We have just returned on sunday 22nd june, having spent 2wks at this marvellous hotel.WE flew premium with First choice which in my opinion was a waste of money.check in at hotel was ok.only gripe was once you got your keys porter took bags and pointed 'Trinidad building over there'we found our room,it was on the 3rd floor.the rooms are spotless, cleaned every day.our maid lou was lovely.always happy to help if you had a problem.we left little gifts for her every-other day and she always knocked to thank us.pool bar 10/10 the pool was cleaned daily, the staff here are nice, polite.especially Lazaro and Randy.Food 10/10 there was always something to eat from the Buffet restaurant, some was cook fresh for you if you didn't want what was on platter.wide variety and all hot.Cuban rest worth a visit.we never tried the mexican or italian.entertainment staff are brilliant the shows they put on are very good.they work hard all day in soaring temperatures and always smiling.all-in-all you could not fault this hotel or location, which is right on the beach.it like paradise.we def be going again.

Having not been on an 'all inclusive' holiday before I wasnt sure what to expect and so went with an open mind. I have to say that the overall impression was somewhat disappointing.
Firstly the hotel. The main areas are pleasant although could do with air conditioning. The bars were well laid out albeit there was a somewhat unpleasant smell during the 2 weeks by the main hotel lobby bar. The hotel had a main restaurant which whilst resembling a school canteen was light and airy and there were also a few a la carte bars that we went to. The food at the main canteen was ok without being spectacular but fine for the money. The breakfasts were very good with freshly made omelletes etc. The food at the a la carte was not great. Whilst no food expert I know what a decent mexican and italian should taste like and regrettably this appeared to be a misguided Cuban interpretation of these foods. The main problem when going to these restaurants however was actually booking into them in the first place. Twice during the holiday we booked into them only to be told on the door that they had no trace of the booking. We were not the only ones
There is clearly a communication problem here.
The bedrooms were very tired and needed an overhaul especially the bathroom. The maids did a sterling job of trying to keep the rooms clean but had an uphill battle due to the age of the fittings etc.
The biggest surprise for us was the people staying there. Maybe we should not have been surprised as the holiday was cheap but the pool area appeared to be surrounded by mainly tattoo clad English wearing football shirts. At times it resembled a Benidorm esq scene. Unfortunately a lot of the holiday makers also appeared to be unable to enjoy themselves without having entertainment laid on during the day hence the rather annoying loud pool bingo which blasted out on an afternoon. Hardly conducive to a restfull time. If you are going then head to the beach for a bit of peace and quiet.
As for Thomas Cook I was most unimpressed. We had a massive delay on the way out and a similar one on the way home. When we asked the rep about it he didnt seem bothered and his only concern appeared to be that he got a good mark on the questionnaire on the way home. It was very much a case of 'its somewhat else's fault'.
In all, a half decent hotel that is in need of modernisation. Dont be fooled in thinking you are in Cuba though. Having visited Cuba on numerous occasions in the past this is not Cuba (shamefully the locals are not even allowed near the hotel). Even such things as the local cocktails were poor imitations of what they should have been (I have had better mojitos in Norwich!!)
The country has so much more to offer in terms of entertainment, music and people. It seems a shame that so many people travel so far to sit by a pool and not sample the real Cuba when I guess you could do the same thing in the South of Spain. Whilst this is not the hotel's fault it is more of an observation on my part.

I went here last year after spending a week with my girlfriend who threatened me to take her away or there would’ve been trouble. Thank fully, we had a brilliant time. The weather, beach and staff were simply delightful and I would definitely go again.
Our relationship was hanging by a thread and now we are very much back in love with each other. A big thank you to everyone who made our week the most amazing adventure we have ever encountered. The nights of passion and loving glimpses across the beautiful sandy shores really stole our hearts.
I now sleep quietly without any grief from the girlfriend and we will use this experience as a way to move forward individually and as one.

