Rather pricey
from ChrisAR
Stayed for 6 nights at the end of July 07. Found the hotel a bit pricey for the service offered. The room was large and comfortable but rather dark, and the view was of the bins! On arrival there was one bottle of water and one packet of (already broken) two biscuits, between two. Nothing appeared later in the week and we were told this was complimentary on arrival only. The first morning the water was cold because the boiler had gone out, so the shower was between cold and tepid. It took three days before we could turn the shower down from maximum heat. The shower was a fixed head shower but no shower cap was provided - just as well there wasn't much water pressure from it!! There was a hairdryer but the socket was not near a mirror (which was in the darkest part of the room). The standard bar menu food was adequate but nothing to write home about so we didn't bother with the main restaurant which appeared to be mostly the same food at a higher price. However we eventually discovered the specials (which are only advertised in the public bar, and the bar staff don't tell you about them unless you ask), which were generally pretty good. On the plus side we had no problems with noise (apart from the bin men one morning, and a very noisy sheep on another!). I didn't find the much talked about clock chime particularly intrusive. Breakfast was very good - especially the scrambled eggs. I would stay again if the price was right - but for the advertised prices I would expect a larger TV (with digital), WiFi, a better shower (without the mould on the ceiling), a better view and a couple of biscuits each day - none of which we got this time.
Very impressed

We were looking for a nice quiet place to stay after getting married in Scotland (yes just the two of us and 4 year old girl) No guests-the only way to do it! I have always loved Yorkshire as a county but never sampled the Dales. I am also sad enough to be a fan of that famous TV show, you know the one that has always had a miserable sergeant in it. So a quick trawl through 'tinternet' and this hotel kept coming up on searches. Some reviews were less than complimentary and this did cause some concern, however we decided to take a chance on those who thought it to be a good place to stay and we are glad we did. This is a lovely hotel set in the heart of the Dales. It has lots of character and has been recently refurbed to a hight standard, although I believe there may be a few rooms still to do. Our suite was fantastic. The staff were very helpful despite some reviews. The food in the bar was very nice and of the highest quality. We didn't sample the dining room as it was closed on night one, but enjoyed sitting in the small bar having our food. The real ale on offer was excellent. Like most hotels food and drink is amongst the upper tariff, but fair I thought for what was on offer. We stayed 3 nights on a 3 for 2 offer and over 3 nights worked out at £100 a night which I was happy with. I think 2 nights at £150 a night is a bit steep perhaps. There is a lovely walk down to see the 'spout' water fall and of course you might want to see the Aidensfield film set that is Goathland village, a small walk from the hotel. Get up early and go early eg 0900 or late in the day to avoid the hoards of coach parties. Avoid the Adensfield Arms pub as it is horrible and nothing like the warm welcome Oscar Blaketon might give you! Hang on a minute, he's miserable as well! It was the most unwelcoming pub I have been into for a long time. Overall I can recommend the Spout as a great Hotel and location for a quiet getaway. It aint cheap, but you do get what you pay for (golden rule of life) It is true about the church bells opposite chiming every 15 minutes, why?, I have no idea. If I lived next door I would be up that tower in the middle of the night with a sledgehammer!
as good as expected

The room was at the front, with a nice view of the church opposite. Not huge but adequate. The TV picture was a little fuzzy, but yo dont come for the TV viewing. The weather the previous day had been terrible so there was plenty of watre in the river, making the short walk down to the namesake waterfall a worthwhile experience. We had dinner from the ala carte menu. Its not cheap, but the presentation of the food was good, and the quality wa also high, with a few minor problems only. we had brie in a herb crust (which wasnt very herby) and scalls on a lemon risotto for starters. then for main courses, duck , which was decsribed on the menu as "pink" but certainly wasnt (we ordered it becaus it was described thus).. and lamb shank stuffed with black pudding, with rosemay and juniper bery sauce. the deserts, chocolate truffle tart with baileys anglaise, and a lemon and lime souffle (which was a touch heavy) Breakfast was very nice, but there was almost no fruit on the table when we arrived, and it wasnt replenished until aftre it was too late for us. Staff were all helpful attentive and pleasant. It was the first time I had seen this hotel wiyth a redudtion on laterooms at a time when I could book it, I am not surprised it is usually full, even though it is not cheap, the surroundings and the building make for a lovely weekend.

This hotel was fantastic, and was the best 3 star hotel I have ever stayed in. It should be rated as at least a 4 star. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious, we ate in the bar area but there is also an al a carte restaurant which looked very nice and not over priced. Breakfast was in the restaurant and this too was very tasty. The room was very impressive and comfortable and of a good size. The only problem being the shower and the bath which was very difficult to get in and out of, I cannot comment if all rooms are the same but I would not recommend our room (room number 19) to the elderly. The hotel has a good location within Goathland. Goathland is a very quiet area but it is just a short car journey to Whitby. We are looking forward to staying at the Mallyan Spout again.
Loved it!!

