Long winded detail, we booked well in advance to go to an all inclusive hotel in Albena resort on the Black sea coast of Bulgaria. Flying from Doncaster Airport to Varna airport with a 40 minute transfer to our hotel. With 2 weeks to go we received a letter from Balkan Holidays to say our arrival airport had been changed to Burgas with a 2.5 hour transfer time. This would not have been too much of a problem if the flight did not arrive at 11pm and that we were traveling with a 15 month old infant! Balkan Holidays offered no compensation for us to change hotel to ones nearer Bourgas which are more expensive or a full refund for us to cancel the whole holiday. We choose to stick with the original hotel and the 2.5 hour transfer, it was not much fun.
Albena Beach Hotel is not bad at all, it is not the most modern but it is reasonably comfortable and has all the amenities we needed (including a cot). We were particularly impressed with its location directly on the beach, which is clean soft white sand, and the very wide range of food. We expected a limited range of meat based dishes, in reality there was a very varied range of salads, vegetables, meat dishes and styles of food. And for those who drink wine, the free locally produced white and red were “very drinkable”.
Overall, if the experience with Balkan Holidays had not been so bad, this would have been a very enjoyable holiday.