The best features are the beach, the staff, the drinks, the food, the gardens and the shows. The worst feature are the dining areas - there is hardly any outdoor seating and none at all at the beach bar/grill. The main buffet restaurant resembles a cafeteria or student refectory with tables in uniform lines and is uniquely depressing. Similarly the beach grill is uniformly dark brown and depressing and indoor. The most attractive is the new Italian in the pool bar which is bright and spacious and we found the food there to be the best - even if they can forget the lobster! Generally the food quality is good with the charcuterie superb and the seafood usually excellent - although they made a mess of a baby octopus salad! The seafood tends to make a few appearances , individual items being recycled as zarzuela, seafood soup and paella. The beach grill rotisserie chicken was always good though you had to ask for the best cuts and the grilled fish - except the tilapia - was good. There were plenty of salad ingredients available though no made-up dressing though oil & vinegars were available separately. Plenty of pickles, olives, capers but no anchovies - herbs were only apparent in the Italian , though in jars on the countertop rather than in the cooking. There was always a large plate of crevettes but these were often merely defrosted and therefore watery. In all the restaurants the desserts were excellent (the hazelnut ice cream was great) and the fruit was generally good except the peponi melon which was dry
Of the a la carte restaurants we found the Mexican a waste of space - we termed it "the morgue" as there was no atmosphere and the food was totally bland. In the Cuban the group 4x4 enlivened it a bit , the crab claws were fine , the fish dishes better than the meat as usual. The Italian was far the best - the antipasti were sensational and possibly the only dishes you'd be happy to pay for in a restaurant - although one of the fish dishes was very bland - but at least you could add your own herbs! The wine served in the restaurants was basic Spanish but not at all bad for AI and Cava was served in a couple of bars and Kir Royale available in addition to the usual coktails and spirits.
The guests were mainly Canadian with English and Argentinians. The Canadians are hilarous as they always carry vaccuum flasks for drinks - even when out in the evening- and these appear to hold at least two pints and seem to be welded to their wrists. Also they don't dress for dinner - and some British wore football strips - although it's supposed to be long trousers in the a la cartes.
Most clients seem to enjoy the excursions and found them good value for money. We took the "Colourful Cuba" and the drive-yourself speedboats - both were great fun and good value for money. We also took the flying boat from the beach and the parapenting pilot - both good fun and exciting. We went a few times on the train to Playa Pilar - supposedly the best beach on Cuba and formerly a three hour ferryboat ride from the mainland. The beach is wonderful, there's a lobster shack (great value) and a boat to the next island Cayo Media Luna which has a good reef for snorkelling. Note this is where the catamran trip goes. The Bahamas are less than 70 miles north of here and it shows.
In sum - the hotel is good value for money. If I had school-age children I'd think much of the hotel's space is underused - there is no grass or sand football pitch even though there's bags of room and one pool table and one table tennis table is surely too little. Note also that the pool is uniformly less than 1.5m deep and much of it is shallower than that. The animation team are basically dancers - and good dancers -and the daytime activities are fairly perfunctory. The Cuban Party and auction is fun and the evening shows are often superb - don't miss the "black" one. The service everywhere is on the top side of good and we found the reception invariably helpful especially the reservation lady who fitted us in at the Italian most evenings without demur.
There is little to do on the cayos other than in resort - there is a bowling centre between the Iberostar and the Melia and another lobster shack on the beach in front of it. Birdwatchers , however, will find it a paradise. We watched a bee hummingbird from our balcony, pelicans fly over the beach, egrets and ibises are common on the way to Playa Pilar, turkey buzzards circle relentlessly and Cuban blackbirds sing all day
Finally it's definitely worth booking the VIP lounge at Cayo Coco airport.

Just come back from cuba and I have to say it was great! The weather wasnt at its best all the time but I still really enjoyed it.
The hotel was loverly really nice and clean. All of the staff were really really nice n really helpful.
The entertainment staff work really hard and put a good show on at night.
In the day it was nice to just relax but a few of my group did get a little bored as they wanted to play some more beach games, as we have at other hotels, although it was still enjoyable.
The food was out of this world, the tastes were just amazing, in the afternoon there wasnt alot to choose from as it was all the same the whole 2 weeks but it was still tasty.
The only bad point i cound think of about the hotel was the cudan resterant as it was truly awful I havent tasted anthing so bad before. But the mexican and the normal one made up for it.
Ive rated 9/10 because of the cuban and also because we was delayed for quite a while not that, that was the hotels fault. But my advice to anyone if you are flying with thomas cook go for the vip lounge on the way back as it was only 20 pasos each and you got your drinks and some food free whilst at the airport and so ive been told thomas cook are prone to delays but this is the first time ive flown with them so I dont know, but the vip was definateloy worth it!

