Having visited the South of France several years ago we loved it so much that we decided to go back again this year. We stayed in Nice this time (last time in Cannes) and were very happy with our choice of hotel, which was very central, and only 5 minutes walk from the train station. As we didn’t rent a car this time having the railway station so near was ideal as we were able to take many day trips easily. We visited Cannes, Monaco, Antibes, and Juan Le Pins and ventured for the first time into Ventemille (Italy), which was a new experience for us! We went on a Friday as we had heard a lot about the fabulous open markets there and it was certainly an eye opener! Everything and anything available at very cheap prices. Certainly worth a visit!
We found many reasonably priced restaurants near to our hotel, which we enjoyed and having a large Monoprix supermarket 2 mins away was handy for stocking up on drinks and snacks.
The hotel we stayed in, Mercure Notre Dame, was very comfortable and I would definitely stay there again. The rooms were spacious and modern and there is a rooftop swimming pool, which was a bit different but nevertheless, enjoyable. The only disadvantage perhaps of the location of the hotel was that it was a good 20 minutes walk down to the beach.
Our holiday lasted 10 days which is probably ample enough time to see and do everything you would want in the area.

The journey from the airport is simple a short bus ride takes you to the train station, from here it is just a few minutes walk, but beware there are substantial road work though throughout the centre, which can make crossing the roads somewhat more than a little daunting!
In the hotel itself the reception area is clean and welcoming and the staff are helpful and friendly, and generally all speak English far better than our French! We were on the fourth floor facing the road, which was very noisy at night. The room itself was a good size although was desperately in need of redecoration. The major complaint about the room other than the noise, was despite the fact that it was generally fairly clean, on the fist night we discovered shards of broken glass on the bed! When we complained about this nothing was done a cleaner was sent in the morning with no apologies what so ever!
Poor choice of breakfasts, most of which looked as if it had been out all night especially the milk, basically filled up on toast and juice.
Despite the noise of the central location make the most of the train station and make sure you visit Monoco and Cannes for around 10-15 euros. For a base to visit the surrounding are the hotel is OK. It's definitely not worth the 4stars it claims to have, which incidentally we paid the price for and therefore were expecting. Would not go back.
