Gergana Beach Hotel Reviews
" I have only rated this hotel a 3... "
Submitted By: Mrs J BrownridgeNow for the main hotel! In no way would I fault the cleanliness of the hotel, every where was immaculate, our room was cleaned daily to high spec by a wonderful team of Bulgarian ladies. They were extremely friendly and couldn't do enough for you, which was not always the case with the rest of the staff. The reception staff were some of the rudest people I have ever come across, in no way were they helpful. The bar staff were very miserable people who I never once saw smile!
Apart from the above paragraphs the resort of Albena is nice, if what you are looking for is a relaxing beach based holiday, everywhere is spotless, there was not a piece of litter in sight. During the evenings there isn't much to do locally but you can go into the resort centre, which has a variety of bars and restaurants. Definitely go to Poco Loco, the food is amazing and the staff put on a brilliant night with singing and dancing.
Getting around Albena is very easy, from the hotel you can get the 'Noddy Train' into the centre every 20 minutes, and it costs 2 lev for adults and 1 lev for children. There is also a couple of taxis based outside, they charge 5 lev into the resort centre and 70 lev for a return trip to Varna. For a more relaxed look around Albena go by horse and cart, normally charged at 25 lev.
The beach, in a great location from the hotel, is beautiful, every evening and morning it's cleaned. Sunbeds and parasols are available to hire, 2 sunbeds with mattresses, a parasol and small table cost 19 lev for the whole day. There is also a small park area located on the beach for your children. From anywhere along the beach you can buy drinks and ice cream, all reasonably priced. There are also showers, provided you don't mind freezing water! Watersports are also available.
All in all Albena is a nice relaxing place to holiday but I can safely say I would not go back to Gergana!

Submitted By: Miss S HarrisWe were moved twice more and then forced to pay for all our phone calls to insurance companies and mobile phone companies and banks which came to over £50. The food was inedible and the staff were miserable and unhelpful. Our whole holiday was ruined but perhaps if someone had just helped us out we wouldn’t have hated it so much but no one wanted to know. DO not go!

Submitted By: Mr K JonesSky TV was in German...no one told us, silly of me to expect it to be in English?
Pool in need of maintenance. Entertainment virtually non existent, same annoying thing every day. Food very boring, same sort of food everywhere we went. They throw sweaty sock cheese over everything.
The resort as a whole was one big rip off. It was a chore trying to pay your bill, it was very rarely right. Also very expensive. Outside the resort was very cheap. (a third of the price).
That’s about it. Won’t be recommending or going there again.

Submitted By: Mrs S FolgateFood:- contrary to some of the reports we have read the food was excellent. We had booked for bed and breakfast but ended up eating dinner there most nights. For the varied and tasty choice and first class service from the waiting staff it was very reasonably priced at 12 levs for adults and 6 levs for children. There were 2 evening meal sittings: -17:30 - 19:00 and 19:30 - 21:00. The cocktails at the pool bar were a bit hit and miss.
Location:- We would definitely choose this hotel again for the location as it is just slightly away from the main (noisier) part of Albena, which you can either have a leisurely stroll to in 10-15 mins, or get a taxi to for 10 lev or hop on the dotto train for 2 levs. Excellent for young families.
Hotel:- Although very clean, the rooms are a bit cramped if there are 2 adults and 2 children and the pillows are lumpy. It is advertised with Sat TV, however only BBC world news, which is fine as you do not tend to go on holiday to watch the TV, however it would have been handy when it poured with rain one day and evening to have the option of a few more English channels. The reception staff and the First Choice rep were very friendly and helpful. Worth noting that there is a cash point machine in the hotel lobby if you run short of money and you can draw up to 400 lev twice a day.
Excursions - would recommend the jeep safari (remember to take your water pistols!) and the wine tasting in Varna.
Entertainment - 1 week cycle of evening entertainment only and then repeated - bit disappointing.

Submitted By: Miss C DriffillAlbena itself is nice and quiet with no litter or graffiti. It does, however, have several bars only ten minutes walk away in the centre which has something to cater for everyone. If you can't manage the walk you can travel on either a horse and cart for around 20 lev (approx £8) or on the little train for 2 lev (around 80p!)
The food was amazing, we tried somewhere different every night and didn't have one bad meal. The Kavarma Kebap and Gondola dishes are highly recommended. All the local people are very friendly and most have excellent command of English.
The cost of food and drink was slightly more expensive than we thought it would be but was still a lot cheaper than back home and more than worth every penny.
The only down side we could find with the entire week was that you have to pay 0.5 lev to go to the toilet, even in the bars where you are drinking!
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would definitely recommend the resort and the hotel to everyone.

