Balanced Review
OK, I have read the reviews already posted - and will attempt to give an honest account of my stay here. It may be helpful to others if I did two lists - Bad points and Good points. First, the Bad points : 1. The distance to the centre of York has been mentioned in other reviews. Well, I speak as someone who walks alot - and to be fair, it IS quite a distance to the centre. Do not let others kid you out of this. I walk briskly, yet still took me the best part of 30 minutes - so I figured it must be a good 2 miles. And the... more
Amazing Birthday Celebration
What an amazing birthday.... My other half booked us both into Middlehtorpe Hall & Spa for an overnight stay .We arrived mid-afternoon on the Sunday to be greeted by a very friendly porter who collected our lugggage and even parked the car for us. We were shown to a beautifuly decorated and furnished double room in the courtyard which over looked the magnificent gardens (they have acres and acres). Hubby had arranged for a bottle of bubbly to be in the room on arrival and there it was chilling nicely with a hand written card from the... more
Wonderful weekend
We had the most wonderful stay at Middlethorpe Hall this weekend. My husband took me for our anniversary and, having never been to York, I enjoyed the whole experience immensely. For those of us who like to dress for dinner and salivate over foods that we would not normally eat, it is heaven. We also took a little time to treat ourselves to the Swedish massage which was fabulous. All in all it was a fantastic weekend, and I really would recommend it to anyone looking to relax and pamper themselves.
snooty and pretentious
This so called luxury hotel left a nasty taste in my mouth. Unfortunately, they seem unable to tell the difference between "luxury" and downright pompous. My bedroom (in the main house) was fairly comfy but tiny with a minuscule, run down bathroom that needed updating. Food was ok but expensive for what it was. I certainly won't be going back.
Embarrassing Country House Hotel
After a night's stay at Middlethorpe Hall I felt embarrassed to be British. It is the sort of ossified edifice that might impress a few foreign tourists who think the British are quaint, order food from a "Bill of Fare" and relish cramped bathrooms with rust and chipped enamel, and feel that paying $500 a night is part of the experience. Well, it isn't. This hotel is just downright bad. We had cottage suite No.33, up the little lane. It had a double and a single bedroom, a sitting room, kitchenette, bathroom. It was impractical and... more
Management response from Middlethorpe

Hoteliers should always be modest enough to learn from, rather than resent, complaints: We are! Even when faced with such a vituperative, even vindictive barrage like this! To reply: Firstly, all three of Historic House Hotels are traditionally furnished and run establishments, where a lot of our guests also enjoy National Trust standards. They are not minimalist in the sense that some new modern hotels are, and we have noticed the phenomenon of some guests who like the modern resenting the traditional and antique. Nonetheless, there are areas which must be functional and up to contemporary expectations, and these must include bathrooms, where we have a long-planned programme of improvement during 2007 throughout our three properties, where necessary. This guest was we believe trying to find faults in several respects. We care deeply about our guests, their comfort and enjoyment of their stay. Mr Chatard, the General Manager wanted to deal with this guest quickly, before the very prominent way he was complaining, audibly disturbed too many other guests. On the basis that the guest did not enjoy his visit he was given a discount; despite having made his point he has written as he has. Finally, we should mention that the AA increased the rating of Middlethorpe Hall & Spa from three red stars to four red stars in October 2006.

Great place!
It felt like staying in a National Trust property rather than a hotel. Every room is so nicely decorated too. The staff is very nice and the food was really excellent. We could go on and on about Middlethorpe (clean spa, nice park, comfortable bedrooms etc...), it is a really nice place to spend a short break. It's as marvellous as its sister hotel Bodysgallen Hall in Wales. Be sure to ask for a room in the main house with view on the garden side and its magnificent trees. The only thing, and it has nothing to do with the hotel... more
Quiet efficiency, nice hotel
We stayed here basically as a stop-over whilst popping into York, not for a break in itself, and found the hotel fine. The staff stood out as being very obliging and helpful without being intrusive. We had the basic room in the courtyard annexe, which is small but clean, and quiet. Actually be aware that the main house is near to a busy road, you are probably better off in the courtyard. Gardens were beautiful, public areas were top-notch and the sandwiches and breakfast we had there were very nice indeed. The taxi ride into York... more
Magic Hotel fantastic setting
Fantastic Hotel located a couple of miles outside york Stately home with lovely gardens where drinks etc can be taken outside. We asked for a room in the courtyard which is wonderfull (ask for upstairs in the courtyard). Pool and spa is intimate and set away (few strides) and is quiet and relaxed with Jacuzzi and Sauna. Not massive but sweetly housed in cottage, massage treatments upstairs. Breakfast was okay slightly formal and stuffy, Room service was excellent and quick and we even had a couple of drink brought to us... more
What a let down!
Our stay at Middlethorpe Hall was one big disappointment, we had looked forward to a weekend at a spa hotel, but all the spa treatments were fully booked days before we arrived. Our room was in a cottage 75 yards from the main building, it was tired and dingy, a bit like staying with an impoverished grandparent. The bathroom was the biggest let down of all with a fixed shower screen that meant you almost had to climb into the bath to reach the taps made you question the sanity of the bathroom designer. The dinner was bland and... more
Extremely disappointed!
Booked this hotel as we had searched for a really special hotel that offered luxury and comfort. The Hotel itself is very grand and the staff on reception were excellent. However, we booked a luxury room in the house itself. The room was not what i would class as luxury. The decor was very faded and although the bed was extremely comfortable, there was nothing in the room that made is a luxury room. There were no tea/coffee making facilities and the bathroom was small and musty. The Spa area was very small and no treatments were... more
