Why not give the best rooms out first?
from WAFC1
Quite impressed by this hotel on arrival. Lovely old building with modern, refurbished public areas. Our problems started when we got to our room. The room itself (217) was spotlessly clean BUT the room slanted away at all angles, which meant the thick , 2 colour, striped wallpaper started as one colour at one end and ended up the other colour at the other end. The double room we had booked was a twin with the beds pushed together, the beds had seperate headboards, which stayed in the same place i.e where the beds should have been AND THE BEST BIT when you lied on the bed your feet were actually higher than your head!! The bathroom was tiny with a sliding door, inside the problems were:- a missing tile which hadn't been replaced, just filled with polyfilla, a square rust mark on the ceiling, where I presume an overhead water tank sat and when you sat on the toilet you nearly slid off!! To add to it all the room backs onto the raod where quite a few bars are, not the front where the gardens are. We really never complain but on this occasion we had to. I rang reception and asked if this was the best room they had as I felt like I was in the fun house. Within a minute she rang back to say there was another room available. The new room was on the 4th floor and was most acceptable. On the front, big bathroom and the bed was level! We moved our stuff and enjoyed the rest of our stay. The one thing I will say though, is that it's quite obvious the refurb of the bedrooms in 2004 was done on the cheap and even our second room was showing signs of wear. I reckon in just over 12mths time this site will start to fill with mostly negative reports based on that. Anyway to finish, we went down for breakfast just before 9 am, normally the busiest time for a full hotel, which it must have been for us to get our first bedroom, right? Wrong, we were the only people in there until they shut it down whist we were still there. Breakfast btw was lovely. If we'd have got our 2nd room 1st this review would have been 5/5. If we hadn't complained and been moved I'd be giving it 1/5. Therefore they get an in between 3/5. This review aims to make people aware of the different standard of rooms in this hotel not to put you off staying here.
Only OK
from Phil1982
This hotel is very old but has been done up to look as modern as possible inside. This gives it a strage apperance in certian areas. I went with a large party so got to see several rooms and they are all very different sizes!!!!! Nothing was really wrong with the hotel except the water system. When water goes down the sink/bath or you flush the Toilet an electronic pump kicks in - IT IS VERY LOUD! I was ok because I was up early every morning but if you wanted a late start you would hear the pumps in every room when people wash, shower or go to the Toilet. Very Strange. Breakfast and Dinner were both good anf the staff were very nice indeed. Locarion is right in the middle of Harrogate.
disapointing experience
from DSM8
We booked into Hotel with our 8 month old child. And on first impressions Hotel seemed very pleasant. The room had been refurbished but seemed to been done on a budget., the sink had a crack in it and generally the room felt a little shabby. Our main problem was that the room was very draughty, the sash windows however nice were simply not draught proof and resulted in a very uncomfortable night for all of us as the cot supplied meant our baby was to sleep 5 inches off the floor. We ended up cradling our baby in our arms all night whilst trying to block the draughts with bedding and towels. In the morning I complained about the room and were transfered to a smaller room which was a lot better. The food was in the restaurant was OK, and no better. However I must praise the waiter service in the restaurant they were very freindly and helpfull. The lift is very small and will just about fit one person and a pram crammed in. The Hotel is in a great location and the rooms we were in had lovely views. we will would stay in this hotel again

Stayed at the Swallow Yorkshire for the 16th Sept'06. It is in a great location next to the senetaf & across from Betty's Tea Rooms. The hotel is nice but I normally expect 4 star hotels to have 24 hour reception cover and a concierge to open doors/take baggage ect which this hotel lacked (might be that I have been a bit spoilt in the past?) The room we had - 213 was the best out of the ones our party had (there were 10 of us in 5 rooms). It had side views of the Senetaf but a nice large bathroom with black granite style tiled floor. My Sister-in-law in room 222 was facing the back of the hotel and was smaller and the other room I saw - 210 - had great views to the front of the hotel but again was still quite a bit smaller than ours. The rooms were looking a bit worn in places with a loose toilet role holder & small amount of paint peeling but were generaly very clean & tea & coffee facilities were handy. The lifts were tiny so if you can - take the stairs. The parking is very limited & you might have to wait a while to get a place unless you get there early. The bar in the evening appeared to be quite popular & had doors to the alley at the back where a Tapas bar is & several other pub/bars & seemed to be in a popular drinking location - about a 10 min walk from most clubs ect. Breakfast was good with fruits, cereals & hot breakfast. We got toast at the table and more brought over when asked. I enjoyed my overall stay & would stay here again, especially due to its position. Just be aware that as it isn't a 5 star so isn't perfect but still a nice hotel.
Better than expected having stayed in a number of other hotels in Harrogate

Stayed in Room 401. This was better than expected with nice decor and some nice welcoming touches (fresh fruit and chocolates). The staff were very friendly (if cheeky in a nice way). The breakfast was very good but juggling the hot tray lids was a bit of a science. The car parking was a little off-puttting if you arrive late - we had to park some 5 minutes away. The wifi is extortionate - fifteen quid a day !! The lifts are incredibly small and a little slow. The location is excellent and I would definitely stay here again.
Very Very Good

Booked a double room for £60 as a last minute break. Hotel was excellent. Staff were all very friendly and attentive. Room had everything that was needed. View was of the air conditioning units but was not bothered as for the price I was not expecting a spectacular view! I would not hesitate in recommending the hotel as it is centrally placed and well maintained. Harrogate is a lovely town to visit and I will recommend The Yorkshire to others.

Having looked for a last minute, it always seems to be last minute, need to be a bit more organised, good deal I searched the usual websites, then phoned the hotel direct and got a really good deal, a suite for almost the same price as a standard room. The suite Room 101... more
