Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County

Spent a really nice bank holiday break here. The staff were really helpful and friendly which you don't always get from a big chain. Our room was in a small annex across the car park and was very spacious and quiet. Tip: the car park is always full so give your keys to reception and let them move it around when space becomes available.

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Court over the weekend of May 18th to 20th, on the special Bowes weekend package at a cost of £220. The hotel is centrally located about five minutes walk from the Cathedral. The Hotel was very easy to find, and despite the relatively small carpark we managed to get a car parking space, albeit the last one on both occassions. Good situation in the centre of Durham. Room was large and well kept. The hotel is a bit of a maze depending on which room you get. The atmosphere is olde-worldy but with a modern efficient attitude. The staff were fantastic and always went the extra step to help you. Food and bar were good. Room had a nice view over the river.

Have stayed here twice, most recently in December a couple of days after Christmas. Such a beautiful hotel - has an 'olde worlde' feel to it but not tatty or seen better days - you just feel like you're in a very special hotel! For the first of our visits, with our son, we were given a super room - very spacious, with two double beds, good size bathroom and its own sitting area. We have just spent a weekend in this hotel and were very happy with it. The room was great, a nice view over the river. I had requested a king size bed and it was enoumous, 7 feet wide! Very comfortable with lots of pillows. The leisure centre was well above average, very nicely designed pool, sauna, steam room etc. As usual with Marriott, the pool water was a pleasant 30C so no problem getting in. Dropped into the Hotel on spec, and stayed for 2 nights. Nice up-market hotel, right in the middle of town, and reasonable rates. The fire alarm kept going off on 3 occasions on our first night, over about a 40 minute period at about 02:00 onwards. Very disconcerting, and took some tracking down as to what it was when we rang reception. A few mumbled explanations about computer-generated timing being out of whack with the alarm test, but nothing further in the way of an apology, or rebate/discount. Nevertheless, very helpful... more
