Golden Tulip Aston Hotel Reviews

3 / 10
Jul 2006, Dr R Lightfoot

This "4* hotel" was anything but, it felt more like a down-market 3* hotel. Although situated between old Nice and the beach, the hotel's ideal location is the only positive thing to comment on. The room was in a poor condition with peeling paint, damaged carpet, leaking... more

Had a lovely time
I'm a bit surprised by the negative reviews about this hotel. I just came back from a really good holiday. The hotel was great! The location is perfect, near the old part of Nice, but also really close to the big shopping street and to the beach. The staff was very kind and helpfull and I had a really nice room. The swimmingpool on the top floor gives you a great view over Nice. Would love to go there again, I can really recommend this hotel!
NOT 4 STAR!
dont bother! not 4 star, rooms shabby and dull. additional charges for pool and parking very unfriendly and unhelpful staff will not be staying there again
Enjoyed my stay
The hotel is about three blocks back from the waterfront, a b lock from Old Town, and along a park where the tram is being updated. The Modern Art museum is about a ten minute walk up the park, and the convention center is another ten minutes up (do NOT believe them when they tell you the convensiton center is a ten minute walk: there is considerable construction and traffic lights between the two.) The hotel entrance is a bit obscured: just a single door along a busy row of storefronts. THe hotel is very nicely appointed, and the staff was friendly, helpful, and spoke excellent English. Checkin adn Check-out were efficiently handled, and there was a very good attached restaurant for lunch-dinner. The room was spacious and clean, very neat and new. The shower had good pressure and hot water. The TV remote is a bit finicky, and there are no English channels. The bed was comfortable; street noise (from the third floor facing the main streets and the park) was very acceptably soft. Good air conditioning, but I kept the window open all night. There are very thoughtful sunshades built in to help avoid the afternoon heat. The breakfast is in a special room on the first floor: it has a nice selection of fruit, breads, eggs and accompanyments, and juices. I thought this was a very nice, modern hotel with good food and comfortable rooms.
Do not go there
I booked a Deluxe room from the internet as I wanted a really nice room at a 4* hotel. We got a small and really old, broken and dirty room at the 6th floor. We changed a room the next day but first the reception staff showed us only rooms at the 6th floor. All the rooms were terrible. At the end we got a room at the 4th floor and the room was ok, at least a refurbished room. This is more a 2*hotel ! The hotel looks ok fromt the front and ther bar at the 7th floor is nice but expensive.
OK hotel
Just came back from our trip to France. We stayed 3 nights at the Grand Aston. Good location. Room was OK.Some holes in the curtains, some cracks in the bathroom sink. But we did not stay in the room that much anyway. (I would give it 3 star not 4 as they claim). Lots of renovations going on in the city. But it is lovely city anyway. We did not buy breakfast so I cannot comment on that. (Although 20 euro for the breakfast is too much). Big shock was 24 euro for the parking per day. It was just regular pay parking garage. So if you drive factor this in your daily rate. But I do not recommend having car in Nice anyway. You can walk or take a bus which is very cheap. For our trip to Monaco it cost 1.30 euro per person and took 40 min. Very comfortable ride and your do not worry about parking there. By the way, the bus stop is very close to the hotel.
Was good but only if you get a decent room
The Hotel looks fabulous from the outside and is a great location for the shops, the old town, the sea and various bars restaurants etc. The bar on the 7th floor is lovely and Fleur was really nice. However go for the house wine. A Gin & Tonic was 12 euros!!!! The bar was way more expensive then others locally. We stayed at the Aston for 3 nights, 20-23rd April. There were 7 in total in our party. My husband, me and our daughter had a family room booked, the others had 2 double rooms. The rooms: Hmmmm.... The first room (3rd floor) we stayed in was not 4-star at all. There were holes in the curtains, cracks in the tiles, mould on the ceiling, burns to the carpet. No hairdryer, coffee machine etc - not important to me but things I expect in a 4-star hotel. My father-in-law spoke to Reception and they agreed to move us the next day. So we didn't unpack and next day they moved our luggage and we came back to a room on the 4th floor. Blatantly a refurbished room and much much nicer. I think the rooms everyone moans about are the non-refurbished ones. I have no idea how much is already refurbished in the hotel and how many dodgy rooms are left - luck of the draw for which you get. However we found the staff incredibly helpful and if they can move you to another room they will. The view we had at the front of the building was lovely despite the unattractive tram works. The sun shone, the fountains bubbled and the half marathon runners went past almost making us miss our flight home! The buffet - quite a few comments on this by others already - if you get there any later than 8.30am and you will be left with crumbs and cornflakes. Every morning they ran out of tea-spoons, bowls and croissants. Ours was included in the room so it seemed reasonable value. Would definitely go to Nice again as it is a beautiful place, but would probably stay in a different hotel unless Aston could guarantee a refurbished room.
Aston is more like a 3* hotel
Spent 6 nights in Grand Hotel Aston with my husband and 3 children. Rooms were OK, but more like a 3* hotel than 4*. Breakfast a disaster..they ran out of cutlery and bread most of the time. For the rest the hotel is ok and the personnel were nice, except for those workning in breakfast restaurant.
weekend in nice at the grand aston
went to nice for a weekend,to see the sites and relax, got a 98 bus from the airport for 4euros straight to the hotel.grand by name grand by nature,it was nice and big clean and shiny to,wot can i say it was and is the same as the photos.good location, close to the sea, casino, market squareand if you fancy it to the castle hill(worth a walk to see the waterfall at the top).we was on level 6 so had great views of the alps, and if u get a superior room you get the fontains and sea.only things i would say is we wasnt allowed to the rooftop pool as it wasnt open even tho it was in season, and the rooms wasnt as grand as the hotel itself.old beds and carpets, with the bathroom needing an updated suite, but im just being picky, had a good time in a very lively place.staff was helpful and needed to be as my french aint to hot.go and enjoy nice wot are you waiting for.
Definitely NOT 4 star
Had a 4 night stay at the supposedly 4 star Grand Aston, Nice in April 2006.Booked on web.Check in was slow and unfriendly.Receptionist was on phone and continued to take calls while I waited. Room allocated to us on arrival was awful - tiny, dark with small window (2 star at best). Requested upgrade which cost us an extra 20 euros per night - it was better - larger, brighter with view of the square. We had expected to be able to use roof top sun terrace and pool(for our 8 year old) but this did not open until May - no mention of this on web.Buffet breakfast was included in our deal and there was a good selection of hot and cold food although they did tend to run out of clean cutlery and crockery at times and when it was busy they ran out of food aswell! On the morning of our departure we asked for a late checkout as our flight wasn't until 2130 - this was refused and we were asked to check out by 12 noon. They actually couldn't wait to get rid of us as housekeeping tried to get in to clean the room twice between 11 and 1130 and then at 1140 reception called to ask when we intended leaving ! The location of this hotel is excellent - very close to the old town and Nice centre but the accomodation and customer service was definitely not 4 star and when I return to Nice later in the year I will not be staying there.
great position
This was a good hotel in a prime location. We had a refurbished room although it was third time lucky as we didn't get the room we had booked first off. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and we had a pleasant weekend. The bar on the 7th floor had wonderful views. The hotel restaurant was OK if you are unable to get out for the evening and breakfast was just average. Overall a good choice and we would stay there again.
