Mercure Notre Dame Hotel Reviews
Aug 2003, shazbaz
Having visited the South of France several years ago we loved it so much that we decided to go back again this year. We stayed in Nice this time (last time in Cannes) and were very happy with our choice of hotel, which was very central, and only 5 minutes walk from the... more

Not a four star hotel
from A TripAdvisor Member
I spent seven days at this hotel and I feel it should be rated at most a three star hotel, as I have been to better two star hotels. The staff were polite and helpfull but this is the only thing I can say that is good. I had to move rooms three times due to bad air conditioning. The carpets were very dirty. The breakfast was a joke in comparison to other four star hotels I have frequented. Be warned, there is a reason for the lower prices of this hotel. I agree with the other comments on the gardens and the tram construction. The garden is non-existent at this time. The rooms are very cheaply furnished. The in-room fridge in two of the three rooms I had failed to keep the contents cool. I would definitely not go back.
Central Location - beware building works
from 712Medic
Stayed for 12 days at start of July 2005. Interested in review dated 17 Feb stating work on gardens was in progress - it is still in progress and out of bounds - no large plants or shady areas so terrace is overlooked by offices and apartments - no mention of this on hotel's website!! There are considerable roadworks on the main street outside the hotel ( tramway) and pedestrian access is a crush at times. Also the building next to the hotel is being renovated so the street is full of skips & rubbish. Breakfast room & food fine, staff helpful (in a Gallic way) central location but still 25 minutes walk to Promenade but only 5 to Station. Pool was closed for 5 days during our stay, a/c could not keep our room below 25 degrees. In my opinion not worthy of a 4 star rating in comparison with others in the city. Avoid until constructions are over in 2007. Not the restful break we hoped for.
Excellent

Just back after spending 5 nights in this hotel. Excellent location - 5 mins walk from train station (number 99 bus brings you direct from airport in 15 mins for €4) Highly efficient and very friendly staff. Rooms fine - air conditioning may be a problem during the very hot summer months however as it could have been cooler fopr us in May!. A few minutes walk from all major attractions. Excellent restaurants within 5 mins walk - great Japanese/Chinese called Hot Pot and lovely little French/Italian called La Toscan. Very reasonable. Will definately be returning to this hotel - pool on the roof is added bonus!
hotel builing works feb 05 avoid at present

We stayed at the mercure on 06 feb 05 for 3 nights. staff very polite, however room was very cold as the heating was not working. we were offered another room which was also cold. Building works at hotel woke us at 6.00am every morning (not so restful) also there are major road works outside the hotel which are ongoing for the next 2 years (new tram system) probably best to stay at another hotel over the next 2 years
excellent value for money
from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed for 3 very enjoyable nights in February. The double room was spacious and very clean. Work is going on in the garden in preparation for peak season, so not much of a view. The staff were very helpful and effecient and the hotel was central. At this time of the year perhaps it would have been better to stay nearer the beach as some bars and restaurants are closed and there are quite alot of roadworks near the hotel. Overall the hotel was very good value for money and we would recommend it.
Great location

Super hotel in ideal location. We stayed for 3 nights with our 2 year old son. Rooms were spacious and clean if a little dated in decor. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good. Swimming pool was closed at time of our stay (January). Location approx. 5 minutes from railway station, (direct shuttle bus #99 from airport will drop you at station for 4euro's per person - very good value), approx 10min walk from old town and promenade. Would certainly stay again.

Room allocated on 5th floor at end.No table and chairs like other rooms on same floor.Rather cramped for two people.
great value, well run, friendly and helpful

the mercure is great value for a short break. the hotel is very clean and well run with very friendly and efficient staff. the amenaties for a city centre hotel are excellent, with a pool and sauna on the roof and quite a large garden terrace on the first floor. the breakfasts are very comprehensive with great and unobtrusive service. standard rooms are clean and comfortable well appointed, without being luxurious, good chambermaids. extra bonus, tea and coffee making equipment in room. good position in city centre, quiet at rear. would definately return.
Quiet Oasis in Nice
from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed 6 nights at the Mercure Notre Dame hotel in Nice in September 2002. After researching hotels on the internet, we settled on Mercure Notre Dame based on description, price and location. We were unfamiliar with the Mercure chain (part of the Accor group), but the Mercure hotels appear to cover a wide range of lodging from 2 to 4 stars. The Notre Dame is considered by Mercure as a 4 star - European rating appears to be more generous than North American. We would agree, 4 stars seems reasonable. This was a good hotel for North American tourists. It appeared to be popular with higher-end bus tour groups and airline staff. We made reservations through the Accor website. The price of 145 Euros per night for a "delux" room seemed reasonable. We asked for a non-smoking room but when we arrived were given a smoking room. It was unacceptable - it reeked of smoke when we opened the door - we didn't need to go in. The front desk was helpful, putting us into non-smoking "classic" room at 131 Euro per night saying there were no "delux" non-smoking rooms available. From our brief look into the delux room, there didn't appear to be any difference in size. The room size was very acceptable, larger than we had expected. Very clean and functional. The hotel appeared to have been purpose-built in the 1970's and had undergone recent refurbishing / renovations. The room was on the 5th floor at the back of the building, overlooking their courtyard. Our room was very quiet - a real oasis of tranquility. The rooms at the front of the hotel might be noisy, given the hotel's proximity to Avenue Jean Medecin, a main thoroughfare. Breakfast was supposedly included in my booking, although I had to get that sorted out when I checked out - again the front desk staff was very helpful. The breakfasts are mediocre, a far cry from what we had at the Holiday Inn Paris Opera, and definitely not worth the published rate of 14 Euros per person. Don't pay extra for breakf ay. The hotel represents good value. Although it's not in the heart of the tourist hotel area, it is reasonably convenient for walking to the beach, the market, the train station and tourist sights. The staff was courteous, cheerful and helpful, with English spoken by all we encountered. Would we stay there again? Absolutely. See our other reviews of the Holiday Inn Paris Opera (Paris) and Kensington Country Inn & suites (London).

The journey from the airport is simple a short bus ride takes you to the train station, from here it is just a few minutes walk, but beware there are substantial road work though throughout the centre, which can make crossing the roads somewhat more than a little daunting!... more
