stayed last weekend
We stayed in the White Swan last Friday and Saturay night, as part of a wedding party, and I was a bit aprehensive after reading some of the review here. My overall impression was that the hotel was clean and tidy with some nice area's to sit and have a beer/coffee, expecially in the Bistro. Our room was facing the main road and the traffic noise was noticable, so I'd advise asking for a room away from the road. The room itself was small but nicely decorated in a modern style and practical, with Tea and coffee making... more
white swan - never again
arrived sunday lunch time, had travelled since 5.00 that morning and we were starving with hunger, went to the bistro for lunch before we checked in. staff unfriendly, bits of lettuce lying at the side of a table beside the bar, where the staff had to walk past every time they went into the kitchen or behind the bar, never lifted while we were there. several items of food not available when we went to order. food very poor class, unfortunately it was sign of things to come. not impressed at all by the standard of the room - for £140 per... more
Over priced
2 Adults 1 child under 5 We were given an attic room with a double bed ,single bed and a camp bed.Room was only big enough for a double The single bed and tv cabinet were missing one leg each We had 4 flights of stairs the top two were steep enough for me to worry about let alone an under 5 I had to jam cardboard into sash windows to stop rattling No heating (we did eventually get an electric heater a day later) Wet towells were not replaced but folded backup The duvet cover was ripped Breakfast was... more
Vastly overpriced
The hotel is one of those small town market square hotels I usually love, with beautiful carved wooden panneling in the dining room. The room we stayed in was newly refurbished, had everything you need and was small, and at £120 a night it was not value for money. Everything about the whole hotel smacked of penny pinching - the hairdryer that only worked while you pressed the button, the small amount of toilet paper, only one small packet of cheap biscuits, the cheapest shampoo and shower gel in large containers to make sure you couldn't take... more
Lovely staff, great food, enjoyable surroundings
My hubby and I stayed here last Oct for a short weekend break. After a long drive from the Highlands, we found the hotel quite easily on entering Alnwick but had to stop in front of the hotel to ask where the parking was (down a wee alley at the rear of the hotel, spaces not a problem at that time). When we entered through the revolving doors we were met with the sight of several snoozing pensioners in front of the roaring fire! The receptionist obviously caught our amused glances and made a wee joke about it...much to our amusement! We were... more
A little disapointing considering the cost
After spending quite a few nights in the basic travel lodges we decided to try a hotel that claimed to offer a little extra.Perhaps as it was the low season the hotel could be forgiven for the building work that was going on,but its corridors and staircase was nt the cleanest. The room, after a long hike to get to it,was imaculate.Stunning bed, plasma television and a decent size, although the shower was barely a trickle and could ve used a wee bit more water preasue. Parking was very restricted and I'd imagine at a premium in high... more
Stay here for the Treehouse experience!
We also stayed at this hotel last weekend. We had an enjoyable time. We had requested a renovated room and that is what we got!! At first we had a problem with the shower but the friendly staff soon rectified this for us. We booked to eat at the Treehouse restaurant at Alnwick Garden for my 40th Birthday on the Friday night and we were NOT disappointed. What a magical experience that was. We had champagne back at the White Swan, then used porter service after the bar had closed at 11pm. I didn't rate the cooked breakfast much the... more
Room for improvement
Stayed at the hotel for a couple of nights.Friday night we ate out which was fine. Saturday ,we deceided to eat in the restaurant my husband ordered a steak and asked for it to be well done it came and the blood oozed when he cut into it. He send it back to be cooked for a little longer,my meal was fine but I had finished it before my husbands steak finally came back. After the meal which was very over- priced we went into the bar but couldn't get moved as there was a wedding on ! We took our drinks upstairs as there were no seats and... more
Very Quiet until renovation work began
Alnwick is like a ghost town in January. We travelled on the weekend of the 6th and they were just taking down the Christmas decorations around the town. The hotel seemed rather empty but we were checked in by very pleasant staff and booked into the restaurant for the evening meal. The room was on the top floor up some creaky stairboards and past two or three rooms which were undergoing rennovation works. The builders had their music playing and whistled along whilst the woodcutting machinery did its best to drown out the noise. I cant blame... more
It's quite nice
We stayed here for 3 nights in July. It was quite nice, but we had a room in the eaves which was quite hot as it was the middle of the heatwave! Generally it was quite a nice place, though quite pricey.
