Depending upon your outlook on being away from home I am either lucky of unlucky to spend most weekends in hotels due to work.
It does mean that I have stayed in, literally, hundreds of different hotels over the years in all corners of the world.
I can say, without doubt, The Grand Hotel at Scarborough is the most disgusting, dirty, squalid, unwelcoming and filthy dump served by staff who are surely competing for the title of 'Who Can Be The Rudest Member Of Staff'. Had any of them spoken to me the way I heard them speak and swear at two ladies of pension age, I would have smacked them in the mouth and taken the consequences (I am a 45 year old male, by the way).
Food - cold, inedible piles of stodgy crap that wouldn't be served in the worst prison in Thailand
Tea - cold and stewed....so I tried the coffee instead - cold and tasted bitter/burnt
Bedroom - no windows...yes I did say NO WINDOWS! Bed was covered by things masquerading as sheets, but were stain ridden
Carpets - so filthy your shoes stick to them as you walk
Corridors - have an awful damp and 'fusty' smell
Beds - I have flea bites on me
Car parking - non existent
I could go on and on but if you still choose to stay there after this review (and the countless others I have read on here....by the way, why oh why didn't I read these before I went?!!?) then it's your own fault for going. You have been warned!
Grand Hotel?? More like a grand pile of crap.
Steer clear at all costs...
You may be asking yourself....did I complain? Oh yes I did. After I had queued behind averyone else complaining. And the outcome??...'What do you expect me to do about it?' was the best answer the staff could come up with.
Brittania Hotel Group - you have a SERIOUS problem on your hands. I would have rated this hole as zero but this website doesn't allow a score of less than one.

Positives
The younger staff where full of charm and positivity the older ones [however] seemed quite care-less and flippant (I was later to find that this was the mindset of the whole of Scarborough; with the elders). There was plenty of breakfast food and nicely prepared. Our room [502, the Gordon Suite] had a lovely view and we could go out on the veranda for a lovely view and a breath of fresh air. Our personal dining room and living quarters was very adequate and relaxing. My same sex partner didn’t understand what the bags were for on the cistern! All in all we had a lovely time.
Negatives
The hotel needed some TLC with its’ dirty nets in the corridors. And the room we were staying in needed some repairs doing to the damp damaged wallpaper over the radiator, bath and trouser press. The swimming pool was being repaired which was acceptable as it was ready the next day. But the changing room lockers were rusty and had no keys. And the steam rooms had created a lot of damage to the building; quite frankly I think they should get rid of them, unless they can keep up with the damage that they cause. We did expect complimentary toothpaste and shaving gel which wasn’t supplied. The bars expectations [dress and behaviour code] were too grand for the place and left it empty an unpopular. There was a wardrobe knob missing.

Parking spaces are VERY hard to get near the hotel as the area is full of hotels all competing for VERY limited spaces.
With their 'discounted' parking card it costs a MINIMUM of £6 a day.
The fire alarm went off four or five times in our week with little or no explanation. Very worrying at 1am when you're on the fifth floor. Trust me!
Some rooms have NO windows. Seriously!!
Waiting for one of the two lifts can take a very long time if you are unable to take the stairs.
Some of the staff are absolute morons. Very rude and with serious social/attitude problems. A few could not be more helpful.
The cleaner did not service our room every day, resulting in us chasing up towels and toilet rolls.
The hotel itself remains wonderfully beautiful and atmospheric and were it not for the inhabitants claiming to be staff, could be amazing.

We are 60 plus, when l entered our room it had empty Larger cans and empty coke cans still in the bin, the tap in the bathroom was falling off the basin.
Meals cold l felt these meals not suitable for people of my age, cups of tea cold and stewed, breakfast was no different to dinner, bacon stuck together in piles of rashers everything cold, oh just for once the tea was hot at breakfast.
Lots of people complaining re food etc but no one putting pen to paper (l did)
This is a hotel l will never stay in again, when walking along the corridor you could be fooled into thinking you could be on ship, but the ships l have travelled on dont list as much as this place.

