Despite being told that there was disabled parking there was none. We parked in the Loading Bay on our first night and viewed the prospect of parking anywhere near the hotel as very unlikely. Fortunately we managed to get a space in the tiny car park (shared with other... more

I have wanted to stay at the Grand for over 40 years. Our local Fish and Chip shop has a wall size picture of Scarborough bay and the Grand Hotel, on its wall. Well we finally made it. We had to pay the bill before we even saw our room, which incidently cost as much for 3... more

I had the misfortune to stay at the Grand in June for one night as part of a group of 10. I arrived at the hotel and joined a queue of at least 50 people at the desk to be told that I had no reservation despite having the confirmation with me. The staff were very unhelpful... more

Just a quick review to say we had an excellent stay at the Grand. Booked 2 Turret Suites at £80 each DBB. Rooms were clean with fantastic sea views. Each suite had a double bedroom and a twin, ideal for families if you can manage the extra stairs to the turret. As this... more

Booked a twin room which was very small but clean and warm. Great view of the sea and easy access to town and beach. Staff friendly but firm. Not totally happy with buffet service at meal time as there was a bit of pushing and bad manners from the diners. Food hot, in an... more

A little piece of history
Booked in to this hotel with my sister for a short weekend break, after reading the reviews I thought I migt have made a mistake but our trip turned out to be a most pleasent stay. Yes the room was in need of modernisation but if you want perfection try travel lodge etc.. our room was large, clean and the view, yes the windows did need a clean but what do you expect mid April 50 yards from th North Sea, was outstanding. The food was well O.k but you get what you pay for. as for the evening entertainment, this was first class and more, the group put their heart and sole into it and were very profesional, we would have paid £30 + to see this at a cabaret club. The Building is magnificent and it is well worth exploring the upper floors. Well done to all the staff, they were clean pleasant and helpfull, enjoy it now as unless careful updating is carried out the atmospheare could be spoilt, yes we will be going back again and I would recomend it to anyone.
Basil!!!!!!!!!!Mr Fawlty and family are alive and well in Scarborough!
Stayed at The Grand Hotel with my partner Lucie in April 2005. We booked at The Grand because, to be honest the deal we got meant it was much cheaper than many of the surrounding establishments. To be fair, you get what you pay for. The reception staff were polite and we checked in without a problem. Parking is a bit of a nightmare, very similar to musical chairs with cars. Basically, a person is spotted vacating a space, which is followed by an almighty scramble as 8 cars race round the block to be first there. (Sad to say I found this quite enjoyable!!!!!!) Hotel rooms however leave a little to be desired. They were clean I have to say, however, a wardrobe that tilted at around 15 degrees from vertical, a fully collapsible dressing table, walls and skirting boards not painted since jack was a lad and windows so dirty it looked cloudy outside!!! mean the best I can give is 2 out of 5. We never took the opportunity of dining in the hotel as we had arranged to eat out so I can’t comment on the food. As someone who works in architecture I would like to say the building itself is superb, hopefully Britannia, the new owners will invest some time and money as it has the potential to be a fantastic hotel. One final thing, if you are allocated room 17 and somehow contrive to lock yourself out. You will be pleased to know there is a gap under the door a small person can slide under!!!!!!!!!!!! P.S the title of this review maybe a little unfair but I could'nt help it!
Enjoyed a relaxing short break at The Grand
Stayed for two nights with our three children. Great location with a good sea view of the bay from our rooms. Easy access to shops and restaurants and a good base for visits to Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay. No problems parking at the front of the hotel but Pay and Display only. The room was clean and comfortable. Despite the very grand staircase and lovely historic feel to it, the hotel does need to be refurbished/updated. Children were made to feel welcome and breakfast was good. I understand that the Britannia have taken over the hotel faily recently and lets hope we see some improvements in standards soon. This could be a fantastic hotel.
Grand Hotel, it needs re-naming its a health hazard
Arrived on the Monday at 2 pm accommadation was ready and it was filthy the windows were covered in dirt and someone previous had wrote in the grime clean me and it had been ignored. The food i would not give to a dog never mind a human it was worse than a school dinner 20 years ago had to eat out morning noon and night. The staff were dirty and had never seen an iron or a shampoo. The parking is £4.50 Per Day and you can not park anywhere near the hotel as it is pay and display everywhere. No handrail on the steps outside and the disabled ramp is to steep and you need a push to help you get up it im 25 and i found it steep with a wheelchair and a frame. We left after the 2nd day as the shower screen in the disabled bathroom fell on top of my Grandma tyhankfully she wasnt badly hurt although it was glass and could of easily done real damage. THE HOTEL IS A DUMP AND HEALTH HAZARD AND SHOULD BE CLOSED DOWN ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
The House of Horror!!
My mother-in-law had always from a small child wanted to stay at the Grand, so for a special treat booked a party of family into the hotel for the weekend to celebrate her 70th Birthday. My God what a mistake! We had read the reviews and made the unfortunate mistake of not cancelling! It lived up to all the poor reviews I read. It was simply quite awful! One review I read was spot on - this is an old peoples home but I felt so disappointed that they feel they can treat the people in their care so disgracefully! The only way to enjoy this hotel is if you have very low standards!
At your own risk!
Stayed here recenty, I think that they should be done under the trade discriptons act, Grand, nothing grand about it. We were put on the 6th floor and told we had a recently refurbished room! If recent was 1920! The room had stained carpets, a smell of dead people and holes in the bed linen. We had a hot water pipe running through the room which made it about 100 degrees and the sea view window was about a foot square and seven feet up!! The floor was uneven and the furnishings were broken, stained and dirty! The food was cheap and how they burned the sausages on the outside and had them pink in the middle ( without the use of a BBQ) I have no idea. The reception staff were impolite and made everything feel like they were doing you a favour. Awful, will have nightmares for years to come!
Hotel from Hell
This hotel should be an old peoples Home!!. The food was terrible cant believe we werent ill, staff were very unfriendly to say the least!, and to top it all off my niece had her mobile phone stolen. I think this hotel would have been fantantic about forty years ago but now needs pulling down.
Enjoyable holiday spent here
I have made 6 trips to the Grand hotel and have had a relaxing enjoable holiday on each occassion. I love the character of the hotel. The staff are all friendly and will do there upmost to help you with any queries or requests you may have. The entertainment is of a high quality and is as good as any you would pay to see at the local theatres. The last visit was a little disappointing compared to previous years but I understand that the hotel was in the transitional period of being taken over by Britannia hotels. The hotel now welcomes children which to my mind is a bit of a drawback and has changed the holiday atmosphere. On the whole I would recommend the Grand if you are looking for somewhere to relax and feel comfortable to do whatever you please.
Had a good stay here
Having read the reviews before we went, we were a bit concerned about what would greet us on our arrival. Yes, the hotel has definitely seen better days - and could do with a refurbishment programme - but, the rooms were good, very clean and the staff were most helpful. We enjoyed our stay.
excellent all round
Stayed at the Grand 11th and 12th Feb 2005 and really enjoyed it. Friendly staff, large clean room with a seaview (contrary to BBC tv prog )excellent food and first class entertainment. The bar prices were a bit steep but then you don't have to drink there. Yes some of the carpets and decor are a bit tatty but it is a beautiful old hotel and is being refurbished. I would recommend it to anyone and will definitely stay there again.
