Dei Cavalieri Hotel

I went to the hotel cavalieri on my honeymoon and chose it mostly after reviewing some of the very positive reviews from this site. To say the least it was a let down. The staff was somewhat friendly but not overly helpful. We were told we would have a room with a view but instead had a room with a view of a wall. It was dark and dreary, for some reason they never turned on the lights in the hallways or reception area. Their restaurant that they speak so highly of apparently doesn't exist. We stayed two nights at the Dei Cavalieri during our two week holiday in Italy. Compared to most European hotels, the Cavalieri fares quite well. Our room was done tastefully in ceramic tile with a fantastic view of the sea from our balcony. However, some of the balconies are quite small (as our's was) so ask in advance to make sure you get a larger one if possible. Otherwise, it's very, very, very, cramped. We stayed in Hotel Dei Cavalieri a couple of years ago and were unsure of what to expect before arrival. We researched its location and were aware that it was out of town and on the road. The walk into town was not too long, although slightly uphill on the way back. It is possible to get the bus from the centre of town to almost to the hotel door. Stayed in mid-June 2004. The hotel is on the road from Amalfi to Positano and is a 20 minute walk uphill from the centre of Amalfi. If you arrive by bus or boat and ring them they send a car for you. We had a superior room with sea view and huge balcony on the sixth floor. Room adequate, bathroom small, bed comfy, aircon pretty ineffectual, fridge worked, view smashing. Clean. Breakfast best seen in Italy. Bathing place is down about 1000 steps and vertical. Small beach up the road, charges money, also down steps. OK but you have to come up... more

... I'd hate to see what a standard room was like! The room was sizeable enough but it was stuffy and at the side of the building - so we had a spendid view of ... a concrete wall! As previous reviews have stated - the breakfast was above standard - lots of choice. Didn't use the restaurant though. The staff were helpful and the place was clean enough. We were there over the Easter break - definately a busy time, yet the terrace hadn't been set out for "lounging" in. Their "garden" doesn't really feel welcoming either... more

We had the most wonderful week in the 4 BR/4BA villa on the hotel property. The bedrooms had individually controlled air conditioners which worked very well. Three second floor BRs had exquisite views each from its private balcony. We ate most dinners in Amalfi, but enjoyed the kitchen in the villa for cappucino & cornettis we purchased in town. The villa is private and perfect for a group. There is nothing like reaching up a pulling a bunch of grapes from the arbor overhead as a snack. We really liked the people and the unusual decor in this hotel. The breakfasts were the most varied and interesting we have ever had! but we ate dinner there on ur first night as it was bucketing down with rain - and the food at night was truly dire. We never ate there again! A good twenty minutes up a long hill from the town. Our room was at the back of the hotel, right against the cliff. The hotel decor was a little old fashioned, but the room was spotless, towels changed every day and bedding every other day. Contrary to previous report, our bed was the best I have ever had on holiday, huge and comfortable. Didn't eat evening meals in the hotel as dined out every night, but breakfast was excellent, food topped up regularly and plenty of choice. Hotel dei cavalieri costs 150 euros a night for a room with balcony. The views were stuning but... The air conditioning was useless and when we asked for it to be repaired we got no where. In mid August heat this was a night mare and the system was just an old box in a corner of the room completely insufficient. The hotel is at least a 20 minute walk into amalfi and is all up hill when coming back from the town- this walk is only for the young and energetic. The staff there was very friendly and so eager to please....even when I woke up my first day barely able to move because of my broken old horse of a mattress which should have been put out to pasture about a decade ago. They offered to put wood beneath it to help the support, but the only wood that would of helped that mattress would be a coffin for when you buried it! Yet my private balcony which overlooked the Meditaranean see was fabulous and made the stay NOT a wash. Should they finally get new matresses, I would gladly stay there... more