To be honest, the resort is very friendly and the staff likes tips... it is custom there, but you can be sure that you will tip them too cos they are actually very nice.
only few comments:
First at all, Thomas Cook, o my o my, never saw a company that give so little for so much, no value for money and above all... no customer care indeed. (too many to mention, one for all: we wanted to upgrade on premium seats, if you can, do it, it is worth it; but we were unable to reach their call centre, in one occasion even been on hold for more than 2 hours without resoults, dont know how many emails we sent and we only got one reply saying that for the upgrade we had to ask directly at airport, we decided to spend some more money and reserve our seats online, 60 pounds to seat together with my wife!!!
At airport in Manchester, no premium seats were available to us, even if when in the plane few rows were empty.
On the way back, same story, no room on premium (please note that we were more than happy to pay and we said this in many occasions) and worst at all, we even didnt get the seats we paid for and we got right at the back of then plane where actually you cant move the back of the seat to get more confortable, we pointed this to the cabin crew but they werent listening, only one of them to be honest, comped us with some wine and water and an upgrade to watch few movies.
Lets go back to the resort, it is meant to be a 4* and for the country it is located, it is a 4*.
It is clean, the food, well, its different, nice, many choices but always the same ingredients, chicken, pizza, pork and beef, not choices at all if you are vegetarian, my suggestion: try different things on different days or after few days you will actually get bored of the food.
Omelettes, eggs, plenty of drinks and can be very busy at opening time, better go after 30-45 minutes they started to serve.
The rooms, very clean, make sure to leave 1 or 2 pesos on the pillow before you leave your room, in this way, you wll receive that extra touch from the person in charge of cleaning it.
Be carefull, the company rep, will do anything to sell you their trips, even lie!!! if you stay at this hotel, please note that it will take some time before you actually reach the destination.
Do not go for the Florencia tour, it takes 3 and 1/2 hours before you actually reach the lunch place, a small island in some sort of artificial lake. After, they will or they should take you to visit a cigar factory on a truck, but the truck will be broken (some other guets before us on different days had some result, my suggestion, spend the first day of your holiday, talking to people that have been there for a week or 2, ask them about trips and after book it) and they will detour to somewhere else. Note that after they pick you up at the resorts, they will go around to pick up other guets in other hotels, so, easily you can spend up to 1 and 1/2 hour picking other people up. in conclusion, an excursion that last almost 8 hours, 6, 6 hours and 1/2 will be spent on a bus, and roads are not very confertable over there.
It is worth go for a day fishing trip, even half day, if weather is good, also the catamaran is another way to spend the day and not far from hotel there is the aquatic centre where you can spend few hours on speeding boats, swimming and have a bit of fun, if you go, bring an underwater camera.
Cayo coco and guillermo are far from the mainland, so, if you should decide to go for a day out, take into consideration that good part of the journey will be on a bus.
We went only for a week, just go back few hours ago (31/03/08), not long enough to really enjoy a holiday expecially so far away but we had a nice time even if we werent so lucky with the weather, bit of rain and lots of wind.
The mexican restaurant is very nice, make sure to book it as soon as you can, also the cuban restaurant (both on the resort) is almost the same food you find at main buffet every day or night.
The animation people are very good, they spend all day, every day, trying to make you happy and during the day, they will arrange many activities and the night they always come up with a different show.
In the beach there are 2 activity centres, go and have some fun in the water.
Mosquitos, mainly in the room, better off with one of those little tablets you plug on the electricity on the wall that any other creams and spray.
Use plenty of solar protection cream, even if cloudy, the sun will strike.
When changing into cuban pesos, (pound at 1.73 at hotel reception, 1.76 at bank) a little tip, go to the bank. there is always a queue, you will find some people that are coming back home and they are happy (to avoid queue and show passport and reciept from previous exchange) to exchange a 2 pesos to the pound.
Definily worth pay for the VIP room on the way back, good service, drinks and some food, but above all, air con, and priority boarding if you shouldnt have the premium seats.
Will i ever go back to this place? I dont know! --- back to Cuba? yes definetely!! - Will i ever use Thomas Cook again? Never!!!!! first and last time.
Please note, I have complained to Thomas Cook as well, sent them the Customer survay and a complaint email before writing this review.
And to add something more, one of our luggages arrived broken, Thomas Cook`s answer at Luggage office Airport in Manchester? We are not responsible for it, make claim to your own insurance!!!! Now, this is what i call good customer service :)) (not really).
I will upload some picyures soon.
Bye for now

