Disappointed
We stayed at Rothay Manor for 2 nights in the Loughrigg Suite. This suite is in a separate building across the car park. While the suite was very spacious, it is of 70's or early 80's vintage, is outdated and smelled like a bad Holiday Inn. (It's a bad sign when you see a Glade air freshener on the shelf in the bathroom.) We booked this hotel for its character, but our accommodations in the separate building were nothing like the character of the main hotel. Our arrival at the hotel is a perfect example of the importance of first... more
A gem of a place in a gem of a place
The Rothay Manor is a wonderful hotel in a beautiful setting. A bit pricey, but a classic case of getting what you pay for. We did not see any other place in the area that we would have preferred to stay at, but we saw a huge number that made us thankful to be where we were. We stayed 4 nights in the Loughrigg Cottage, a 2-bedroom, 1-1/2 bath detached cottage next door to the main hotel. It was wonderful. Everything about the place was great: the staff, the food, the location, the setting, etc., etc., etc. It's a convenient 10-minute walk to... more
A great way to relax
I stayed here with my wife and 1 yr old daughter for a long weekend and its hard to think of any criticisms. Staff were all really helpful and happy to sort out any specific requests (e.g. well cooked veg for my daughter to eat). The lounges are very relaxing and a great place to enjoy the afternoon tea. Room was a good size (we had a luxury room in the main hotel) and had a balcony which would be lovely in the summer - unfortunately it rained all the time we were there. Food was also very good. We will definitely be back.
Excellent choice
Left the kids at home & thoroughly enjoyed the break to recharge. We stayed for 2 nights 25/26 Nov 06 in a Superior room - these are all at the front on the 1st floor, with balconies. The hotel had great character dating back to 1825. Excellent location - easy to walk into the centre of Ambleside and quick to travel round the lakes. Quality fittings, food and service. Nothing I could criticise, everything to be happy about. The staff actually seemed pleased to be there & enjoyed serving you. Lounges were very comfortable &... more
Relaxing little gem of a place.
We have just returned from an excellent 2 night break which we took to" re-charge our batteries "for the rest of the summer season. We are in the tourist industry and needed a break to help us unwind and we could not have picked a better place. It is just set back from the road but so peaceful and relaxing in the beatiful grounds. The owners and staff so efficent and most welcoming .The cleanleness and decor of the hotel was first class. It was nice to have breakfast served to you instead of help your self which is want I wanted to be spoilt... more
Good one.
Please don't tell everyone about this jewel in the Lake District or we may never be able to get a room again! We have stayed so many times we have probably sampled all of the rooms. Julia and rest of the staff will give a warm welcome. Good food and very comfortable.
Disappointing
My husband and I spent a weekend at this hotel and decided to treat ourselves and stay in one of the luxury suites in the grounds of the hotel. According to their website the suite had extra privacy because of the location. However, the room faces the carpark and it would have benefitted from some voile or blinds at the window for daytime privacy. The bathroom was newly refurbished and beautiful but no curtain or blind at all at the frosted glass window, so again a lack of privacy as this window faces the carpark entrance. On a... more
A pleasant hotel
The Rothay Manor Hotel is in a superb setting - beautiful gardens and as someone else pointed out, its a very nice building. We stayed in the Wansfell Suite - it's a private lodge out in the gardens, with its own front door, a tiny hallway, and a parking space of your own. There was a table and chairs at the side of the Lodge overlooking your own private area of the garden. The Suite is pleasant enough, but I felt the bathroom is ready for refurbishment. Just a few cracks in the tiles and so on. A very comfortable,... more
A jewel of a hotel !
I chose this hotel when I proposed to my girlfriend and it turned out to be an excellent choice. This hotel is one of those places where you relax and unwind fully within 10 minutes of arriving, its setting is just so beautiful. It is just a short walk to Ambleside, which means that its well positioned, quiet and tranquil. The hotel is very well run, its staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel is very nicely decorated and is exceptionally clean with antiques and bookcases for you to look around. Its rooms are large, warm and very... more
Absolutely exceptionale
We recently took our two teenagers on a whirlwind tour of the UK and stayed in eight different hotels. Rothay Manor absolutely, hands down, was our favorite. I knew I picked a good one when we drove into the parking lot and parked our rental car amongst a plethora of luxury cars - always a good sign! But don't let the Jaguars and Mercedes scare you off - this is affordable! We had a gorgeous family room with a double bed, a single bed and a chair bed. I had no idea what a chair bed was going to be, but it was fine and comfortable. Much... more
