Skiddaw Hotel

There was a lot of refurb still going on - but its looking good. It did not affect our stay at all and the friendly staff made it very special for us during our anniversry weeekend. Keswick is a great town and the Skiddaw has prime location on the pretty market square.

Stayed here because of a function we attended.Had the function in 'The Greta Suite' and it was superb. Choice of meals was good, entertainment good and the staff were excellent. Rooms were under repair till end of February but surprisingly it didnt affect us. Would stay here again especially with the specials breaks they advertise. My wife loved the place and there is a market on Saturday just a stones throw from the hotel.

stayed here just after new year this year and had a wonderful stay. The bedroom was a summit room, about average in size but still very nice. Our room was front facing the market square and serviced by the friendly housekeepers to immaculate condition and cleanliness. In fact all the staff were always willing to help. Food was great, parking could be better but you get given a permit on arrival that lets you park in the huge public car park at the back for free. the only complaint about this hotel would be the noise from market square... more

My husband was in the area for business and i decided to join him with my son. From the start I did not enjoy the stay! Firstly receptionist could not find the key to our room, but rather than telling us this she dissapeared from behind the desk, the manager returned with her and they both looked rather worried. My wife and I stayed for 3 nights. There were improvements being carried out and it was noticeable , as the workmen were seen and heard around our room. Parking is very poor. The 4 parking places were used by the workmen and a skip. That meant parking in the public parking area which is behind the hotel. This was my first sole trip to the Lakes so I wanted a hotel that provided everything. Personal service is everthing at this hotel, from the receptionist recognising me when ever I passed to the restaurant staff really making sure I was well looked after - especially being a lone woman. The location is perfect, however as the street outside is now a no go area for traffic you are advised to park in the public car parks and check in. We have just returned from a 3day `Booster Break` (16th to 18th Feb 05). Having previously stayed at the Kings Arms Hotel (nxt door) we thought we would try the Skiddaw Hotel and we were not dissapointed. The hotel is head and shoulders above the Kings (although good in its own right, see my review under Walkers Hotel), the skiddaw deserves its 3 star rating. We thought the Skiddaw looked very nice from the outside, and were tempted in by the promise of dressing gowns and free mineral water in the superior rooms. On being told the price we decided to look at the room before we took it, and I am very glad that we did. The lobby area felt very grand, but the corridor leading to the room had a distinct 1970s feel to it. Hi. My family and I stayed here for 4 days and I can honestly say it was brilliant. The staff were incredibly friendly and the hotel made you feel like you were at home. The shops in the square are great and cheap but not tacky! Lovely scenery in the Lake district. The food is superb and you get loads and loads. The sauna and steam room are relaxing as is the atmosphere of the area of Keswick. There is a swimming pool in the near by hotel which you can use for free and it is very nice. I went for the Christmas 3-day all-in food package, 2001. I can honestly say that the food was as good as any I have eaten anywhere in the world ever. I had one portion of gratin dauphinois (sorry, don't know what this is called in English) that was a wee touch underdone but everything else on the comprehensive menu was absolutely perfect.