I have been to Iberostar hotels before which is why I booked this hotel for myself, my partner and my young son but I was slightly disapointed. The hotel lobby and grounds are nice but the room was not as clean as it should be, it was old and needed updating. i found the amount of squashed mosquitos on the walls and ceiling fascinating! I was shocked that the hotel has been refurbished recently, It shouldnt be sold in this way because the rooms certainly havent been. I requested a cotbed for my 18 month old before we went and had to ask twice before they brought it to the room, very late at night. Even then it was totally unsuitable for a child that can stand up as they cannot be lowered and my son would have fallen straight out and cracked his head open on the tiled floor. I complained and after a very rude member of reception staff had finished moaning about me to other staff i was assured we'd be brought a new cotbed. That never happened and my son ended up sleeping in bed with us for the rest of the holiday. we made friends with another young family with a daughter the same age as my son and they had exactly the same problem and ended up with their daughter in their bed. most of the staff are lovely but not too helpful with general enquiries and some make it quite clear they expect tips or clothing from you. there is a large range of food but it is more or less the same every day and being a vegetarian i really struggled. even my partner who eats anything was bored of the food after 2 weeks. however the puddings are fantastic! the pool was nice although a little crowded and the beach was lovely minus the sand fleas as there are plenty.
i would not go back to this hotel unfortunately and would certainly not recomend it to families with young children because of the sleeping situation, the amount of steps everywhere ie the lobby make is pretty dangerous for little ones and there is nowhere to take a little stroll (if you want to get them to sleep!)

Having spent 14 days at this resort, it was fantastic. I wasn't sure what to expect having read a few reviews but I would certainly go back. The hotel & its facilities were very clean. The staff were very friendly and the food was acceptable.
You can spend as little or as much as you want. Not a lot to spend your money on at the hotel, few shops, few stalls and tips for the staff. There is a bank on the resort too. Or you could go on trips and I certainly would recommend the overnight Havana trip. I wouldn't go on the Salsa night again though.
You can do as much or as little as you want too. There are tennis courts, volleyball, table tennis, pool table, small gym. The staff provide entertainment during the day if you wish to take part - aqua aerobics, volleyball tournaments (beach or pool), bingo, step aerobics etc. There is wind surfing, pedloes, canoes etc too.
I went for pure relaxation and that is what I got. The beach is gorgeous and we had lovely weather.

Please be warned - we were here for Christmas and New Year and were bitten to death by something!! We had to rush our daughter to the hotel doctor as she had a reaction to the bites and her leg was very swollen and painful.
Doctor told us they were mosquitoes, but we didn't actually see any - they looked like little thunder flies that we have here but boy do they bite, and we used tropical insect repellent which didn't seem to bother them. Everyone was being bitten on the flight back home - even the cabin crew, so I would be extra careful if you are taking children with you - not a nice experience.
The hotel rooms are quite tired. We had a few problems with the fridge not working and the door falling off the wardrobe. However, the maid was wonderful and kept the room spotlessly clean and made some lovely animals out of the towels.
Food - not that bad, just cold most of the time and quite limited in choice I felt. The chefs are very proud of their cooking though and breakfast was pretty good. The Mexican is good the Cuban is awful; I can honestly say the worst meal I have ever had in my life.
Staff - they are wonderfully friendly, however, they do expect tips, and we seemed to spend an awful lot of money on them.
Beach - beautiful. There is some seaweed but tractors clear it every morning. Beach is quite narrow and busy so you need to get there early for a sunbed and good spot with shade as it can be very hot. We didn't have any bother with beach sellers.
Entertainment - not great. And there isn't anywhere else to go apart from the hotel as you are quite isolated.
Pool - the beginning of our holiday was great; we had no problems finding a nice spot in the shade by the pool. However, by week two, we had awful people putting towels out on chairs and then disappearing for hours to the beach and then coming back to the pool in the afternoon. I think that this should be addressed by the staff as it's very unfair and frustrating.
To be fair we could have been anywhere in the Caribbean, we didn't get to see Cuba as we didn't leave the complex. I don't think we would go back to this hotel as it was very quiet and by day 10 we were bored and ready to come home.

After arriving at the hotel on 5th November (there were 4 in our group) we checked in, got our room numbers and were told that our rooms will not be ready for another 10 minutes. That was fine so we decided to have a drink at the bar, 30 minutes went by and decided to go to our rooms and freshen up and to get the bell boys get our bags.
As we were getting near our apartment we could hear sawing and drilling and workmen walking about. When we got there the whole block was covered in sawdust and rubble. Got to our rooms and it was the same - new mattresses on bed covered in dust, floor dirty and as for the bathroom I wouldn't even wash my feet in it. No water - it was a complete and disgusting shambles. No wardrobes doors, the safe on the floor with a big hole in the wall. Bearing in mind that before we left England First Choice did tell us that the renovations were all going to be finished when we got there, but it was not the case!
The swimming pool (volley ball pool) was empty, round the swimming pool the tiles were all up causing health hazard. Plus the hotel has got 318 rooms I think and only 138 rooms were opened, so the hotel wasn't actual opened in all capacity.
Absolute shambles after travelling all that way. We all complained to our rep and he said that there was nothing he could do until the next morning. So we saw him the next morning and there were 12 couples who all said that we are not staying here for 2 weeks (Including us); after discussions all 12 couples were moved to another hotel 10 minutes down the road, which was 100% much better and the rooms were much cleaner and bigger with its own dressing room.

