Loch Fyne Hotel

Below is the letter I sent to the Crerar group:
Dear Sir/Madam,
Recently my partner and I stayed in your Loch Fyne Hotel and Spa for the dates 5th to the 9th of January inclusive of this year. We were disappointed on various occasions with various aspects of our experience. Through speaking with other guests, in the passing, there was clearly a real feeling of disappointment at their stay in the hotel that week.
To begin with we were put in the wrong room, a normal, rather than superior room. In addition to this the £50 pamper package and bath robes I had requested were not present. Although the staff were very apologetic and did organise a change of room along with an hour free spa treatment, we were less than impressed with our initial experience of the hotel. Added to this was the shock of the size of room considering the ‘superior’ title you had given it over the normal rooms. It seems that the extra payment was for the same size of room with exactly the same features except a small sofa. The pictures contained on the website are very misleading, the real thing is falls far shorter.
Following this we found that the hotel itself, especially the lounge area was extremely cold and when we asked if more heating could be put on, we were told “that’s it on full power, it’s crap isn’t it.” By one of the bar staff. There were also occasions when we were left standing at the bar waiting to be served as it was unattended. We noticed other customers complaining of the lack of staff present and I advise that it is beyond foolish to have an unstaffed bar when you claim to serve food and drink throughout the day.
The food on the whole was also very disappointing. Although some meals were tasty there seemed to be an unbreakable pattern of serving every main meal on a bed of mash accompanied by further boiled potatoes, consecutively over the four nights. This made the food in part very repetitive and in short seemed to reflect a chef who failed to consider the meal as a whole. There also seemed to be no efficiency in getting drinks ordered from the bar to the table before the starter. No reputable restaurant would serve drinks only prior to the main course; this seemed in part to reflect a deficiency of staff and bad communication. Further to this at breakfast on numerous occasions I was served a cold ‘hot breakfast’; less than impressive. The standard of food, along with the often long waits to have an order taken reflect anything but the standards suggested in the hotels leaflets and on its website. You seem to be advertising what falls far short of the real experience.
It is with much regret that I feel I must write this letter, as it spoiled a much anticipated short break away. It most definitely has put me off ever staying in one of your hotels again, having stayed in far superior hotels for the same price. I hope this feedback is taken seriously as in such times of financial worry people are nervous to part with cash to stay in superior hotels let alone sub-standard, badly run hotels such as yours.
I hope to hear your response to my criticisms.

The Loch Fyne Hotel is situated on the shores of Loch Fyne in Inverary. A building of historical significance, it was commandeered during World War 2 and was the only place outside of 10 Downing Street that Winston Churchill ever convened a War Cabinet.
The hotel is currently undergoing a vast refurbishment (something we were not informed of when booking).
We booked a winter rate of £45.00 per person per night for bed, breakfast and dinner.
The reception is welcoming with new carpets and wall coverings, and check in was fast and efficient.
Our room was decorated to a high standard with double bed, TV, tea and coffee making facilities, trouser press and ensuite bathroom with bath and power shower over.
The only minor issue we really had was the strong smell of paint in our room (it had just been finished) and the fact that the hairdryer was not working. Maybe not a problem for most males but in the web Scottish weather those of us with longer hair do need a dryer. This was reported on Thursday when we arrived, reported again Friday, Saturday and Sunday, yet nothing was done by the time we left on Monday.
Our room also had a rather uninspiring view of the car park at the back of the hotel and, as the hotel was being refurbished, we also had a fantastic view of the three large skips, builders' lorries and rubbish bins from the kitchen. The view from our room could in fact have been of central London!
All meals are served in the dining room with friendly efficient staff. Breakfast presented a good selection including a freshly cooked option although it did get very busy with people waiting for tables at peak times.
Dinner was exceptionally good value with plenty of choice, including vegetarian options. Included within the rate was four courses (five if you included coffee). Guests on the half board option could also choose from the alternative menu for a small supplement. The wine list held a good range.
The hotel also has a separate bar area with entertainment on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Incorporated within the hotel is a "health club" which is free for guests. This includes an indoor pool, spa, steam room, sauna and an outdoor hot-tub. The pool is also open to local residents so can get busy at times but believe us there is nothing quite like sitting in a hot-rub outside gazing at the stairs at night with an outdoor temperature of -7.
Summary:
Overall this is a great value hotel for a short break in Scotland which will be enhanced when all building work is finished. We would recommend that you request a Loch Side view when you book.
