West End Hotel Reviews

8 / 10
Feb 2007, Mr S Stannett

We drove 15 hours from London to get here and what awaiting us was gorgeous. We paid a little extra for a sea view balcony and it was well worth it... Hotel very clean and breakfast gorgeous, in the lovely front conservatory/garden. Just across the road from the beach also!... more

Expecting Friendly Service From A Best Western?
We stayed at the West End for 3nights last July 2005 as part of an extended trip in Europe. We booked the West End because it is listed as being a Best Western property, assuming that the staff would be as friendly and cooperative as you find in another Best Western throughout Europe or the States. We also liked very much the location on the Promenade des Anglais and it proximity to the old town. The service left very much to be desired. The staff were quite the snobs, as if the guests were not good enough, and English seemed foreign. The room was dark as it faced the back or side of the hotel, but it was decent and the bathroom was very nice. The furnishings are outdated, and presumed that the room had not been refurbished since the early 80's. The breakfast was very minimal as if they were still on World War II rations. What is the matter with this picture....hmmmm....supposedly a 4* hotel, serving a 1* breakfast!!!!! Location is fantastic, but we have agreed that next time we will take a less expensive hotel closer to the old town, where even the people seemed really down to earth. Everything and everyone along the Promenade is Snob city....save yourself and get something closer to the old town and don't waste your money on seaview, you won't be staying in your room all day or all night.
Enjoyable stay but not without a few niggles
Just back from Nice to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Had a great time overall but there were a few negatives. I had emailed ahead to request a high up floor with a sea view which the hotel obliged me with, 5th floor and full view which was really superb. I would not like to have been on a lower floor as the noise from traffic went on all night. The breakfast was really good and we were able to eat on the terrace which was lovely. I'm afraid what really dampened my enthusiasm for the hotel was having a meal in their Le Seicle restaurant, the food was just ok but the service was probably the worst I have ever had. Before I left i had gone to see the conceirge for directions to Monaco by car on the Grand corniche but was told he was off for 2 days ,I asked if anyone else could help and was told someone would come back to me , I'm still waiting. Overall , I was not really disappointed with the hotel as the view made up for alot but would probably try somewhere else next time
Great Location!!!
My wife and I stayed at this hotel at the end of May 06. We thought the location was excellent. It was directly across from Blue Beach and the views were amazing. The staff was very curtious and helpful with our search for local site seeing. The rooms were just a little small and there wasn't a shower curtain around the tub but there was a shower spout. I figure I would just adapt, knowing that this isn't the U.S., unlike some of the people that review these hotels. Other than that, which I dont see as a problem, everything exceeded expectations. There is a great restaurant attached to the hotel and the food was good/very good depending on which dishes you ordered. I would definitely stay at this hotel again and it exceeded all of our expectations.
Great Hotel
My husband and I arrived for a three night stay at the Hotel West End with the hope that we would be happy with our choice but also with a slight worry at the back of our minds (due to reading the more negative reviews on this website) that we might have made a mistake. Our fears quickly vanished upon our arrival. The hotel has a beautiful facade (one of the prettiest on the Promenade in our opinion) with immaculate planting, seating and dining areas to welcome you. Stepping out of the taxi, our initial feelings were "Oooh, this is much nicer than we were expecting". So far so good! The staff on reception were delightful (as were all members of staff that we encountered) and we were able to check in to our room almost three hours before the official check-in time! Our attempts to use the little French that we know seemed to be appreciated and for our entire stay we could not walk past a member of staff without them greeting you cheefully with a "Bonjour" and a smile. We had booked in to a Superior double room which happened to have a view of the sea and the gardens in the neighbouring museum. The view was beautiful and we spent time every evening just watching the world go by and the sun go down with a relaxing drink. Our room was not huge but there was certainly enough space for a good size double bed, a dressing table and chair and another table with chairs. The bathroom was immaculate and hot water was always available. The room was kept pristine by the room maid who made several calls through out the day to check our towels and supplies of toiletries. We can't comment on the food in the hotel as breakfast was not included in our price and we dined out every evening. However, the breakfast terrace and the dining room was always beautifully presented. We would say that this hotel is worthy of it's 4 star rating and would recommend it. The only word of warning we would give is to try to avoid a room with a view from the back of the hotel. Using the stairs rather than the lift we noticed the view from the back and it is not very pretty. Unfortunately, everyone will request the rooms with the sea views so someone will always end up at the back. But this would have to be the only negative thing about the hotel.