location, hotel, food, staff ALL EXCELLENT. i took my husband to the mallyan spout for his 40th birthday for 1 night stay and it was fantastic! when we arrived we had a drink in the bar and I asked when we checked in could we have a room with a view. we were given a free upgarde to one of the 2 suites they have. i think it was a quiet week and because it was a special occasion they gave us the upgrade, but would highly recommend paying the extra! (although the standard rooms were smaller they were still very well decorated and quaint). the room was huge with spectacular views over the moors and forest land. there was a huge window that you could lay in bed and enjoy the scenery from. not too mention a huge double bed! the bathroom was huge also with a seperate shower cubicle and even a t.v. the room was gorgeous with plenty of mahogany furniture, dressing table, small sofa and small table and chair, and chest of drawers , music system and large t.v. what more could you want! The village of Goathland is small with plenty of sheep, and afew other places to eat and drink. It was a 15 minute scenic drive to the coast of Whitby. we stayed in the hotel bar most of our evening, and enjoyed a 3 course meal. There is a seperate dining room if you wish to eat elsewhere. the hotel has about 4/5 snugg rooms on the ground floor which were again beautifully decorated. we had breakfast in bed (full english) the following morning brought to us by the wonderful staff. Both evening meal and breakfast were excellent, they even chilled a bottle of champagne I had brought with me for the breakfast equipped with 2 campagne flutes. overall i would recommend this hotel 100% and cant wait to go back!!
Very pleasant stay

We thoroughly enjoyed our three-night stay at the Mallyan Spout, which we booked through laterooms.com. Although it was early November, we were lucky to have bright sunshine and blue skies. Initial impressions were good, the lobby lounge had a blazing fire and our arrival was expected (not always the case!). We had opted for the "superior" room, which gave us a very comfortable, spacious and freshly decorated room with en suite. The only thing missing was a hairdryer. Two evenings we dined in the bar, the third in the formal dining room. The food was generally very good and breakfasts were generous. The village of Goathland is very pretty and there are some excellent walks around. We'd particularly recommend the walk down to the Mallyan Spout waterfall and along the river, but wear walking boots, not shoes as we did. It proved to be a very quiet and relaxing and relaxing experience. The staff were mostly very helpful and friendly. Unfortunately one particular member of staff clearly isn't cut out for the hospitality trade and hopefully will soon find a new vocation. Otherwise we were very happy with our stay and plan to visit again!
Could do better

We loved the location and our room had a wonderful view over the Esk valley. It encouraged us to learn that the hotel's new owners intend to restore it to its former glory and create a good country house hotel because it has tons of potential. The public areas certainly need some updating - the carpets in the reception area and restaurant scream at one! There was a very odd room at the entrance to the hotel which appeared to be an annex to the restaurant but was very bare and echo-y. The restaurant itself is very dull decor-wise and the standard caterers' banqueting chairs uncomfortable. The large bar (the smaller was closed during our visit) must be one of the most soul-less we have ever visited, decorated with clichéd prints by Sutcliffe, Constable et al, in cheap frames and hung seemingly at random. The seating is uncomfortable and most of the tables too narrow. Neither welcoming nor cosy. Fortunately the Birch Hall Inn at Beck Hole is only a few minutes drive away. We ate in the bar because the restaurant was so uninviting. The food was OK and copious but nothing special. The first night the chips (fries) were soggy and the second the duck was over-cooked. The salad came with no dressing and included unexpected (and unwelcome) ingredients such as raw pepers, olives and slices of unpeeled orange. Breakfast was included in our deal. No complaints about the cooked part but the buffet was unimaginative. I can hardly believe there is a hotel in the UK still serving tinned figs, tinned prunes and tinned grapefruit instead of fresh fruit! And measly wrapped portions of butter and cheap preserves. Proper cloth napkins would have been prefarable to the paper variety. There's a long way to go to recover the past glories, judging by the old menus framed on the walls! Our room was clean and the bed comfortable, although the pillows were like rocks. What was unacceptable was the bathroom - the lino was lifting off the floor, the lavatory seat, of the flimsiest plastic, didn't fit and the ancient shower produced a pathetic trickle. It all felt as if it has been installed in the 70s and not touched since. The soundproofing was so poor that no televisions should be allowed in the bedrooms. The sliding bathroom doors are very noisy and we could hear them, the plumbing and the various bathroom activities of our neighbours. Some of the staff were both friendly and helpful but there was a sizeable contingent of young staff members who would be better described as surly. As I said, this hotel has a huge potential and I hope they realise it but in the meantime we were more than a little disappointed. We had paid the same price for B&B in a central York hotel that same week and the general standard was so much higher.
Lovely athmosphere

My wife and I have just returned after spending christmas in the Mallyan Spout. This is the third time we have had the pleasure of staying here. Set in the beautiful village of Goathland I cant think of anywhere I would rather spend a few days. Our room had just been refurbished and was spotlessly clean, as was the bathroom. While in Goathland it snowed so bad that we couldn't leave the village for three days which meant that we had to spend a lot more than normal in the hotel. The staff were fantastic and really looked after us. We ate in the restaurant on the first night but actually prefered the menu in the bar with its roaring fire. The mulled wine was going down a treat with the guests. Perfect after a day in the snow. I cant recomend this hotel enough. Roll on next time.
Excellent personalised service

My family and I stayed at the Mallyan Spout for my Grandad's 80th Birthday party. The hotel went to a lot of effort to accomodate us, including opening the restaurant early for dinner and generally being very friendly and helpful. The majority of the hotel has been refurbished to a lovely standard, but two of our group's rooms obviously hadn't been updated yet as they were very dated and smelt of smoke terribly. In one room the toilet door wouldn't shut, never mind lock! It seamed a shame that most of our group enjoyed well presented rooms whereas others were left with stuffy old rooms. You really should get a discount for this. Apart from that everything was wonderful, the breakfast menu is fantastic, as was the food in the evening.

A quiet peaceful setting. No request is too much for the wonderful staff. Service and attention is excellent. Food is top notch just too much of it! The rooms are individually decorated and are all to an extremely high standard. You have the choice of dining in a superb... more
