"We stayed at the Saluation this week. Whilst the hotel itself is really nice the bedroom was a bit of a laugh. The room was quite small and sloped in different places. Although there was meant to be satellite TV we only had National Geographic and Paramount Comedy, but on the other hand you don't visit the Lake District to watch TV!! The pillows were very thin and I used the spare one and asked for a third one. The matress also sloped rather but that rather kept in with the theme of the room!!

I used the spa bath for a few seconds!! It seemed to fire everywhere so I switched it off quickly ! This was not the hotel's fault, rather mine because I've never used one before!!

The breakfasts were really good.

Maybe if we stayed there again I would go for a family room or a superior room or a room that didn't slope!!

Never disappointed at the Salutation

"My wife and I have stayed at the Salutation and its sister hotel the Red Lion at Grasmere on numerous occasions over a good number of years and have never been disappointed with the rooms or service. Staff have always been friendly and helpful.

In fact we are looking forward to visiting later this month. We have been members of the Westmorland club since we first started going around ten years ago.

We always spend a few days and take advantage of the walking opportunities that abound particularly around Ambleside. The advantage the Salutation has is its position in the town and proximity to a range of really good restaurants and pubs. Meals served both in the dining room and bar meals are excellent value at the hotel, but it is nice to go out and sample other fare without having to go by car.

One of our favourites is the Priest Hole, where we have never been disappointed.

Its great to know that the pool is now complete - we're really looking forward to that. The leisure facilities have been somewhat restricted in the past but we never found them over used and could always go for a relaxing spell in the jaccuzi and steam room after the exertions of walking.

Happy New Year

"Have just spent New Year at the Salutation for the second year and have already booked up for the 2007 New Year celebrations! Cannot speak highly enough of this hotel - amenities, food & location are all first class and this is topped by fantastic staff who go out of their way to help you. The New Year Gala Dinner Dance is also highly recommended, from the Champagne reception, to the lovely dinner, and midnight fireworks, with some nifty footwork on the dance floor in between!!

One of the few superior hotels that is also dog friendly - "Charlie" had a great time too!!!

A second visit and worth every penny.

"Having stayed at the Ambleside Salutation for our first anniversary back in April 2006 there was only one place we could return to for a short break. Booked the night before as an impulse, we decided to return to this lovely hotel.

We stayed in a club room, it happened to be the same room we stayed in back in April which was nice. The room is very comfortable, the balcony is lovely in summer, the view is great, looking over Ambleside. The room was very clean as was the bathroom which looked very professional and had a very nice jacuzzi bath. Club rooms include slippers and bath robes which are very nice and make for a very relaxing trip.

The afternoon we arrived, we went down to the pool area which is lovely. We were the only people there for about an hour and a half, we felt like millionaires in our own private pool. The facilities are amazing.

We ordered food through room service later on which was promptly delivered and was delicious.

The most impressive thing in my opinion is the breakfast, simply amazing. The staff are so friendly and attentive. A cooked breakfast to order with as much as you want as well as a help yourself buffet with all sorts of other breakfast foods. I'd stay there again even just for the breakfast.

The hotel is undergoing rennovations outside which makes parking difficult at times and the outside of the property looks a little disheveled whilst its being rennovated but this did not affect our enjoyment of the hotel.

The only other problem we had was with the water in the bathroom which was cloudy and hence undrinkable however bottled water is available free as far as I know.

Whilst it is quite expensive I would reccommend this hotel to anyone, its worth every penny in my opinion. We've had 2 throughly enjoyable trips and i'm sure we'll be returning at some point in the future, it can't come soon enough for me.

Loved the location and the people. The rooms? Meh.

"We stayed at the Ambleside Salutation for two nights in mid-November. The hotel's location is outstanding - right at the top of the charmng town of Ambleside. We left our car in the hotel's convenient carpark, and never took it out again until we departed. Restaurants, pubs, shopping and services are just outside the front door. Ambleside is also a great base for many glorious walks in and around some of the most beautiful countryside we've ever seen.

The hotel's lounge is comfortable and well staffed, and breakfast was excellent - both food and service. The common areas and dining rooms were immaculately clean.

Now, the room(s). The only standard room available at time of booking was in the Stock Ghyll Lodge, an annex of the hotel across the carpark from the main hotel and located above some shops. Not physically being in the main hotel was fine for us, however the standard room in the Lodge is quite small. So cozy in fact that we decided to upgrade to a club room for our second night. Aside from the size, the standard room itself was really quite cute - eaved ceilings, exposed beams and dormered casement windows. The bathroom, on the other hand, was horrible. Among other things, the tiles on the floor were so loose that they would actually detach from the floor and stick to your feet if you walked barefoot.

