" Great value for money. Bulgaria is so... "

Great value for money. Bulgaria is so cheap and a really nice resort. This hotel was great as it is right on the beach.

It has a beautiful large pool with plenty of room to soak up the sun and relax.

The room was good. We had an apartment that had a separate bedroom and sitting area, and also a kitchenette and dining table. It was well furnished with a nice balcony.

There are restaurants and bars nearby to venture out to day and night. We had a really great time.

" We visited the Excelisor Hotel last... "

We visited the Excelisor Hotel last August - overall the holiday was brilliant, on first impression there were a lot of ladies of the night in Golden sands and I'm glad we didn't have children - but the night life was brilliant a lot to do and lots of pubs to visit.

The hotel we stayed in mainly consisted of german speaking visitors but the entertainment in the hotel catered for a number of languages which was nice - food was really nice and we had something different everyday.

" We went as a family holiday 2 adults... "

We went as a family holiday 2 adults and 5 children. This is not really for English families. The food was great and the local lagers and wines were fine. But the hotel was based around Germans.

I only met 3 families that where English in our hotel. The cleaning staff where rude and after spilling juice on the bed sheets had to pay 75 lev to replace them! The hotel had a bad atmosphere. The reception may as well not have been there hardly any of them spoke English and where ignorant. The bar staff where decent though and pleasant.

It is definitely not a family hotel German women got changed beside the pool and walked around wearing nothing and sunbathed naked! and with my children’s age ranging from 7-16 this wasn’t ideal and could only use the pools over at the other hotel, which we were booked into but they where over booked and moved over to this hotel.

I would not recommend this hotel!

2 Adults, 2 Children, 13 and 6 year old, girls.

We booked this holiday very last minute, just a week before we travelled, and 2 weeks AI came to £1300, so was a bit apprehensive as to what we would get!

Beware taxi drivers at the airport, I would strongly recommend transfers. Getting to the resort was 120 lev, app £35, returning to the airport 20 lev, less than £8!

The resort of Golden Sands is a bit strange, it’s a dedicated resort, closed during the off peak season, and hence we didn’t really experience the country as I would have liked. It was, however, the cheapest place I have ever been to!

The year before, we spent 2 weeks in Alcudia, Majorca, and found it to be quite expensive. I had read that Bulgaria was a cheap destination, but I was unprepared for how inexpensive it turned out to be.

The food in the hotel was, frankly, inedible. It was catered entirely for Germans, which is understandable considering they have been holidaying there for years, but the kids couldn’t eat there, and my wife took 4 days to find a beach side bar that served a hot cup of tea!

The staff were ok, but I did feel for them at times, as it was mostly East Germans who stayed at the hotel, and they don’t understand the concept of queuing, manners, basic decency!

A good tip is to do just that, tip! Even 2 lev, which was at the time about 80p, brought you great service in the hotel, in the second week I tipped the head barman 10 lev, about 4 quid, and every time I approached the bar my drinks were ready!

We met some wonderful people there, from all corners of the UK and even Holland, and that made the holiday worthwhile. The weather was a bit poor, and when it rains in Golden Sands, if you have kids it’s a struggle.

The Red Lion bar was fantastic, food okay and we ended up breakfasting there most days. There is the usual McDonalds on the beach, hate to admit it but we did dine there once or twice, just to make sure the kids didn’t starve!

Varna was a lovely, historic city, but I did get conned by the street hawkers, and I encountered trouble using the Cash Machines in GS itself. My own fault for not informing Barclays I was travelling, but after id rang and told them, you would have thought they would have let me use my card! Mobile phone bill for calls to Barclays alone was £80+, all reimbursed on return.

In all, it’s a nice place, but in my opinion better for couples than families, but this may be because it was end of season when we travelled. We did dine in the Chinese Restaurant on the main strip, and the bill for 4 adults, 4 children was less than £30 pounds incl drinks. Fantastic value for money.

In 2 weeks we spent less than £1000, and the kids had everything they asked for, and when you travel on a budget, being able to do that for your kids is the best feeling.

There is the infamous red light district, but as previously mentioned on this site, if you are in a couple they tend to leave you alone, although my wife and a friend we met used to push us both together and see our reactions as two big lads were accosted from all sides whilst they giggled behind!!

I will not be returning, I fancy trying Sunny Beach, the biggest problem was food and rude Germans, but if they were at Rhyl they might go back home saying the same!!

" We stayed over the road from the... "

We stayed over the road from the Excelsior at its sister hotel. You share swimming pools and facilities.

We booked a last minute deal for all inclusive with Balkan holidays.
I had such a great holiday there! The hotel was fabulous. Air con in rooms, clean and lovely. Towels always changed (sometimes into a swan and heart shapes) balcony overlooking sea and lovely swimming pools.

All the food and drink was included (bit too much meat) but good salads and so much food on offer - loved it! Didn’t mind it was a bit German orientated!
The all inclusive such good value - pint glasses of gin and tonic!

The resort was lovely, very, very cheap - cocktails for 80p and great beach and cafes. The hawkers annoy you but its not too bad.

Really, really want to go back - best hotel and best resort!
Cheap, cheap and cheaper!

" We (Fem 34 and Male 37) stayed in the... "

We (Fem 34 and Male 37) stayed in the Excelsior Hotel. The overall impression of the hotel was excellent, the room was of very good standard, and recently refurbished with air con, balcony, and lovely en-suite with shower and the towels were changed 6 days out of the 7 we were there. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, food was very good (although catered for the Germans) and I would give the hotel 9 out of 10.

The resort Golden Sands is being slowly built up so you need to ignore all the new hotels and apartments being built. There is a lovely beach and enough restaurants and bars to keep you filled up for years. Its very typical resort with women trying to get you to go to certain bars but you get used to it. The resort is so cheap that it’s very hard to spend your money there. I give Golden Sands 8 out of 10

" When I visited your resort with my... "

When I visited your resort with my family we were really dreading it as we had heard lots of bad reviews from people who have already visited. But when we got there our first impressions were really good as we drove thought Varna to get to our hotel and it looked really good.

When we got to our hotel it had good customer service as the porter came out and helped us with our luggage.

The food wasn’t great as it was always cold and there was never enough variety of foods for children.

The entertainment and the children activities were great my children in my family said that the entertainers were great and very friendly.

We really enjoyed our 2 week stay and we are hoping to return to the hotel again next year!