Submitted By: Mrs J CumminsYou could eat your evening meal (buffet style) for 12 lev but when we ate in went to pool side restaurant as had some very nice meals on menu (lots of salads, fish, bulgarian dishes as well as burgers).
The staff were great, very friendly and helpful, I think if you treat someone well it is repaid in kindness. Great rep. always there to help. Would we go again - YES

Submitted By: Miss LR RandallWhen we arrived, we were taken to our hotel by a First Choice coach which was very efficient. However when we arrived and were allocated our room I was not very impressed by the room itself. As we arrived at night we were both tired and not really being very optimistic but if you are expecting comfortable pillows then think again. The rooms look like there are going to be insects but throughout the holiday there were not as many as expected and the room grew on me.
The hotel itself was relatively clean overall and furnished well. The pool area was very nice, the beach being right on the door front was also handy. There are fantastic views of the sea from the room however we were one of the 7 rooms who had a view of the roof!
The entertainment team tried hard but were not very successful with the adults however the mini club seemed to run well. The pool is very cold but due to the heat it was much appreciated.
My main complaint overall was the food. I have lost so much weight on my return from eating practically nothing and I felt continuously sick throughout. My boyfriend also suffered from an upset stomach towards the end of the week. The food was just the same in every restaurant and really were not up to scratch.
The day times were pretty satisfactory but if you are expecting a good night out, gergana beach really is not for you. Some more points are, when you have the choice to book excursions I recommend the jeep safari and the yacht picnic.
Enjoy your holidays!

Submitted By: Mrs S DonovanThe resort area is pretty small, and in the second week can get a bit same old/same old. But there is a cheap and handy bus system on the resort, and we took some day trips to Varna and Dobrich, which I would highly recommend. The shopping is great and you get a much better idea of the real Bulgaria, especially in Dobrich. The prices in Albena are about three times higher than the prices in other resorts, because Albena is privately owned. The value was still good compared to home, but it is a bit annoying knowing you are being charged up the hole. For example, a local beer in Albena was 3 lv, but anywhere outside Albena was between 1.20 - 1.60 lv. Pizza in Albena is 8 or 9 lv, elsewhere 2 or 3 lv.
We flew in and out of Bourgas, and the Bourgas airport stinks, so fly into Varna if you can. The queues for passport control were unreal, there's no air conditioning, and not enough seats so people had to sit on dirty floors, yuck!
Overall, we had a great time and were pleasantly surprised. Albena is a great place for families, and a great place to relax. The atmosphere is very polite and laid back. Try it!

Submitted By: Mr I FordeResort was safe but somewhat overcrowded with bars making them quarter full at the best of times. Hotel was average with small but clean rooms again watch for hidden costs like internet (which is impossible to get on due to kids being allowed to play games on them for 6 hours at a time) and safety deposits (£10 for the week).
My Main gripe was my check out time of 12 noon and not being allowed to pay to keep room till 4 pm this resulted in a 9 hour wait in reception before departure without any explanation. All in all we were expecting a excellent holiday and got well below service from everyone except the housemaids we would never recommend Bulgaria to anyone we liked.

Submitted By: Mrs E SimpsonIf you go out of the hotel at the back on to the beach and turn to your right walk on past the nudist section there is guy selling trips half the price also if you continue walking you will come to another resort called l Kavarna after about 10mins. You can catch train to the resort centre after the walk.
This is the place the Bulgarians and Russians holiday and everything is half the price of Albena, a beer on the beach is 1 lev and a pizza 3. Albena is a nice safe family resort with lots going on, the Gergana was good as it was a little way out but still accessible, with a train to the resort centre

Submitted By: Miss M SmithThe hotel food was excellent. Although everything tasted a little 'different', there was a huge choice and we ate a ridiculous amount! I've read about people getting food poisoning, but we ate everything on offer and none of us got sick at all.
The beach and the pool area were also very nice, but we saw a few large jellyfish in the sea so we mainly stayed by the pool, where the sun beds and umbrellas were free. I don't think the jellyfish are harmful, but we were wimps! The pool was clean, and big, and there were children's areas, along with a lifeguard. The entertainment team hassle you quite a bit to join in with activities, but you don't have to if you don't fancy it. They also provide a variety of slightly odd shows in the evening, which gave us a laugh.
Albena is a fairly quiet resort, but has several bars, restaurants and shops in the centre. Gergana hotel is a little walk out of the main town but there is a road train costing about 70p per person which we used a lot. There is a shop at the hotel open until 11pm if you need to buy sun cream, snacks etc.
Albena is purely a tourist resort, with no Bulgarians actually living there. There are lots of German, Russian, French etc tourists, and sometimes the Bulgarian people find it hard to understand. It's probably worth learning a few words, although we managed to get by with no problems (Please = Molya, Thankyou = Blagodarya (Phonetic).
All in all, a fab holiday, with good food and good weather. Both Hotel Gergana and Albena are great places to stay, and First Choice were a good tour operator.