Had a good relaxing holiday the weather was very hot and humid only rained once during the day and only for about an hour.
The room was very clean and the maid changed towels and sheets everyday. We tipped her halfway through our stay as well as the end and had no complaints.
The food was good with plenty of choice, the main restaurant was help yourself as much as you like. The Cuban and the Mexican had a decent choice and good service too.
The beach was lovely but a few people liked to play the towel game with sun beds.
The entertainment staff work very hard and as with all the staff they get little pay.

In general, I find this hotel to be ok, but not fantastic.
The good things:
-the buffet was fresh, a lot of variety of seafood and fish and also vegetarian plates
-the beach was amazing
-the cleaning of the room was good and in overall the personnel was good
-I did an excursion to see the corals (caraux in French) that was fantastic. It cost 75 pesos per person.
Things that need improvement:
- I had 2 bikinis that were stolen on the terraces, and the guest service did not do anything about it.
- The Cuban restaurant was really bad
- We were a group of 3 rooms. Some of the room did had hot water for a couple of days and hot water was cut without any advertisement during our trip
- Rooms smelt the humidity.

I can honestly say this is the worst holiday and worst hotel we have ever visited. There was myself, husband and 10 year old son and we all hated it so much we wanted to come home by the end of the first week. The hotel was very dirty and damp - we changed rooms four times in the two weeks we were there. It is the first holiday we have ever been on that we have found it necessary to complain to the management and holiday rep. Not that it made any difference.
The food was awful - the same every day and very, very salty. My son lived on bags of crisps from the shop for the first 3 days of the holiday and he will eat anything. You knew what would be for breakfast and sometimes lunch as it was the left overs from the night before. Keep away from the beach restaurant as nothing is covered over and flies are all over the food.
Entertainment staff could not be bothered with any activities through the day. Nothing was on for the first week, although by the second week of our holidays some very official looking people turned up and all of a sudden daytime activities were on and even food got a little bit better.
My son had to visit the on site doctor three times during our stay as he stood on some glass/tile in the pool and had to have it removed and then got a ear infection. Cost us a fortune.
The waiting staff and cleaners etc only wanted money from you and tried selling cigars etc. Money was taken from our room. The entertainment staff come night time only wanted to hang around the bar after their performance so you could supply them with alcohol.
I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy. It was two weeks of hell and has put me off visiting Cuba ever again. It was a holiday we were most looking forward to and was a nightmare from start to finish.

Well from reading others reviews before I went I was a bit sceptical as to whether it would be ok.... but it was FANTASTIC! I can see how some people may complain about a few things yet to be honest none of the things bothered me at all.
We went as a family of 4, and I think this hotel would fair equally as good for anyone, family or couple.
Food: from reading others’ reviews they seem to have a problem with the food. I would probably say it was the thing you could complain about the most but you really don't have to be picky. The selection although nearly the same each day, proved so large it didn't really matter as you had enough combinations to last 2 weeks.
Rooms: we had no problems... cleanliness was brilliant, the cleaners work so hard. We had no problems with hot water or damp. I agree with some bins at the end not being cleaned out but they’re nowhere near your room, nothing to worry about.
Entertainment: well best advice..... get involved straight away. We didn't until the second week which is my biggest regret. They do appear to be lazy when you don't know them but when they start to recognise you, you become very friendly. The evening entertainment was amazing... some of their shows are like broadway musicals and stay for the disco afterwards it’s worth it, you get to know them more as well that way.
Staff: they are all very friendly, and I think enjoy their work.
Pool/Beach: again some bad reviews for these but I don’t know what they’re on about! The beach is beautiful; the pool yes has a few tiles missing but nothing dangerous and faired a good size.
One last thing, when we left in a couple of weeks they were closing for 3 months for refurbishment, so when we went everything was dying down, yet the whole family didn't want to go home. If this happened when they weren't at their best then I would love to go back when its all done up it would be even better :)
Hope everyone else has as much fun as we did, and don't listen to the other reviews!!
