. The downstairs bar/lounge appears to have 3 periods of design in one room! Wi-Fi available - for a charge, but it only works near reception - not in your room. Attentive staff on reception who were exceptionally helpful. Beware - the hotel has no car-parking, but we were able to get one in the street right out front, which is probably ok in non tourism season, bute likely a challenge in busy times!
I liked it!
I really enjoyed this hotel. It had an excellent location and the staff were really friendly. The room was comfortable and the harbour view was nice. I didn't enjoy the breakfast much... they charge for it which seems to be a bit odd in scotland. Most places include breakfast.
Avoid Room 117 or any at back of hotel or better still, the hotel!
We origionally booked for three nights. We fled after just one. The reception and bar areas are clean and modern. The staires and coridors also modern. We asked for a quiet room and were told none are quiet!! As it is a listed builing we were informed that they cannot have double glazing installed!! We asked for the best quiet room they had and were given room 117 which is at the back of hotel right onto the main high street along with constant traffic noise. The bed was so lumpy that the springs dig into your ribs! The weak excuse for a curtain is a blind that lets the lights from 1) The street light directly facing the room, 2) The shops facing and 3) The hotels own outside lights. Which makes the room so bright you think you havent turned the lights off!!! We were awoken at 1am to the sound of some localls arguing in the street beneth our room. First guys shouting then girls/women screaming. Then came the sound of cars racing down the high street. This went on for three hours!! The cost of this excuse for a hotel was £125 per night. I intend to wriht to the Folio Hotels MD for a refund!
Very Impressed Attentive staff
Well Well Well, It was not what i expected. I was delighted to be met with a happy smiling face pleasant surroundings and fantastic scenery. Our bags were taken to our rooms for us. We booked two ocean view rooms and they were perfect. They were clean bright and airy. Best of all the best had crisp white clean fresh sheets. . The staff were very attentive to my two young children and nothing was a bother they cooked special foods that we knew they would eat which were not on the menu and brought tea and coffee to our room free!! Excellent Breakfast Yumm.. Everything one could ask for. The Bistro where we had lunch was also great and the presentation was fabulous big portions also. We will certainly return to my now favourite hotel on the west of Scotland.
