Stella Maris

We had a wonderful time at this hotel and cannot understand the few negative comments that it has attracted. After 18 months in planning this was the perfect escape after our Big Day. The room was wonderful with a beautiful sea view, and the grounds were lovely. Plenty of wildlife to observe. Lizards and snakes (there are NO poisnous snakes on Sardinia). Beautiful location and hotel, but not the best value for money. For instance: we didn't receive the 2 bathrobes or slippers as indicated on our reservation, the room only had one electrical plug which was used for the TV (none of the foreign channels were working) so it was difficult to use hairdryers, load mobiles etc at the same time, the mini-bar was vastly overpriced (4 Euros for a glass of Coke!!) and very poorly equipped with no snacks and no glasses (only 2 plastic cups from the bathroom), the swimming pool was out of order and the... more

Knowing nothing about Sardinia we chose the Stella Maris from the internet and booked through Sardatur. We chose a sea facing room, premium economy with BMI and a transfer to the Hotel by private car. We stayed for one week and would certainly go again. Premium economy was not that much more expensive but gave us a dedicated check in desk, a free meal and drinks and use of the airport lounges. The service was excellent. The Stella Maris undoubtedly has a lovely location and is certainly tranquil - the beautiful gardens slope down to the private beach and with only around 50 rooms it has the feel of a large villa rather than a hotel. However there is the danger that you can feel very clastrophobic - it is very traditional in the sense that you have to have breakfast and dinner at a certain time, and sit at a certain table etc and I found this inflexiblity rather frustrating - it felt a little like staying in a 1950's time warp.

A very nice and well appointed hotel, and right on the beach! My wife and stayed in one of the 4 'Junior Suites' during August - unfortunately our suite didn't have a sea-view (take care if booking a suite), but it had direct access to the hotel's outdoor pool, which was of good size and very clean. We stayed in this hotel during our honeymoon and frankly it was a disgrace. The hotel has a four star rating but this is laughable (even taking into account the difference between UK and European ratings). Subjectively, the decor is poor, the reception is dingy, the furniture is cheap and the rooms appear not to have been updated since it was built in the mid 1990s. Objectively the rooms have no baths (certainly a pre-requisite of 4 star accommodation in the UK), the shower in the room we had flooded the entire bedroom every time... more

I was twice in this hotel; the first time in 2004 was a memorable experience; the second was very nice, but I had a smaller room and the sea view, though beautiful, wasn't as open as the one I had the year before. No matter. Simple Mediterranean rooms, rather well equipped (but why the tvset next to the ceiling?); nice atmosphere, very nice building, more than clean. Hotel Stella Maris is the perfect hideaway if you're looking for a secluded getaway on the ocean. We stayed for a long weekend and will definitely go back again. The hotel sits by itself on a nice stretch of sandy beach leading out to clear, blue-green water which is part of a protected marine area. To the west is a scenic, arid hillside that separates Villasimius (the nearby town) from the more populated areas closer to Cagliari. A lovely hotel with very attentive staff. Wonderful grounds and a superb beach...couldn't be better! I suggest going in early summer before the Italians are on holiday as having experienced the hotel at different times of year I felt it was rather over crowded on the beach during high summer (although you do have your own private bit of beach). Calla Caterina down the road is also a good one to check out, both very relaxing and very well kept. Will go again to both.

Fantastic location - right on the beach (this is because it was built over 30 years ago when this was allowed). Recently refurbished though - very nice. Beach is public but only really crowded at week-ends and in August. A little isolated but great for a relaxing holiday - food was truly first-class. Good for families too with a nice pool and a garden. We will definitely return ! Hotel can arrange taxi transport from Cagliari airport (about 60 mins).
