Barely fit to stay in at present.
Desperately disappointed with our last stay at this hotel last weekend. The refurbished rooms may be good but the room we were offered was gloomy and shabby with a filthy window and carpet and a view of a whitewashed wall about 6 feet away. We asked for another and were offered a room over the entrance which was at least light. The window would not open - difficult on a humid night. The hotel appeared full of workmen. Although we were told that they wouldn't be working at the weekend, in fact the wall of the corridor above our room was... more
Harrogate's Jewel In The Crown
They say a week is a short time in politics - and so it can be said of The Crown Hotel. When I returned to my hometown of Harrogate and stayed in the hotel last year, its long-established stature among the gems of Harrogate's hotels was in danger of disappearing. Years of neglect and lack of investment had come home to roost, although staff worked hard in difficult circumstances to make my stay an enjoyable one. Twelve months on, I have returned to the hotel and am pleased to report that the huge programme of modernisation has transformed... more
Horrible
Just stayed at the Crown, first room was very damp, carpet was filthy, and was was coming away everywhere, there was evidence of damp everywhere. Lifts were not working, as the hotel is having major refurbishment, they failed to mention this when booking the room. When I got the duty manager up to expain the condition of the room he appologised and could offer no explination as to the condition of the room. I guess they take a chance that some people dont ever compalin and just make do?? Dont be fooled it looks great from the outside,... more
Hotel has character
I was very worried about staying at this hotel after reading such negative reviews. I agree it is in need of TLC and, from their brochure, is to undergo complete refurbishment. However, I thought it had lots of character and my room was the largest I have ever stayed in with a huge window overlooking the front of the hotel. The furnishings were long past their best but the linen was clean and the staff I encountered were friendly. It is in an excellent location and I think people should not be put off staying there. It was good value for... more
Give it a try
Give the hotel a try. It is under new ownership and they have plans. The location couldn't be better. The staff are very friendly and the food in the restaurant is much improved on my last stay.
Worst Hotel Ever
This has got to be the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The fact that it needs doing up is a understatement, the whole of the inside needs stripping out and restarting. It was so noisy at night-time, I did not get much sleep, you could even hear people walking around. If you are thinking about staying here, don't. I have stayed at better hotels in Harrogate, but stayed here for a change and regretted it
A huge disappointment
My wife and I stayed in The Crown during a weekend trip to Harrogate. The only good thing about the hotel is it's location. Everything else is terrible: Poor standard or decor - very tired looking throughout. Our room overlooked a 'courtyard' in the centre of the building which was not very pleasant. The bed was very uncomfortable - my wife described it as a sack of springs. The sheets were tatty although clean. Evening meal was so bland we didn't eat anything on the second night other than a piece of melon - got to... more
Very Welcoming
My husband and I spent the weekend 25-27 November at the Crown. Yes, the hotel is old, and the floorboards in the bedroom squeak, but the staff were friendly and the hotel was warm and clean. The food was nice with a choice of starter, main course and sweet, plus vegetarian options. The hotel is very handy for the shops and getting out and about, plus it has it's own off the road car park. The only complaint was that the lift was not working all weekend. Would we stay there again - Yes.
In a great location, but in need of a little love
The Crown is right in the heart of beautiful Harrogate, so the location couldn't be better. Car parking on-site is limited, but there is plenty of on-street parking in the area. As an 18th century coaching inn, it certainly has character, but years of under-investment are all too obvious with tired decorations, slightly shabby furniture and general wear and tear in abundance. The bathroom was particularly dated. There was no particularly nice lounge area - the main public area seemed to be a small bar with rather spartan furniture and... more
