seen the website and was impressed seen the hotel and thought it would be perfect for a weekend away with my partner which turned into a get out of room asap and go around town. really avoid room 310 unless one of you is a midget that sleeps on the left side of the bed... more

Firstly I have given it a 1 rating as there is no -0 This hotel was bad in every way I was there for 1 night and that was a struggle I hade to climb 3 double flights of stairs as the lift was broken.(there were elderly guests there dont know how they managed) The room was... more

Firstly I had to give the rating a 1 it wouldn't let me enter 0. My family stayed here for one night and one night was too much. The room 302 was totally disgusting, there was a dirty used plaster stuck to the bathroom wall - been there a while, the grout around the bath... more

My husband and I booked this hotel for a three night break - but only stayed for one. We had been attracted by the price, the advertising, and the polite and friendly manner of the receptionist when I rang the hotel prior to our visit. Unfortunately no amount of goodwill on... more

The County Hotel states it is a luxurious spacious hotel with modern accomodation. My partner and I visited in July (currently writing it in the room now!). The room was very drab, in need of a full revamp, the carpets are worn and becoming bare. The woolpaper is marked... more

Spiders on sentry!
Stayed here overnight which was long enough. Grubby, threadbare furniture and carpets. Dank, fusty smell in the room. A tea stained kettle with broken lid. Grease marked pillowcase. Dirt which could be collected into a pile. Chipped bathroom sink. But worst of all spiders which were on sentry duty outside our bedroom door and ran up and down a cobweb stretched from ceiling to floor in greeting whenever we approached. Need I say more........
Management response from botchergate

I read with dismay this review of the County Hotel. Although we are an old hotel with a lot of history we pride ourselves on keeping a clean well run establishment. None of these people mentioned their problems to any of our staff and i'm sure that if the hotel was as bad as they made out they would not have stayed with us at all there are pleanty of other hotels in the area. We are in the process of refurbishing the hotel and would advise any others reading these reviews to check other review pages where our reviews are more in line with the hotels policy of being a clean well run friendly establishment which the majority of our guests visit time and again. I think it is very easy to review a hotel like this, its seems to me that its a cowards way out to say nothing to the hotel staff but log on to a review page and write such anonomous rubbish without proof or giving the hotel a chance to improve things during their stay.

Oh My God!
stayed here for a week on a business trip. this is the most repulsive hotel i have stayed in and it had a cheek to charge £55 per night. the decor is dated, grim and dirty and then you get to the room. the headboard was lying next to the bed, the windows didnt open and i doubt the room had been hoovered or dusted in years. breakfast was a depressing affair of paying for a miniture bowl of fruit and fibre as the cooked breakfast looked far from appertising, the waiting staff didnt speak any english apart from tea or... more
Historic Dirt!
A simple vacuuming of the carpet would have helped. Old does not HAVE to be dirty! The bed however was so old that I could feel and HEAR the springs (BOING!) We were with a tour group and I guess this town was the best stopping point. I felt like I was transported into the Industrial Revolution!
Dreadful
Hotel is dirty, disorganised and we would not stay again. The staff were pleasant but run off their feet and not enough of them to deal with the number of guests staying. We waited so long for breakfast that we ended up going without. The hotel had completely run out of eggs for breakfast and we stuggled to find a table that wasn't piled high with dirty crockery. It is unbelievable that National Coaches, who ran the tour, use this hotel. It is enough to put us off another tour with National. To top it all, we didn't get any... more
Not Fussed
The hotel was central but oh my god, it was so dated! The dust in our room anyway was about an inch thick! NO LIE! I rubbed my finger on the socket and a great lump of dust came off! The TV was bad my room was front of hotel and the noise all night long from the revellers on the street. Whatever happened to double glazing? you could almost taste the dust in the air! The price of the room for a night is totally way out for the value.Even the quality of meat in the breakfast did not taste right. In saying all of that during the day the... more
To be avoided
We stayed here for one night as a last minute weekend away - we arrived at the hotel and were made to feel like we had caused a huge inconvenience by booking only the day before and by arriving just after check in time. The room itself was pretty grim - the lock fell off the bathroom door, the windows would not stay closed, meaning we were kept awake by the nightclubs across the road, and the decor was generally pretty shabby. Cigarette wrappers lying on the stairs when we arrived were still there the next morning. There were piles of... more
Dreadful
Stayed at the County hotel, Carlisle 5th August 2005 for a one night stopover with Grand UK Coach Holidays. Our room was very dirty, (we found a black sock under the chair) and the net curtains in the bathroom were disgustingly filthy. Bath mat very badly stained and the toilet seat was wonky when you sat on it. However, the plumbing was good! Another member of our party had no pillow cases on the bed, so the rooms had obviously not been cleaned or checked before our arrival. Duty Manager on that day not very welcoming or helpful.... more
loved the county
Having read the earlier review I arrived at the hotel on a coach tour with some trepidation. This however was totally unfounded. The hotel was a typical old design town centre hotel. The hotel was central for the city centre. Its staff were all friendly and courteous and the rooms were well appointed with beatiful fluffy towels, more than adequate toiletries and were well cleaned. Our meals were served in a seperate dining area to keep our party together The waitress service was efficient and well organised. The menu was varied and the food... more
Awful
Stayed at the County Hotel, Carlise, 12th February 2005, for one night, with Coach Style Tours. Hotel rooms were very dirty, for example, crumbs and bits all over the carpet, splashes of dirt all over the mirrors, remote control so unclean it had fungus growing on it, and even the light switch had stains on it which looked revolting. Most people on the tour had complained about the cleanliness of the hotel and this was not just a one off complaint. Hotel obviously in need of a refurbishment, furniture old and outdated, even the... more
Just above average
I would actually give it 3.5 stars, doesn't deserve four, but three doesn't give it's location any credit. It's basically 50 yrds from the train station, 20 yards from some great bars and the multiplex cinema is just 30 yards. The hotel itself is ok but my room smelt stale, average room, but bad old springy bed. Room £45 but brecky extra £7.50 so not to bad for a central hotel. Because the room is very central expect traffic to wake you early. The IBIS hotel is only 50 yards away and though it's not got much... more