When we arranged to upgrade to a club room, the only one available was also in the Stock Ghyll Lodge, conveniently across the hall from our standard room (you should have seen the size of my suitcase). The room was much more spacious and was quite comfortable, however the bathroom was again in dire need of renovation. The finish on the outside of the bathtub was completely disintegrating at the top and the fixtures are quite dated.

We noticed that the hotel is renovating a building on the property to lucrative self-catering accommodations. Perhaps they should consider focusing some of that attention on the bathrooms in the Stock Ghyll Lodge.

All in all, we really liked the Ambleside Salutation and would probably stay here again, provided we stayed in the main hotel. The bathrooms alone would prevent us from booking in to the Stock Ghyll Lodge again.

Management response from SueHutchison, 05 Dec 2006

Regarding the comments concerning the bathrooms I would like to advise that we are nearing the completion of refurbishing all the bathrooms in the hotel, and these are the last ones to do, which should be completed by February next year. Please refer to the comments from the previous but one reviewer - "bathrooms newly refurbished to a high standard"

Excellent facilites, good location

"We recently spent a weekend in one of the newly-refurbished Club rooms (the Fairfield) on the first floor of the hotel. It was quiet, of reasonable size, and had a sitting area and jacuzzi bathroom. There was also a large balcony, from which we would have enjoyed the view if it had not been raining! Our only criticism was that the bed was no wider than a standard double. Bathrobes and slippers are provided in all the Club rooms, and an iron and ironing board are located in the Laundry Room, for general use.

The hotel’s public facilities are excellent, particularly the large swimming pool, and the central location in Ambleside makes walking around this delightful town very easy. On-site parking also seems to have been improved recently, with space for six or seven vehicles immediately outside the hotel’s restaurant.

The breakfasts offered a wide choice of good food in pleasant surroundings, but the atmosphere was somewhat spoiled by a quirky waiter, with a loud cliché for every occasion. It has to be said, however, that the staff were most helpful and friendly during our stay, and we would not hesitate to return to the Salutation.

For eating out, we particularly enjoyed meals at Zeffirelli’s (Italian vegetarian) and Lucy’s on a Plate (wide selection of dishes, in large portions!). Zeffirelli’s has four cinemas, and offers a package comprising two-course dinner + film.

great hotel, friendly staff, superb food, perfect location

"we stayed at the salutation for 4 nights, and were very impressed with the location, staff, restaurant & facilities.

Currently the hotel is undergoing a facelift on a grand scale but this hardly effects the runing of the hotel. the rooms are comfortable and fresh, the bathroom was newly refurbished to a high standard with a jacuzzi bath...! and a power shower.

the breakfast choice from the buffett and evening meals are worthy of a higher price, simply excelent, just what you need for a day on the fells.

If i could pick fault it would be the room was slightly small, that would be the only comment on the hotel, the parking is tight but as the hotel is undergoing extensive renovation this is to be expected.

Very nice hotel with pool, good location.

"This hotel is right in the heart of Ambleside and so is very handy. There is a very small car park, which takes a bit of nifty shuffling to get in and out of when busy!

The hotel is well-maintained and has a nice bar area. The room sizes vary depending on what you've booked. We were upgraded to a jacuzzi room, which was great! In general, the rooms are a good standard and well furnished.

The new pool and jacuzzi are lovely and a very relaxing way to recover after a long day's walk!

Being able to walk into Ambleside is very convenient, especially in the evening. There is even a very good Thai restaurant, practically on the doorstep!

Thoroughly recommended.

Excellent pool, great waiting staff

"Lovely time at the Salutation- just stayed the one night but loved the amazing brand new pool (very good size), jacuzzi bath in the en-suite, and the polite and very pleasant breakfast waiting staff. We thought it was a good value for money hotel, which is right in the heart of Ambleside-perfect base for exploring. Would definitely go there again."

We have just returned from a weekend...

"We have just returned from a weekend break from the above hotel. It was a very good hotel. It was spotlessly clean from the hotel rooms to the spa area and dining areas.

The breakfasts are wonderful and you really could eat what you wanted. Added bonus was that one of the waiters was extremely funny.

The hotel bar was very pleasant, we didn’t sample the evening food but other guests says it was very nice.

The spa area which i gather was a fairly new addition was fabulous, very relaxing, towels were provided and excellent changing facilities.

The room we had was an upgraded suite and it was worth that bit extra, Jacuzzi bath, bathrobes and slippers were very welcome.

Would definitely visit again.