The best I have ever been on. Staff are extremely friendly. It is in a brilliant setting right by a nature reserve and a beach.
The nights there are brilliantly warm as well. There is a shop open till very late and an all night bar by reception as well as two more outdoors. The restaurant serves magnificent food and the restaurant beside the pool also does. Albena is also a great place. Another thing that is good is the nightlife.
The nightlife in the hotel is not to loud at all but if you like that kind of thing then Albena has good nightlife. First choice are a brilliant tour operator I seriously recommend them. The whole holiday was very cheap costing only £1062 from first choice. Whatever you want this hotel has it.
I seriously recommend it and I definitely will be going back. You have just got to go there!

Our hotel was very clean and it's location at the end of the resort, was fairly quiet although it was only a 10min walk to the centre of Albena or you could take the 'noddy train' for a couple of Levs, these ran from early to very late. The food was excellent and catered for all tastes.

BREAKFAST - continental meats/cheeses, cooked (eggs, bacon, sausages, eggy bread, beans etc), croissants/pain au chocolate (all warm and cooked freshly) fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals sand lots of breads/rolls butters and jams and fresh pancakes cooked to order.

DINNER - Soups, Salads, cold meats/cheeses, pasta / noodles, fish - each night had a choice of about 3/4 meats chicken / pork /gammon / veal / beef / turkey etc) and a carved meat, veg, potatoes (various), sauces, breads, about 12 deserts (incl ice-cream)& fresh fruit, cheese crackers.

There was also a children’s section just in case they didn't like the adult choices eg meatballs, chicken nuggets, chips etc. sausages etc. Eating out was also excellent and very cheap most restaurants/hotels had entertainment too. The hotel staff were friendly and the Animation team worked non-stop (entertainment staff).

The beach was very clean and safe for children and the hotel pool which the children and parents loved, kept very clean (lifeguards on patrol for both). The rooms were kept spotlessly clean although could do with a bit of up dating but comfortable non the less and had air conditioning & mini bar.

Albena was very nice, a long promenade ran along the front with restaurants/bars, gift shops, water sports, children’s entertainments (trampolines, water boats, etc)fruit shops etc. Albena town had lots of the above too and many craft stalls and shops, discos etc. Lots of places to visit nearby/far on excursions and reasonably priced.

Buses very cheap and taxis reasonable. All in all an excellent choice for a family - we’d definitely return again.
Submitted By: Mrs k JehuI would recommend going on the boat trip situated outside the hotel and I advise you to take a camera so you can take pictures of the amazing views and turtles. The night train up to the market is very interesting . The sea is lovely but be careful not to wander to far to the right of the hotel or you will end up on the nudist beach !! Other than that that the place is like a dream world !

The Gergana hotel itself was very nice, the only 2 things that annoyed me slightly about it was 1. The doorman took our suitcases 2 metres down the hall then expected a large tip and 2. We had a rather large stain, which wasn’t a nice colour or our sofa. Otherwise amazing, right on beach front, beaches were gorgeous so clear and clean, although rather windy at times twice the beach cleared of people because the wind got up high and it got rather chilly! The waves of the black sea are so massive, they went over my head and knocked me to the floor a few times, and I wouldn't recommend wearing sunglasses in the sea as a wave came and stole my partners!
food in the hotel is fantastic, we only has breakfast but I’ve never seen such a huge array of food, from cheese's and chillies to pancakes, cornflakes and pastries! All very nice! A word of warning though if you are frightened of birds like me the hotel restaurant isn't the place for you! The fly over your heads!
The pool looked good with lots of entertainment, although I never personally went in it.
The location is pretty good, its a good 20 min walk to the town, but there’s a Noddy train which stops outside the hotel every 20 mins and takes u rite into the centre for 2levs (70p). Albena itself is quite small but has a good amount of shops n bars. Lots of entertainment bars all with singers at night, dance bars, Irish bars, sports bars etc all with v nice food!
I would also recommend a trip to nessebar whilst there it’s an island (well joined now) off sunny beach, v interesting culture and streets. I would go back to Bulgaria, maybe to visit sunny beach where the wind is not so strong although I did go in September time. Hope this helped someone.
