Not the best choice in August
from Sequin
We enjoyed our holiday in Mauritius but it wasn't the idyllic paradise we were expecting. The Maritim was set out in wonderful grounds with a beachfront location but the beach area was small and in August it was far too windy and chilly to sunbathe on. All the guests settled around the pool which became rather lively with more children than I had imagined would be there. The rooms were fine and clean. The food ok although, as with all all inclusive resorts, it quickly became boring. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere. We enjoyed the caberet but it was the only option in the evening. Mauritius does not have a great deal to offer so if you don't like to sunbathe your options are limited. There are some beaches on Mauritius that are sheltered and warm in August so do some research if you are going in the summer. The rum cocktails at the Maritim were lethal - beware! Service was not always fast and I did not feel that the staff were happy to be of service- I think it pays to tip generously at the beginning of your holiday!
Pure paradise!

We've just returned from 8 days at the Maritim and it is fair to say it is complete paradise. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the bar and restaurant staff cant do enough to make sure you are happy and comfortable. The food is amazing, especially that in La Maree on the beach. The rooms are lovely and airy and beautifully presented with rose petals on the bed. The pool area is gorgeous but you have to be up early to get a bed down there! The beach is lovely and you dont get hassled by the men selling the necklaces and sarongs. Lots of watersports on offer and a golf course although my boyfriend said its not the best course. Lots and lots of weddings here and even more honeymooners, so its very romantic. We went horse racing on the saturday in Port Luis which is fun, but dont do deep sea fishing if you get at all sea sick!!!!!!! I'd love to go back!!!!
fantastic everything!!

We have just returned from our 14 night honeymoon. We have to say this hotel is fantastic we stayed in a comfort room, which was lovely. There is a wide choice of food, great entertainment, very friendly staff who can not do enough for you, lovely beach and swimming pools although the pool is a little cold - you just have to be brave!!. We went on a quad bike trip up in the mountains, which was worth every penny (great fun!!). This hotel is first class and we really did not want to come home, we can not wait to go back and have started saving for our first anniversary next June. Dont delay book this hotel today!!!!!

What a lovely place - We stayed for 10 days for our honeymoon and wish we could have stayed longer (left 9th June 05). Even after a 12 hr flight it is all worth it when you walk into the reception area and see a great sight of the Indian Ocean. We stayed in a comfort room which was more than you need with a nice balcony that had sea and pool views. The staff cannot do enough to help - they are all very friendly and courteous and will never walk past you without saying hello and making eye contact. One of the highlights for me was the fact that there was so much to do during the day, a whole list of activities are arranged from morning until the evening - from water skiing to football (make sure you have a pair of old trainers with you!!). Golf course is a bit like a 'pitch and putt' but I hired some clubs for the 10 days and played nearly everyday, no strict dress codes, on my last day I even played in flip flops/bare feet. Great if you are a sporty person. All of the restaurants are superb with a different menu each night in the Belle Vue (buffet or set menu). The Mon Desir is set in an amazing environment and the food is top notch (we saved our complimentary honeymoon dinner until the end of the 10 days and it made it even more special). The La Maree beach restaurant was a lovely setting with some of the tables on the sand and we had lunch there most days (catch of the day was a popular choice for us). If you are on the 'all inclusive' make sure you clarify what is included or you could get a shock when you check out. We met some lovely people there who were either on their honeymoon or celebrating a special anniversary. We would love to go again!!!!
One of the World's most wonderful spots

I believe it is very important you put the review in context with the level of the reviewer him/herself. We are both 28, and have travelled a fair bit, both in the US/Africa & Europe. We usually go for the mid ranged type holiday, made up of self arranged trip or some package holidays. We stayed in a delux room and was booked as a package holiday. Overview - amazing place, amazing service, great variety and things to do and just a amazing 2 weeks in heaven..... (would return ASAP if I had the funds as It was suprisingly great value for money) We were on honeymoon at the Maritim. The flight with Air Mauritius was great, so dont let that put you off. More detail on the hotel:- If you are looking for a quiet time, loads of space, great service & food. An island with lots to do if wanted or just to relax and soak up good sun & food, then this resort & hotel has everything.. The gardens are 1-2 miles long, has 2/3 beaches and 2 great pools & 9 holes of golf , horseriding in their own stables (only £6 a lesson) and a farm with 15 Giant Turtles (you can ride them) The staff are wonderful... extremely friendly and service that I have never been beaten........ They are so great that we even tipped them and this is not standard but due to the low salaries this was very appricated.. If you go.. then enjoy.... if not save the pennies and make it a must see one day
Fantastic.......once again!

We returned earlier this week from the Maritim and wish we were still there now! We flew with air mauritius which was a good choice, there was plenty of leg room and the plane was half empty so we were able to stretch out and relax. No problem with delays, ontime both ways. Two and a half years ago we were married at the same hotel and returned with our daughter and parents and found it to be just the same as we remembered. My parents had a standard room which was lovely, with a huge bed and a wonderful view from the 1st floor balcony. We had a suite with a large bathroom, walk in shower and two seperate toilets and a dressing room. Double doors from the bedroom and living area led onto the balcony. The welcome cocktail party is super, the drinks flow and the hotel management introduce themselves to you and tell you where to find them. The trees are decorated with tiny lights and canapes are served. The hotel grounds are very well kept, we visited the giant tortoises and the other animals. The horse keeper was happy to show us around and tell us the history of the horses, they were in good health which was nice to see. The main restaurant serves buffet breakfast with plenty of choice and a glass of sparkling wine if you fancy! The dinner alternates between buffet and part menu. We were very happy with this and enjoyed some lovely meals in this restaurant especially the indian night, where many of the dishes are cooked by ladies in authentic costume and the retaurant is decorated. We also ate at mon desir, the a la carte restaurant and la maree, the restaurant on the beach. Both of these meals were outstanding, we had the lobster menu in la maree.....what a treat! The staff are excellant, always pleasant, friendly and with big smiles. we were suprised how many of the staff recognised us from our last visit, even the wedding photographers and they must see alot of faces in a year! The quarter deck bar is very relaxing with big wicker chairs and a fabulous cocktail menu, we did enjoy these!! Daytime snacks are served in the bar area, theres a good choice if you feel peckish! We ate lunch daily in la maree, my husband liked the minute steak but i prefered a salad or catch of the day (fish.) Our daughter favoured the pasta dishes or a freshly made pizza. We saw many weddings, there was one a day, sometimes two. These are later in the day as it is cooler. This gives you time in the morning to work out in the air conditioned gym or relax in the sauna and steam room, then maybe have a manicure and have your hair styled by the lovely ladies in the beauty salon. The snorkelling is very good from the beach, and theres also a glass bottom boat trip. I hope I have included everything but do email me if you would like to ask a question. Mauritius is a beautiful country with wonderful people and we were lucky enough to find the perfect resort for us on this paradise island, I hope we are able to return one day.

