Sunset Jamaica Grand Resort Reviews
" totally satisfiying holiday for all age group "
Submitted By: redrose19632004My sister and I(who are in our 40's)also my 9year old son... was fascinated by the beauty, good management and organisation of this resort and the high level of staff professionalism. The place is so huge, well kept and beautiful. We found everything to be of high standard ie; the day and night entertainment, the childcare facilities, swimming areas, the sea and water sports, food... and there is even transport to take you to and pick you up from one of the many night clubs in the area.
To me, the only down fall was the night club within the compound, which only a very few people went to. The music was more european taste than westindian but on the other hand, this was to be expected because there were more torists in the resort and furthermore there are plenty of real night clubs nearby but out of the resort.
Well done management! You seem to have considered everyone's needs as much as possible and well done staff for your professionalism.

Advice: Loved location of Sunset Grande, in the middle of everywhere. Planning our next holiday for there
Activities: There are many eating places: one italian, Jamaican, chinese, buffet and out door grill

Submitted By: Mr K Not TodayWe stayed there for 10 days, last week of August and beginning of September. The hotel certainly did manage to leave something to remember.
Let me start with the beginning:
arrival-checking in, people behind the desk were friendly. Somehow, our reservation didn't come through in the system, but was not a big problem.
For the people familiar, we were directed to the 7th floor in the North tower.
Only 3 out of 4 elevators working.
Arrived in the room:
Room was not very clean but we were both extremely tired so we didn't bother, at least sheets were clean.
Bathroom was ridiculous, really needs updating and "Grand" maintenance; broken tiles, dirty under the counter, outdated, no extraction fan for when you’re showering.
The sliding window leading to the balcony didn't close properly, resulting in lot of noise coming in from the evening entertainment and the daily program announcements starting around 9.30AM
Getting fresh towels when housekeeping cleans up the room in the morning seems to be a big problem. When we came back into our room to shower before going to dinner, we had to call guest services/housekeeping several times to ask if we could get towels. (one day, we called 3 times and waited 1,5 hour!!!)
Ice machine on our floor not working, was plugged in and connected, didn’t produce anything. Ceiling panels bended and here and there on the brink of collapse. Calling elevator, not all (indication) lights working also inside elevator, support rails missing.
Food-Dining experience: buffet style dining, but as with all buffets which are not properly set up and maintained and strictly checked by staff: lukewarm, average quality, nothing special. There was a nice corner dedicated to Jamaican food. My wife is Jamaican, so she was excited to see this. How big was our disappointment, apparently it is very difficult to produce Jamaican style dishes.
Breakfast/lunch/dinner: not enough servers to provide a quick service:
- Sometimes we had to wait half an hour before we would get tea/water.
- during rush hour, service staff really couldn’t cope with demand and cleaning tables.
- what is the thing with serving coffee/hot water out of broken thermos cans (Grand Palm restaurant) ??? Most of them looked like they had barely survived a nuclear war. How unprofessional does that look???
On the positive side: Jerk chicken is really good, in the grill, in the Jamalicious café and also in the open dining area (Grand Palm).
Italian restaurant was ok, the fact that there was normal table service, made it.
The wine they serve throughout the hotel was mediocre quality. So is also the coffee: there are two coffee stations in the hotel, one of them is Café Bean. We are not sure, but it looks that it was once destined to be a manned coffee station. Not manned anymore, big kettle with coffee, which stands there for hours. We tried coffee twice and it was horrible.
Because of weather conditions (later more) we had to eat a couple of times in the Grand ballroom where somehow mysteriously the way the food was presented was much better and it was even warm!
Swimming pools are very nice and well kept. Beach is also nice, but the moment you step in the water, you should wear plastic sandals because of the seaweed growing on the sand bottom.
Hotel staff is friendly and willing to help, it only takes some time.
Too many kids running around unattended, playing with elevators, however, this is not really the fault of the hotel.
During our stay, Jamaica was hit by tropical storm/hurricane Gustav. The way the hotel informed us and prepared everything for the worst, was exemplary!