Superior Vista from "Superior Sea View" Room
What a view! We had booked a room with a "superior sea view" and we weren't disappointed. The hotel is located along the Promenade des Anglais and strategically well situated in relation to the Promenade, the City Centre, central bus station (approx.10 minute walk) and central railway station (approx. 25 minute walk). The twin room, with balcony, on the 3rd floor overlooked the bay and the view was stunning. The room was comfortable although the furniture had seen better times, was somewhat "tacky" and badly in need of a refurbish. We opted out of the hotel breakfast which at €20.00 per head was expensive. We found a delighful patisserie around the corner from the hotel and obtained a most adequate breakfast for significantly less than that being charged at the hotel. Staff at the hotel were courteous and helpful. Some elements which caused annoyance were having to ask for the complimentary shampoo to be replenished on a daily basis and likewise for fresh towels. The Promenade which runs directly outside of the hotel is busy virtually all of the time resulting in a noise level outside of the room which is constantly high. This meant that significant levels of noise had to be endured if one wanted the window open. There was a control panel for air conditioning wall-mounted in the room but it wasn't functional and judging by it's condition I doubt if it had worked in the recent past. In terms of value for money (€`125.00 per night) the hotel is just about "acceptable". The view is fantastic but the jury is still out for me in terms of whether the superior view is adequate compensation for the shortcomings of the hotel.
dissapointed with the West End
My wife and I stayed in the West End as a party of four couples. The location of the hotel is excellent but the 'standard' rooms we booked via the internet were VERY disappointing. To say they were small would be an under-statement, they were also in need of refurbishment. One couple asked to be moved to another slightly bigger room, however this proved no better as there was no hot water available for a shower or bath.We eventually agreed to pay for an up-grade with a sea view. This was an improvement but again the room had seen better days and needed attention. In neither the 'standard' or the up-graded room were there any tea or coffee making facilities something you expect in most hotels. The Buffet Breakfast was of limited choice,a fried egg costing extra! There was also a limited number of tables available to meet demand. In our view this is not a four star hotel, better value can be found elsewhere.
Excellent Hotel
Based my choice of this Hotel from previous reviews on this site. We caught a 4 euro bus ride from the airport which drops you off just accross the road from the hotel. (the return bus stop is outside the hotel) On arrival the hotel frontage is very impressive. The reception were very helpful when they could not find a non smoking room as we had requested. I was offered a change of room if I was not happy with the one allocated. He then gave us a map and indicated some places of interest. Reception 10/10. The room was OK but I requested a change and got a more airy room. (I think hotels should allocate more non smoking rooms). The rooms were modern, not very big, clean but the first room we looked at, as others have mentioned, had no shower curtain (very strange). I got a good rate off the internet which included a good hot breafast buffet. The hotel is about 10-15 mins walk to the old town, and a similar ditance to the railway station from where you can visit numerous places along the coast.
Great Hotel
I must say I was really happy with this hotel. Most of the reviews that are on this site were excellent only one or two were unhappy with some aspect of the service. When I checked in on Thur. Feb. 16th they put me in a room on the 6th floor, it was a very pleasant room but not what I had booked. My friend was coming in on Saturday so I told them to please change the room by then, which they were more than happy to do. The staff at the desk could not have been more helpful if they tried. The room I moved to was larger and on the 5th floor so the view was still amazing. The entire hotel was kept very clean, it was very tastefully decorated and they had lovely antiques everywhere. The hotel is in a great location near old town and the flower market, everything was within walking distance. We were there during carnavale so there was a great deal to do. All in all a lovely experience for my first time in that part of Europe. Would definately recommend this hotel to anyone going to the Riveria.
Good Location & Great View
Booked this hotel based on comments here- all were true! I had a triple for $250 US from expedia. It was a deluxe ocean view. Two twin beds and a day bed. The balcony looked right to the sea which was beautiful. I actually paid a supplement (I thik kke $60US) because my daughter was 13 not 12 and that was foolish- no one cared. Based on the advice here we skipped the 20E brakfast since it was not included in the room rate and walked down the steet to the most amazing bakery and had a terrific breakfast for 3 for under 10euro. I can still smell the fresh baked goods. There was ample storage space and the whole no curtain thing in the bathroom is bizare! The room was very clean the the staff quite helpful. Based on location alone- it was well worth it!
Nice but not so "Nice"
Perfect location, good standard. But where did the French charm go?