We have just returned from the Maritim and thought it was wonderful, even though we only had a comfort room it was more than adequate, huge king size bed, nice balcony with views of the sea. The sea was calm and clear with good beach service from the waiters including cold face towels! Belle Vue was one of the best buffets we had we were there for 12 nights and never saw the same menu twice. Execellent service even down to carrying your plates back to your table for you. La maree on the beach was also very good, a credit was given for the AI portion of the meal, even so the meal was very reasonable. Quarter deck bar: lovely position overlooking the sea again the staff coundn't do enough for you, even the Maitre D was giving us cocktails. The only thing that was a bit annoying was silly things like afternoon cake wasn't included in the AI neither was fresh orange juice in a cocktail!! Didn't find having to sign for bill a pain as another reader had said. Just glad not to have to wear wristbands. Saw most of the Island hired taxi drivers from Hotel reception again very reasonable. Its worth getting out and about. Real down fall of the holiday AIR MAURITIUS 12 hour delays both ways!!
The Maritim was good but theres better

We stayed at the Maritim hotel after staying at the Jamierah Beach hotel in Dubai in July 2004. I don't know if its because we were blown away by our first choice of location and hotel but I would not say its a 5* but definitely a 4*. The package you get as Honeymooners was brilliant - Champagne with your own glasses to keep along with t-shirts. Flower petals on the bed and around the bath. Nice start to the week ahead. Restaurants wise - we had a complimentary meal for two at the Mon Désir which is an à-la-carte-Restaurant and is not included in halfboard and we could see why as it was by far the best food in the hotel. The Belle Vue is where you take most meals if you want it including free within your stay which is part buffet and part service. We are not too keen on buffet. The beach restaurant "La Marèe" with additional gazebos offers the perfect surrounding for a romantic dinner for two. It is the à-la-carte-restaurant in the evenings and is not included in halfboard so as you can see not everything is all inclusive. One thing you have to do is take a helicopter trip around the island this was worth every penny and if we had not done this I would have come away from Mauritius thinking wheres all the beauty. You get to see all the island and it was very beautifull and well worth doing. Other trips we did were the under water Submarine tour brilliant also so we have seen both aspects of the island. One other we did was an old fashioned sea bed walk. This was poor, the cost was £50 for about 15 mionutes under water and we saw about 5 fish and thats only because we fed them bread. Go to Mauritius if you want to chill out and be romantic but get a really top hotel and check what you get for all inclusive.
Honeymoon at Maritim
from Charlieboots
We stayed at Maritim for our honeymoon in September 2004. We didn't get the room upgrade as there were so many honeymooners there but our 'twin' room, despite not being a double, was absolutely fine, there was plenty of room, nice furniture, it was cleaned everyday, the bathroom was very nice and everything was of a high standard. The food at Maritim was delicious and extremely varied, there were salads, soups, pasta's, meats, vegetarian food, etc. loads of choice for every single meal although it is a buffet restaurant. The local red wine available with the AI package was appalling and the imported wine was rather expensive but sparkling wine was included in AI so we mainly had that with our evening meal and then beers/spirits or cocktails in the bar later. We found that if you tip at the bar (just a couple of pounds) early on in your stay you will get a special service whereby you are taken to a table and served on a very regular basis rather than finding your own table and going to the bar for drinks. The A'la Carte restaurant was beautiful, we ate there about five times as it was so nice and a totally relaxed, serene atmosphere with piano music. The only disappointment for me was that the pool was icy cold, I love swimming and being in the water but unfortunately stayed out of it for most of the holiday much to my disappointment. If you aren't bothered about being in the water there wont be any bad points to your holiday.
A first class holiday from beginning to end

We have just returned from a 12 night trip staying at the Maritim Hotel in Mauritius. We have stayed at many hotels all over the world and the Maritim rates as one of the best. From our arrival to our departure we received a first class service from all of the Maritim staff. The staff are not only curtious but go out of their way to be helpful, We have never been so well looked after. We stayed in a Prestige room which was excellent. The variety of food was very good and cooked to a high standard. Whilst we were there we were also invited by guests to two weddings. A family member had also told us about their wedding at the Maritim but there's nothing like experiencing something first hand. Both of the couples received a very special wedding which was unique to them. Again the hotel handled the occasions with great care and consideration. If anybody is looking for a first class hotel I cannot recommend the Maritim highly enough.

The Maritim is a wonderful hotel and as our first trip to Mauritius was a great welcome to a lovely island. From the moment we arrived we were made welcome, the hotel was heavily booked and we had been upgraded to a junior suite, absolutely fantastic. Own living room, huge... more