Basically a non-smoking resort but do facillitate cigarette smokers (no bob marley allowed)
Tipping the staff is not endorsed at all.

Submitted By: Mr M JohnsonThe hotel was clean not just the rooms but the pools, bars even the wash rooms ( WC) was spotless.
The private beach is great because you don’t get the usual pestering from the locals to buy stuff.
There is plenty of choice on the food front to keep everyone happy. I am a fussy eater but didn’t find any problems with what was on offer although I gave the curried goat a body swerve.
There are fantastic things to do and see in Ocho Rios, The Dunns river cool running’s trip is a must, we also went to a place called ricks Cafe in Negril to see the cliff diving ( out of this world ) the only problem with that trip was the 4 hour each way coach trip.
The cost of things are quite expensive, about the same as the UK, so don’t go thinking it’s a poor county so everything will be cheap.
To finish off I will be going back to Jamaica again and would tell anybody to give it a try.

Submitted By: Mrs D CoburnLike in other reviews the lobby is amazing but that was where it stopped for me, the rooms were tiny, dirty and the maid kept knocking my clothes on the floor and then mopping them with her dirty mop.
The Italian restaurant was awful and the food frankly, inedible. We spent our entire savings taking our family away with us to this incorrectly rated hotel £20.000 for 14 of us so disappointment was not the word for it. When we wrote to our travel agent to complain we did not so much as get a letter from them, so we will not be travelling with them again.
On a more positive note the staff are lovely but if you are looking for, or are used to staying in five star hotels leave this one well alone.

Submitted By: Mrs J O'neillThe hotel was lovely in places and a bit run down in others but the part that had been refurbished looked really nice. Would I go back no I don't think so the place of Ochos Rios was not safe to go out at night and therefore it was a bit restrictive, through the day drug dealers would pester you if you walked past them.
We went to Dunns River Falls which was spectacular that I would recommend.

Submitted By: Mr D P FordyceThere is one main buffet area for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with loads of selection. Then there are 3 restaurants (Chinese, Italian, Caribbean) which are superb! (Need to book these). The pool areas are extensive and clean and tidy, with lots going on during the day if you want to join in. The water sports are really good too. The bars are superb, with excellent cocktails, and the staff are very polite and helpful.
The beach is average (man-made), but private to the hotel which is nice. There is a good gym for the gym goers, and a lovely spa (costs extra). The rooms are average but we were hardly ever in ours. Overall an excellent hotel. Best thing: the cocktails! Try the Mud Slides!!!

