For my first trip to Jamaica, I stayed at Sunset Jamaica Grande. Thank goodness, Jamaica is an awesome island because the hotel was far from awesome. Check in took way too long. The reps at the counter never seemed to have a clue. The customer service was BAD. The only... more

I found the Jamaica Grande to be in need of urgent repair to its North Wing. The rooms were dated and the fitting required replacing. The place could do with redecorating and a bit of money being spent on it. However the service was very friendly the welcome was warm the... more

No way its a 4 star. The staff all seem to work at one speed which is slow if there is a line of 5 or 500 its all the same slow speed. The resort is showing its age big time. The volleyballs have no leather left on them the basket ball net has no net just the rim the... more

If your idea of an ideal vacation involves a travel mug full of beer 24/7, loud music and partying, stop reading now, you'll love the place. However, if you are looking for a relaxing, nice vacation, read on. My husband & I just returned today from Ocho Rios Sunset Grande... more

The hotel itself was below the stantard I would have expected for a 4 star in that there was little attention to detail....for example there were no hand wash basin or bath plugs. I am sure the Grande was very grand in its day but despite a recent refurbishment it looked... more

I read a few of the reviews before leaving for my trip and I have to say I was worried. But once I got there I didn't know what all the fuss was about. My family and I were attending a wedding and we had a fabulous time. I was very pleasently surprised. The room was very... more

A Fantastic Vacation!
I just got back from the SJG--I was there from the 17th-24th and loved it! The staff was very friendly and warm, the resort was at a slow time of the year so you felt very well taken care of. It is a long drive from the Montego Day airport (90-120minutes) but if you want to stay in Ocho Rios, you have to be willing to make the drive. The room had a beautiful view of the ocean and the resort. The food was great and had a good variety. We went to all the restaurants--I wan't crazy about the Carribean Fusion restaurant, but the... more
Great Hotel, Great Holiday
I stayed at the SJG 4 – 11 Sep 05. Overall I would say the SJG is a lovely hotel and I would be surprised if you did not have a good time whilst staying there. The food is great, the staff are friendly and provide a high standard of service, the newly built parts are lovely and the pools and beach are good too. My only main criticism is that the rooms are not to the 5* status the hotel is advertised at by some travel agents. Don’t get we wrong they are pretty good, just not 5*. Trip there and back/ Check in and out I... more
I Loved SJG and it Loved me right Back!
My Review of SJG I will do this on a day by day scenario. I’ll try to keep it to the hotel. Thursday: Landed at Sangster. Serenaded by a “choir” in traditional garb while wilting in the line for immigration – the only part not having A/C. Wasn’t too bad a wait. Got to the bus – had to wait for others… We had Jamaica Tours Ltd – James was one cool cat. The drive was nice, stopped @ a rest area. It was 2.5-3 hrs… Arrived @ the hotel about 3:30-4pm – looked gorgeous! Stepped in the lobby, it was... more
Absoluetly out of this world!!!!
We stayed at SJG from the 29th August until 13th September. It was our honeymoon and all I can say is It was fantastic, I was also worried with all of these bad reviews before we went, but thought hey what the hell, and all I can say is Oh my god what do you all want for your money. There was a bit of construction going on around us but also alot of drink and sun and music and very happy and friendly amazing staff. At the end of the day these guys are trying to rebuild and upgrade their country and their hotels and it is going on... more
The Grande is Great - Work In Progress - Good Value
I "Loveja", and I have a ton of experience with Jamaica and its hotels. The Grande is great. Yes, the work is still in progress. The value is good; the future is great. Let me first of all say that the work in progress does NOT take away from the hotel or your stay. The upgrade is necessary due to the opening of several new hotels on the island (ie. Riu, Sandals, Fiesta, etc.). These other hotels bill themselves as 5-star. We also stayed at the Riu Negril and visited bith Rius, during this recent visit to Jamaica. The Grande is better... more
Loved Sunset Grande !!!
We have just come back from a 2 week stay at the sunset jamaica grande hotel. The hotel woz excellent i cnt c what all the bad reviews were about. We where worried before we went because of the bad reviews that were coming back from other customers who had stayed here. There is a little work going on around the hotel but this is kept on a low profile and the hotel is lovely as it is! All of the staff are very helpful and welcome u with drinks as soon as you get to the hotel. We experienced the dolphin cove which was also very... more
What's so grande about the grande?
I have just come back from this resort. There are a number of things that still have not been completed but on the whole the resort was fine. Although there were a group of people within my group whom had visited the resort prior to the new management, name and refurbishment whom felt the hotel's standards had dropped. No ice cream!!! I mean how can a family orientated resort have no ice cream. We were told once the entertainment complex has been completed, ice cream will be back on the menu. Not enough traditional dishes. The... more
Not that bad
We went 3 weeks ago (23.7.5) for two weeks. When we arrived it was plesant. Food was ok, entertainment a bit poor but never really took to hotel caberet anyway. Prefered night life outside of the hotel. Swimming pools were open as was a makeshift casino. Staff were helpful, pleasant and can not be faulted (except for in the childrens area, which is confined to a room at the moment). Would not choose to put my child in there again. Especially when they go swimming. Planned trips were good. In the second week however, when... more
Definitely not the Rennaisance
My fiance and I just returned from the Sunset Jamaica Grande (August 2005) . Even though this is now under new management and renovations are being made, I truly wish they would have kept the Rennaisance standards. Don't believe that this place has improved as we were there last year and things were much better. There is no hot tub (jacuzzi), there isn't a clock radio in the room, so if you don't wear a watch, you never know what time it is, there isn't a coffee maker as there used to be. You also have to be connected to an operator to... more
SJG exceeded expectation
I stayed at SJG July 30, 2005 to August 02, 2005. I have family members in JA and I spent most of my time with them but I wanted a little retreat. I must admit that I was very nervous after reading about the ongoing construction at SJG. However, when I arrived I was quite pleased. I arrived at 10pm and was quickly checked in. I was then advised that the Grand Palm was still serving dinner. The Palm was very impressive. The staffs were wonderful and the food was delightful. During our 4 days stay at SJG we ate at all the restaurants... more
