Hackness Grange Hotel

The approach is great: a beautiful country house in an idyllic setting with rolling hills and a pretty lake. That is the last good impression one has. The inside is tired, dated, tatty and grubby. The decoration has not been updated for what looks like 40 years. We had what was descibed as a "Deluxe Room", I shudder to think what a Standard Room was like. I have just, along with 20 family members, returned from spending Christmas at this hotel, and would like to comment on what a pleasant stay we had. From the moment we arrived at the Hackness Grange the staff were attentive and welcoming in the extreme. This, coupled with the amazing location of the hotel in such peaceful surroundings, ensured that our stay was a true pleasure. Stayed for three nights in November 2006, This is a country House Hotel in a very pleasing location and has the potential to be very good, It's a hide-away place well in the country but within a 30 minute drive of Scarborough. The hotel itself is a faded bloom, perhaps it takes after its holding company, English Rose Hotels. The working staff were all quite pleasant but rather bemused, when I asked about the open fire I was told they didn't light it because too many guests wanted to sit round it! The place is a shambles, the staff do not seem to have had any training. Long waits for everything, wine brought, had to ask for glasses, £7.95 supplement for steak, robbery, not cooked as requested, served with a few chips and salad. Had to wait for tables to be cleared and reset both mornings, tea brought, had to ask for cups, side plates, no knives or serviettes. If you got kids like me you will end in a room well a cottage .off the hotel .they were short staffed and they charge £5 for my childs breakfast which was a hidden extra she not a big eater and wont eat much for a 2 year old ...bar not cheap they get you credit card deatails and you get a bar bill...at the end of your stay and it may be a big shock..........beware.. very quite though

The box of tissues in the bedroom is generally a good indicator of how well or badly a hotel is run. Unfortunately, ours had three tissues stuck in the top of an empty box - they were not replaced when used. Our room, in the courtyard had 1980's bedspread, curtains and wall-paper. All very faded and stained. The carpet was in a similar state. There was a thick layer of dust on everything that was slightly difficult to reach. The paintwork was peeling and an overall lack of maintenance was obvious. The TV did not have access to the channels... more