We flew Premier Gold with My Travel from Gatwick and despite some of the reviews we read before we left about My Travel we had no complaints despite the journey taking an extra 2 hours on the way there due to bad weather in NE USA.
Arrival at Airport:
The airport was a bit chaotic and it took ages to get our luggage. Apparently the man loading the bags onto the conveyor belt required a sit down after every two bags!!!!! There was also a member of airport staff removing bags from the conveyor belt and stacking them to the side (in front of the conveyor belt blocking one side) – so if you can’t find your bag at first don’t panic.
When we finally got/found our bags and moved through arrivals to get onto the bus a porter took our bags and put them on a tatty old truck (your bags travel separately from you). He then advised us our $5 tip was not enough (despite us having only 4 bags). We were later advised by our rep that the going rate is $1 per bag.
Transfer:
The transfer from the airport to the hotel took approx. 2 hours and the roads were a little bumpy. However after having been traveling for nearly 15 hours I found this just sent me to sleep!!!!
Hotel:
On arrival we sat in the impressive lobby and received a fruit punch before we checking in very quickly.
We had rooms in the South Tower on the 9th floor. As mentioned in some of the other reviews the rooms are spotlessly clean but “Island Typical” – basic and brightly coloured. We had a fantastic view of the beach, pool area, mountains and part of the town.
Bars:
We tried all of the bars during our stay, and found all of the staff to be really friendly and helpful. The drinks were strong and the only problem we had was finding one of the elusive ash trays! However bar staff will provide a plastic cup with some water in it as a make-do ash tray if you miss out on a real one.
Food:
We ate mainly at the buffet and found it to be very varied with a good selection of Jamaican and US style food. We also had lunch at the Jamalicious Café one day – which was good (but for really good patties go off of the resort and turn left to Juices – they were amazing!). We also had dinner at the Italian restaurant one night which was also excellent.
Pool:
We spent any pool time at the pool by the South Beach. This was definitely the quieter of the two pools (and didn’t have a swim up bar – although the walk to the South Beach Bar and Grill took about 30 seconds!!!) It also had individual gazebos so if a rain shower did occur you stayed sheltered! (The rain was really cold). The gazebos also had small separate pools in front of them so it could feel like you had a pool all to yourself!
Beach:
We sat on the South Beach the one day we spent at the Beach. Due to the rain we had the first two days we were there the water was a little cloudy but we definitely did not see any oil slicks.
Entertainment:
We found this a little hit and miss – we found that the bands didn’t play enough reggae for our liking. However on two nights it was really good – Monday night there was a four piece male group who were amazing, followed by a male singer who was hysterically funny – he was running around all over the place and even ended up lying on the floor at one point. Then on the Friday night Karen Smith sang and she was fantastic. It was the only night we saw the dance floor completely full.
Out and About:
Unfortunately the weather for our first two days was not very good (it rained and rained and rained!) but we took this as an opportunity to go into the town. Everyone was incredibly friendly and we were hardly approached at all – in fact we felt more hassled when we were in Gran Canaria than we ever did in Ocho Rios. Places to definitely visit are Mama Marleys Bar, the shopping centers (particularly for diamonds – thank you sweetheart!) and Juicy Patties for some of the best chicken patties we’ve ever had.
We also went on two excursions which we would definitely recommend – the Spirit of Reggae Tour and the Cool Runnings Trip to Dunns River.

Submitted By: Miss N A HeadonWater sports are widely available from outside the hotel - I would definitely recommend jet skiing and paragliding - you get a fantastic view over the bay and of the hotel, although there is a charge for these (only the non-motorized water sports are included in your inclusive package). There is a wide variety of food on the complex - there is a main dining room, 2 beach grills (one of which turns into a steak house in the night), an Italian Restaurant, a Chinese Restaurant and also a cafe, where they serve sandwiches and light snacks etc.
You can basically eat and drink as much as you like while staying at the hotel. The Italian Restaurant is lovely, you can eat as many as five courses if you want to and your wine glass is never empty - they keep coming to your table to top you up. Rum is free flowing from 10.00am - 02.00am and you can drink whatever cocktails you can think of. I would advise that you try and tip the staff at the hotel whenever possible, but try to be discreet as it can be frowned upon.
While visiting Ochos Rios, I would definitely recommend visiting Dunns River Falls on the Reggae Boat, you have a Reggae Party on the way home and they provide you with Rum Punch - yum yum!! It's definitely worth climbing the falls, but beware, as the force of the water is pretty scary!! I would recommend swimming with the dolphins, it's pretty expensive, but a brilliant experience and they take lovely photos of you, which cost around 8 dollars each.
If you don't intend swimming with the dolphins though, I wouldn't bother visiting Dolphins Cove, as there is not much else to see, apart from a jungle trail. During your stay in Jamaica, you will be offered lots of weed and when we visited Bob Marley's house on the jeep safari, a man actually chased the jeep trying to sell it to us - crazy!! You would be mad not to visit Jamaica, and the Sunset Grande is the nicest hotel I’ve ever stayed in.
The staff are happy, friendly and helpful and it has a high standard of cleanliness.
