we booked gretna hall for our wedding, which was 1st march 2009, then i found lots of negative reviews, and thought oh my god its going to ruin my wedding day, when we got there it looked beautiful, just like the brochure, yes the carpets were tatty and the beds uncomfortable, the rooms were clean, and we had two ajoining because we have 5 kids, we thought they were friendly and helpful, my wedding was fantastic,we got married in the blacksmiths shop, it was just like the brochure beautiful, it was just us and the kids, we ran off and didnt tell anyone, it was very exciting! short and sweet but thats what we wanted, with our 19 month old screaming through our vows! our registra gill sloan was lovely, very patient, and even held our little one while signing, then photos in the lovely grounds, again just like the brochure. photos taken by emma at.. gretna one stop weddings. and would recomend her, photos are beautiful even tho im on them! then the evening meal, great fast service, lovely food, very patient with our 5 kids, yes the bar was expensive, but you expect that in any hotel, anyway i thought it was a lovely place, and its very old so you have to expect its not modern, and thats why people dont mind about the little things, its all about the history, and its very romantic, well we thought so, so if you are going, just remember how old it is. great place to get married!

valentines fiasco!
3 / 10
Mar 2009, the fords

deciced to go to gretna green for a romantic weekend break on valentines.first impressions of the hotel were pretty good.id read one or two negative comments about the hotel but nothing too bad so decided to try it.
yes the carpets are tatty and tartan( i mean c'mon with the scottish theme were barely into bonny scotland).our room was quite nice however with no cleanliness or damp issues as some have mentioned.thats all the good points im afraid.
the evening meal was poor.my wife ordered pork loin, which turned out to be a pork chop consisting almost entirely of fat and bone.the veg was poorly cooked(rubbery).
onto the bar area; yes the prices are very dear.the staff seemed to be almost all foreign nationals.im not wanting to start a debate on immigrant workers but at best they were mostly unhelpful, and at worst rude and ignorant.
the breakfast fare was reasonable but was ruined by downright bad manners from the surly staff.
sorry but we wont be using this hotel again.

  • Advice: theres not an awful lot to do as its a small pace
  • Activities: we only ate at the hotel unfortunately

dissappointing stay!
1 / 10
Dec 2008, pissed off

In desparate need of refurb carpets taped. Room was ok except the beds were singles pushed together and about to fall apart and uncomfortable! No shower curtain! Hairs in the bed as if not changed or a pet had slept on it. The bar prices were a joke you needed a mortgage to by a round! The only descent thing was our food but we heard complaints from people on later sittings that the food was cold. This is the 3rd time we have stayed here in 3 years this year was disappointing & possible our last! We love coming up here to spend time with friends but next year would choose different hotel.

A lot of hype for this hotel and...
3 / 10
Sep 2007, Mr C Ashford

A lot of hype for this hotel and looks beautiful from the outside, with nice grounds. The hotel itself leaves a lot to be desired, saw reports of carpet been taped down and it was all true. Carpet is thread bare and stuck down, and to be honest the hotel was a bit smelly and damp. Found about two members of staff who were helpful, and poor service in the bar, it would need millions spending to get it up to scratch but they will soon get it charging £99 a night.
On the up side great for taking wedding snaps outside, my tip find a Travelodge type place half the price and much better.