The hotel needs millions thrown at it. It is run down, the staff disinterested at best and the food so awful that it made you want to rush out and buy food elsewhere.
Our room had a broken, leaking shower. My companions could not open their window and their TV did not work. The staff seemed not to care and it was the most frustrating two days of my life.
4 star?? No way - it is an expensive and large dump of a place and I would not stay there again if you PAID me!
Do not stay there - you have been warned!!

Lovely hotel, bags of character & steeped in history. We had a room with a side sea view & spa bath. Spotlessly clean. Fresh towels daily. Food was fine. The rudeness & intolerance of some of the older guests good have spoiled our stay - but it didn't!! We will definitely return. Great value for money, If you want 5* accomodation & food, then pay 5* prices. Thankyou everyone at the Grand. Great holiday.

This hotel has over 30 windowless rooms in what used to be the cellars - horribly claustraphobic - with noisy air conditioning - NOT to be recommended! It's also full of coach loads of pensioners - not a family in sight. The breakfast was self-serve - akin to Butlins for the aged - and the big dish of scrambled egg looked like a vat of sick! We checked out after one night - as did lots of other people. It's a shame as parts of the building are beautiful. They should re-name the hotel "The UnderGrand Hotel"

My mother and farther (75yrs) stayed for a 5 night break on the first evening after they had unpackked and went for dinner their LOCKED room was robbed and £400 pounds taken.
Other reports from other residents an 80yr old lady had her cases forced open when they were left in her room.
Manager helpful, but no police called!!!
We are following all this up no with the local police.
By the way rooms very poor and small.
Staff rude and unhelpful.

We arrived at the Grand Hotel just as it was getting dark, only to find there was nowhere to park as all the parking spaces outside the Hotel were full, so had to risk leaving the car in a loading bay while we took our luggage in and booked in, hoping no-one in the meantime would put a parking ticket on it.
Had to queue behind a few people at reception to book in only to be told by the time we got there that they had no reservation for us anywhere. After a while of the young man behind the desk trying unsuccesfully to track down what now seemed like our non existent reservation, we asked if they had 3 single rooms like we had already booked, we were told they had but would have to pay AGAIN so myself and my two friends all paid for another night and were given a key each for our rooms.
We accompanied one of our friends to her room first to see what her room was like only to be greeted by what can only be described as a cupboard with a single bed and bathroom. The bathroom door was open and there were towels all over the floor and no bulb or cover on the light fitting which we discovered was because this is where the water was running through the ceiling, hence the fact the towels were all over the floor, to soak up the water which was still dripping through the ceiling.
We then went to the other girls room only to find the same scenario but on top of the towels they had placed buckets to catch the water.
The other room was dry but small and claustraphobic as there was no window.
We went down to reception to get our money back and when we informed the young man on the reception what the problems was all we got was a "sorry we didnt know", which for a hotel that size you would think that someone would have informed a member of managment or staff that water was dripping through 2 floors of the hotel, and thats just the ones we knew about.
We were given our money back and left immediately after spending roughly an hour in there.
Our whole experience was very dissapointing and as managers for one of the worlds largest retail company's were totally disgusted with the way we were just dismissed as a problem and given a "sorry" by one of the colleagues and that was it.
If our company was run like this it would soon fold and with good reason.
It is safe to say that we will not be staying at this hotel ever, and by the number of people complaining while we were there am sure that there are a lot of people who feel the same.
Am sure I speak for myself and my friends when I say that the overall experience was horrendous and on a scale of 1 - 10 one being bad I would not even give this place a one, there were no positive experiences whatsoever.

Staff - unfriendly/unhelpful and disinterested
Ground floor dining area and seating lounge rooms off of foyer freezing cold........we were hovered round an electric heater!! Desperate or what!
Dinner buffet cold.....supposed to be carvery! Tasteless soup! Dodgy glass of white wine!
Luke warm coffee served....oh, sorry...self served from jugs....probably been there all day!
Please avoid this place....it may look appealing from the outside....but seriously there wasn't anything positive to say about this hotel.
We have stayed in Britannia hotels on numerous occasions, but this is the worst we have ever experienced!!
